notes: Benzo is the eldest of their little group followed by Felicia, Vander and finally Silco. Silco and Vander share a 4 year age gap, mirroring Powder and Violet. This was done on purpose, showing how similar they really were.
“Vander, hurry up!” A young Benzo yelled, racing through the streets. Sixteen, he was, young and scrappy, ready to face anything head on. “Silco and Felicia are waiting for us!”
“I’m comin’, I’m comin!” Vander called back, already built like a tree in his ripe young age. But…of course, that’s what happens when you work the mines so young. Especially when you are the one doing the mining.
Silco and Felicia were scrawnier. They were “Pickers”, the ones who sorted valuables from rubble. Typically, children often found themselves in that category. Not Vander. He had the unfortunate gift of genetics shoving him into the “Miner” category far younger than most. That is where he had met Benzo, though, so he couldn’t complain too much.
He was three years older than Vander, and took him under his wing. He taught the young wolf things he never imagined he could do, like read and write, even calculate costs for this or that. Benzo’s father had been an accountant for some small businesses in the lanes, always finding ways to screw with the numbers just to steal enough to feed his son. This lead to troubles later on, and when when Benzo was eleven his father was murdered. That same day, the boy was sent to the mines. Vander had also met Felicia through working the mines. He couldn’t hate it when it was the place he started a family.
Felicia was 15, a sort of big sister to Vander. She taught him how to sneak food from the overseers, who to talk to and who to keep your mouth shut around. She was a fighter, always getting her ass beat just as much as she caused trouble. Her hands were always wrapped up and bloody, but she never stopped smirking. Not much was known about her past, all Vander knew was she was orphaned early on and raised by a pit fighter before he sent her to work the mines. She was almost considered to be a miner, before the force ultimately chose her to be a picker.
As for Silco…Silco was a street rat. When Vander had found him, he was curled up in an alleyway. Kid was 7 at that time, his pa was a nasty type of drunk, and his mother had abandoned him when he was three. That was two years ago, and he was now this quiet, soft spoken nine year old boy who was always stuck at Vander’s hip. He was like a little brother, something Vander always wanted. Cunning, observant and intelligent, he often came to their little group with bits of information he overheard the enforcers say as he was sneaking around. He picked up reading and writing quickly, and kept a journal of plans for their future. It was because of Silco and Vander that the idea of Zaun was born.
Felicia’s voice rang out, pulling Vander from his thoughts. “Took you bozos long enough!”
Silco had this sly little smirk on his long face, as if glad he wasn’t the Bozo for once.
Benzo huffed, “We had t’ go from the mines and sneak around the Lanes. You know how long a trip that is?”
“I could do that in fifteen minutes,” Silco squeaked, giving off that toothy grin.
Vander just rolled his eyes and gave him a playful bop on the back of his head. “You don’t count, you’re half rat.” He teased, watching the boy scrunch his nose and stick out his tongue, to which he stuck his out in return. “Anyway…what did you guys find?”
Felicia grinned, pulling at something hidden in the shadows. “I give you our newest member!”
The boy was ragged, so skinny you could see his bones through his skin, cheeks sunken in from starvation. His hair was a sort of dirty blonde, greasy and thin. His clothes were torn, and thin as paper. Poor kid looked petrified.
“Where did you find him?” Benzo asked, shoving off his coat to put on the younger boy. He looked like a baby bird engulfed in a nest of fabric.
Felicia hesitated, her face flushed like she had done something wrong.
“The Scasinth District,” Silco snitched, quiet, watching Benzo’s face turn pale as he backed off.
“You know how many diseases are there? And drugs?” He shouted, furiously ranting and rambling about the risks.
Vander watched the boy try to speak, but each time he opened his mouth the words seemed to vanish, and he shut down, his eyes welling up.
Felicia spat, “He’s not diseased, dickhead!”
“Then why did you find him in the Scasinth!?” Benzo barked back, fists clenching as that vein in his neck started to show.
Before Felicia could scream back and cause more issues, Vander stepped in. “Ask him, Ben. If he’s really to be trusted, he’ll spill.”
The boy’s face turned ash white, panic in his blue eyes. Silco moved to perch on a pipe, watching closely.
“Well?” Benzo hissed.
“I-I-“ he hesitated, voice cracking.
“Leave him alone, guys,” Felicia was visibly upset, her hand on the boy’s shoulder.
“It’s okay,” the boy murmured. “I’m not sick…not like you think…my head just…is different.”
Vander raised a brow, crossing his arms. “Different how?”
He licked his cracked lips. “I have conditions…I see things that aren’t there and…and I feel too much but too fast…I wasn’t wanted so…they left me.”
“See things?” Benzo shifted uncomfortably. The boy just nodded, clearly done talking.
“Just give him a chance,” Felicia pleaded, “he’s a misfit, just like us. There’s no place for him in the world so he was sent here.”
Vander gave Benzo a look before-
“He so much as sneezes and we’re sending his ass back.”
“Deal,” Felicia smiles.
Vander looks at their newest member. “What’s your name, kid?”
Yup. You read this right. Why word it like this? Well, we’ve analyzed Cait rather extensively and in this au, she is on the spectrum of autism, which is not a mental illness, but a neurodevelopmental condition!
Explanation:
Caitlyn shows an intense, nearly obsessive focus on her investigative work, which is hyperfixation in its finest form. For example, she fixates on the mystery surrounding the lab explosion and later on solving her "Grand Conspiracy," even when ignored or stonewalled by her corrupt superiors. She seems most comfortable speaking on things she fixates on.
Caitlyn is often very direct and blunt in her speech. She describes herself as a "misfit,". She struggles with navigating the social conventions of her high-society upbringing. Another example of her social struggles is in the scene with her and Vi in the brothel, where she had to become someone else, and ultimately struggling.
She often pays close attention to detail, an corrects on anyone who may not say something correctly. In the episode “Happy Progress Day” Caitlyn, without any encouragement, corrects the other enforcers that an airship has a rigid metal hull and is therefore not a blimp. This detail-oriented behavior, especially the need to correct inaccuracies, is a trait that can be associated with autism.
Lastly, her intense, sometimes rigid, adherence to her personal moral code and desire for justice is a possible neurodivergent trait.
This along with the trauma of losing her mother gives us Caitlyn. These struggles turn her into who she is, and how she uniquely navigates her version of the world.
reminder this is an AU and this perspective is brought on by experience, and analysis. Please be kind, if you do not agree that is okay, all I ask is to scroll by if it isn’t your cup of tea
Ekko’s mental illness and how it impacts him.
✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐
In this AU, Ekko has OCD, and no, not in the way most think with cleanliness and such.
He has repetitive compulsive behaviors and thoughts that make him need to complete every task to his standard of perfection. If this is not done, he does it again and again until he gets the outcome he wants. If he cannot, he grows severely anxious. He shows this in his leadership. When things don’t go exactly as calculated, he repeats.
Those with OCD also tend to hoard things. In Ekko’s case, memories. The best example is how he remembered perfectly Jinx’s every move from the game they played as kids, giving him the upper hand.
PTSD. Ekko most definitely has PTSD. He watched Benzo die, and is haunted by that murder. He watched Powder in real time become Jinx, completely unable to help her. This struggle impacts how he is toward others: extremely protective, but rather distant to new relationships, often guarding himself.
Violet also has BPD in this universe, with the symptoms she shares with Jinx, though hers is not as advanced: explanation.
Vi has major black and white thinking, struggling to accept changes in people and seeing someone for something new. “You killed her” an example where Vi essentially cannot see Jinx as her sister at all.
Self sabotage. She constantly puts herself into self sabotage. Physically, yes, but especially mentally. Blaming herself for absolutely everything and believing it.
Fearing abandonment. Vi had lost everyone. She shows multiple times severe distrust, and even going out of her way to not grow close to people to avoid this, ex: “oil and water. It’ll never work”. This can further be proven by her spiral after she and Caitlyn split.
Emotional highs and lows. Vi struggles immensely with ups and downs, especially with anger.
Many may ask why Vi seems more stable than Jinx if this is the case, and this has everything to do with upbringing. Violet had stability into her teenage years, the most critical portion of her life spent with Vander, who helped her power through said mental health illnesses. And in her late teens, early 20s, she spent time in prison, which caused a dissociation and isolation, giving her impulsive violence and anger as her only coping tool.
Jinx, however, was allowed to be impulsive at the most crucial portion of her development. Silco never punished her or swayed her into another direction, nor did he give her any ways to cope with her mental struggles, leading to her spiral.
Vi also seems to suffer with PTSD, and very likely depression.
We will explain this link through the girls’ biological father, Connol. Since BPD is a trauma response AND genetic (I believe up to 40% of cases are genetic) we use this blank character to finally give him a story, which you all will see later on. So yeah, the girls get this disorder from Connol.
Now, remember. This is literally a story, and an analysis based on observation and personal experience so let’s be kind please and thank you.
Jinx’s Mental Illness and Hallucinations. How each impacts her.
✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐ᝰ.ᐟ✐
Mental Illness: We opted to say Jinx suffers from BPD. As someone with this disorder, I have seen a *lot* of the same symptoms in her as I myself show. This helps connect me to the character I write, which hopefully will make her feel more genuine and human. She also shows major signs of PTSD, which can cause psychosis to varying degrees.
Mylo - The main voice. Mylo often spews cruel lies into Jinx’s head, always trying to prove that her self doubts and insecurities are true. He shows up strongest during a split.
(For those who do not know, a split is essentially where someone loses all positive feelings for someone or something. Imagine someone who has only an "on" or "off" switch for a light. They lack a dimmer switch that would allow them to see the gray areas and complexities of a person or situation.
When a person with BPD idealizes someone, it's like the light is "on"—that person is seen as perfect and flawless. However, after a small conflict or disappointment, the light is flipped to "off"—and that same person is suddenly seen as completely bad, evil, or worthless, which is the split.)
Claggor: Grounder. Claggor rarely, if ever, speaks. His face is always twisted into this anguished expression. He is always right behind her, doing his best to ground his younger sister even in death. He is frightening to see, but not to hear. Jinx is not as afraid of him unless she’s reminded of his tragic end.
Silco: The Mind. Silco never shows up when Jinx wants him to, only when she needs him, typically in times where she is irritated that he appears. He gives her calculated advice, breaking down outcomes, or simply asking her questions and making observations. She’s rarely afraid of him, just rather snippy when he appears.
Isha: Protector. She rarely shows up, but when she does she makes sure to silence the voices in her head, keeping Jinx from massive breakdowns as best as possible.
Connol, Felicia, and Vander: The beasts. They are extremely distorted, monstrous versions of the ones she had loved who cannot speak properly, so they scream distorted words. She is utterly terrified of them, and they show up when she is on the verge of a breakdown.
Iridescent eyes - instead of just pink, we have opted for iridescent. They shift from blue to pink, sometimes a mix of both. The pink is the main color, but her eyes work similar to hazel eyes, where lighting has a huge part in what color her eyes look. They are completely vibrant pink when she is “shimmered up”.
ⴵᖭི༏ᖫྀ Ekko:
Vitiligo. Our version of Ekko has vitiligo, which is the reason his hair had become white. His hourglass marking is covering up parts where he lost pigmentation. The older he gets, the more it shows.
╾━╤デ╦︻ Caitlyn:
Prosthetic eye. Yes, she is going full blown terminator /j. Her eye was carefully designed by Jinx and Ekko. It analyzes everything around, including measurements. (Inspired by a piece of art I had seen, unknown artist but whoever you are? wonderful work)
Caitlyn now opts for a mix of Piltovian elegance and Zaunite roughness, showing that if she can adapt, so can everyone else.
𓃡(ง'̀-'́)ง Vi:
-Violet now rocks snake bites, a new addition to her style. Her hair remains the same length and style as the end of Season two.
