Hi there, Victoria! This might be a weird question for you, but it's something I've been wondering for a little while - how do you think is the best way to promote an RP group? I have a group I've been working on for a while and I'm excited to drop it, but when I've worked on stuff in the past, they've never gained much traction and died without ever opening. How would you suggest getting more people to reach out?

hi lovely! this isn’t a weird question at all <3 the first thing I would say to do is make sure your promo queue is loaded and posting consistently in the tags! my pal @rey1x1 posted a guide on how to mass load promos right here that you can check out! personally I like to load up the queue using sets of different tags and then shuffle it so you’re posting in different tags every time, if that makes sense! I would say at least 20-30 posts a day from a promo queue is a good amount to start off with, depending on how active the tags you’re posting in are. 

second, shoutouts! if you’re not getting a lot of traction by just posting in the tags, sending out shoutout requests to rph blogs can be super helpful. if shoutouts make you nervous, some rphs (including myself) accept submitted promos if you prefer to do it that way instead!

teaser blogs and talk tags can also help boost interest, but personally I’ve never used either so I can’t offer much advice when it comes to those.

tentatively, i’ve decided to make a spreadsheets directory for rps. they’re added and removed at the request of the group’s owner but you can search by date added, genre, keywords, etc and you can easily see when a group was established and the group’s target size for muns. there’s a sheet for discord rps, tumblr rps and hybrid rps. i will try and keep it updated to the best of my ability but if the tags are stale i hope this can be a resource for all my fellow writers to advertise their groups or find a new group to join. please reblog to spread the word and keep and mind groups can only be added/removed via the WRITEDOME community server. all the info you need is within the source link. 💖

ADMIN TIP:

If someone offers you advice saying something about your roleplay, your character, etc is problematic talk it out. Don’t go jumping down their throats but handle it civily and professionally. Come to a compromise and fix what needs fixing. And if you need help fixing the issue? I’m sure there are plenty of people in the rpcw tag willing to help you out. 

Roleplaying is about learning not just about writing but about diversity and other important things. You can’t just do the writing without learning anything or you are cutting out half the fun.

Admin Tip: Even if your roleplay is 100% canon, it is possible to have non-binary characters. Most television shows run on the assumption that, sorted based on appearance, all characters are cis gender and that just does not have to be a thing when they’re presented in roleplay. Not everyone is given a chance to identify themselves officially, and it is very important to real non-binary people to see themselves represented. If you don’t want to specifically decide which characters are going to be non-binary, you can still add an *ed addendum somewhere on your character navigation that states that you encourage non-binary characters and that your applicants are free to apply for any character as non-binary instead of their assumed cis gender.

do you have a guide on publishing character teasers? I'm not sure how much is too much/too little to give away in them, or how detailed the graphics should be

Well, it does depend on how much/how little you want to give away! Do you want to impart a vague first impression, or spell the character out explicitly? How much time do you plan on spending on teasers, how much effort do you want to put in to this step of preopening? Your teasers could span anywhere from a single quote to a full paragraph: it really does depend on what effect you’re going for. Personally, I do like to vary this balance depending on the circumstances at hand. If I’ve already the bio, then I pull a few lines from the bio for the teaser. If I haven’t yet written the bio. then I write the teaser to be a skeleton for the bio. With TAT, the teasers were more detailed; with TAA I opted to go for the less formal “blurb” sort. It all does depend on your vision for your roleplay. As for graphics - that’s up to you, though generally teaser graphics are less detailed than the actual bio graphics.

Hello! I'm looking to start up my own rp group. I've been a member of plenty but never run any before. Do you have any tips or advice on how to build a successful group?

posting, queuing and promos are the main things that you need to be completely on it with. run queues on the main and a sideblog which will function as a promo blog. DON’T GIVE UP. gaining attention takes a while, don’t cave and open early because you need those members when you open. make sure that your queue is running throughout the day, in different ( but relevant ) tags. remember that only the first five tags show up in the actual tags when searching. 

make sure that you are friendly, that fcs are diverse in ethnicity, gender identity, size etc. make sure to promo before you open for apps, before you drop the rp, to gain that attention and hopefully get apps straight off the bat. 

make sure you utilise rph’s. ask for shoutouts, submit promos, ask for opinions and actually take on board the constructive criticism and be willing to change things. if you’re not great at graphics / themes, consider submitting a theme makeover to someone - this usually involves graphics too for an rph, but you may need to submit a separate form. make sure that you read the rules of the individual rph’s, and always be polite. 

make sure your plot has something different. make sure that it’s original, that it captures our interest. 

honestly, the best advice i can give you is: put the work in, and don’t give up.
