ooc ; one thing I really like about Bazz and Jugram’s arc is the showing of how painful a friendship break up can be, oftentimes stinging more than a romantic break up.
Something that is very seldom explored in fiction.
Or even talked about in general as we, as society, still tend to place romantic relationship above every other kind of bond (be it friendship or community) and everything else.
ooc; this is really giving tarot sword cards vibes.
tbh jugram had always reminded me of the moon card in the major arcanes of marseille tarot, especially after his zodiac was revealed. the justice also fits him.
now you can't change my mind that his design wasn't inspired by it.

ooc ; everyone talks about Yhwach recruiting Jugram when he was a young, fragile boy, but no one talks about As Nodt being recruited while being on his death bed in a hospital.
Thus, being in a vulnerable position himself, unlikely incapacited to think properly and make an informed choice.
Then became a ruthless menace in the army, when he was hinted at being a genuine, good person in his previous life.
Askin also mentioned being recruited because he couldn’t die and described it as a pretty pathetic thing to be recruited for, that people used to always underestimate and how it used to bother him.
Which, in my humble opinion, points out to having a pretty low self-worth when he was recruited and probably coming from a tough life. Maybe still going on a bit, with all of the gloomy talk in his language.
Bazz got in, willingly and aware Yhwach wasn’t as benevolent as he portrayed himself to be, but he was also young, grieving and pretty broken at that time.
Yhwach telling him he wasn’t the genius he thought he was also probably reinforced his need for validation and join the army to prove he’s capable. That need for validation seems to take precedence over revenge as he’s seen constantly challenging Jugram, rather than focus on his original purpose.
I don’t know about you, but I feel like there’s a really clear pattern here.
--
The overall war trauma and conflicts with Soul Society was probably the icing on the cake and a gold mine for Yhwach to endoctrinate more people and keep them in.
While that's probably a discussion for another topic, I think the war and the idea of the dangerous enemy/the existence of Yhwach, also benefit the leaders of Soul Society (probably Division 0 and some crooks in C46) in a similar way.
It gives them the perfect justification to maintain a military system and cast system that no one is allowed to question and should be honored to be part of (especially those who came from Rukongai and endured many hardships because of this same system).
ooc ; kinda on the fence believing Jugram had zero regrets in his life, aside from what happened with Bazz and was proud His Majesty found his power worth stealing.
It sounds more like a cope mechanism when you’re so far into something the idea of facing/ admitting the truth is unbearable.
I think His Majesty stealing his powers was the final nail in the coffin and made him realize, the bond was entirely one-sided and he didn’t care about him anymore than he cared about anyone else.
I don’t think he was entirely blind the whole time and probably became mildly aware (especially when Uryuu was appointed successor), that he, like others, could be disposable.
But when you’ve been a 1000 years into this, saw the man as your savior, your god, your father figure; also gained some benefits from joining: powers, a community (lot of the sternritter gives me the impression of having been outliers themselves in life prior to being recruited) ; it’s probably hard to admit that you may have been fooled and used (and done horrendous things yourself that contributed to this awful system) . Especially when you consider yourself intelligent and level headed.
In the real world, it usually takes a lot of therapy and other things, to cope with the shock of such realization and resetting your beliefs system; to accept it was /that/ bad : that the positive aspects were very slim and do not overshadow any of the negatives.
ooc ; getting obsessed over the idea of post war jugram adopting a stray, girl cat that hangs out around his neighbour. she's super spicy and he doesn't know what to do or think at first, but they ended up growing fond of each other.
after he's taken her in, she's still super picy and hissed at everyone except him. they spend they night sleeping curled up together and loved to relax together in the couch while contemplating how the rest of the world is fucked and healing together.
ooc ; post war Jugram living the country surrounded by cats, horses and donkeys (probably all rescues who have been let down by society too) is just a really cool vibe I can’t stop thinking about
ooc; might be biased but jugram strikes me as the type of person who prefers the company of animals to humans.
like you don't have to talk, you can understand each other through body languages, they ground you into the present, boundaries are expressed clearly and you can bask in each other's calming presence in simple silence. the kind of stuff that strikes me as his vibe.

ooc; something i find fascinating about this arc is, how despite being a much more in your face 'take no questionning' tyran, we've seen a several instances of Quincy still questionning Yhwach publicly (when he named Uryuu as his successor) and even turning against him, meanwhile Kyoraku got away with killing the Gotei best medics and casually bringing out Aizen on the battlefield. I assume this could probably be attributed to the fact that the Gotei has made its public philosophy that the collective's interest primes over the individuals' that they ingrain early on in training soldiers at the academy, to kind of implicity revoke their right to question authority and political decisions.
Meanwhile Yhwach is not exactly transparent about his motives and decisions to say the least.
Public perception and image probably play a role, too, despite taking very morally questionnable decision, Kyoraku is also known as the chill, brotherly, caring comrade and captain, same goes for good ol' Yama-ji (though Kyoraku at least shows way more self-awareness about the morality of his decisions), vs. Yhwach who is the epitome of antipathic character. Anyway, I find the contrast very interesting, goes to show that getting people to be obedient little soldiers that don't question authority can be done in very inscidious ways, and it's not necessarily in your face. I think it's also worth noting how the group who were presented as the monsters and bad lots at the beggining of the story (Hollows), actually turned out to be the better people with actual decent and well-meaning leader (who is coincidentally a woman) who cares about her people instead of war and political power games, despite being perpetually being treated like dog sh*t by everyone.
