When I was a kid, during recess we discovered a leaky spigot that was creating like a constant mud puddle. Over the next couple of weeks, we started spending the entirety of recess making a dam. Damming what? Honestly nothing. Just building an increasingly giant wall of mud and sticks around that spigot. Other kids would gather around to watch or take part.

Eventually the teachers made us stop, but for a glorious two weeks, we were living that dream.

you know the world is fucked when your physiotherapist asks you why you havent tried swimming like she suggested last time you were there, and your response is "well im transgender and due to the recently passed legislation, swimming pool changing rooms feel unsafe"

i nearly cried too. im glad i didnt but. the world is such a scary place right now, especially the uk where i live. i shouldnt feel scared to use a public swimming pool because i might be harassed or assaulted. everything feels like its going backwards :(

Say you want to make a map of the US. Like, you want to color in a map of the US to indicate certain properties like income or elevation or whatever. So you go online and find a map to color in. And there's never a perfect one. There's always something difficult about each one. I got sick of that shit and made a map without the problems that have been driving me insane for years. Presenting, my maximally manipulable US map!

This map doesn't show anything in particular but exists for you to use it to show whatever you need to, with minimal headaches! As the name says, its goal is to be manipulable.

Features:

Crisp lines, solid colors, easy to fill in with the paint bucket

Clearly labeled with postal abbreviations

Labels do not touch each other or borders

State labels are unaffected by the paint bucket hitting the surrounding land, so you don't need to fill in holes in letters

State labels can be removed and replaced with whatever you need

No tiny land masses that you miss with the paint bucket, most states can be filled with one paint bucket and the ones that can't have large pieces to avoid missing them

Territories included in case you need them for your map, but easy to remove as well

Easy to add background or move pieces around to add text

Probably other stuff too idk I'm making this post several weeks after making the map so I've forgotten some of what went into it

I hope this is useful to folks because I spent hoursssss on it but that's fine, it's already been useful to me :)

Started playing around with this. Some interesting things I found. (Disclaimer is that I am not a graph theorist and don't know much).

It's "well known" that you can't 3-color the continental US state map. One issue is Nevada - it borders five states which form a cycle. Any odd cycle can't be 2-colored, and therefore that 5-cycle (CA-OR-ID-UT-AZ) must require at least three colors. Nevada, bordering all of them require a fifth. West Virginia and its borders (PA-OH-KY-VA-MD) have the same issue.

What is possible however is to do a 4-coloring of the continental US where these two cycles are the only obstructions to a 3-coloring. In the picture below I have a 4-coloring of the continental US where the only places I use the 4th color (yellow) is in Virginia and Utah, both corresponding to the 3-coloring obstructions of Nevada and WV I mentioned above.

Something like this would seem (to me) to give a statement of some form like:

"Any graph which is not 3-colorable must contain cycles of odd length, and all uses of the 4th color can be constrained to regions bounded by these odd cycles."

Somehow I doubt this is true, but I'd love to see a counterexample.

Wholesome interactions on my recent trip to Hawaii:

The lady who we watched do the smoothest parking job backing into a tiny space with a truly massive car and when I complimented her skills the guy with her was ecstatic and added, “She drives that beast like it’s a sport car, she’s incredible!”

The man on the beach who watched my beloved and I emerge triumphant from our first foray snorkeling and went, “Was it fun?” and then laughed in delight when we enthusiastically told him it was incredible.

The queer taco truck worker who told us the nearest bathroom was at Burger King and sarcastically drawled, “Have it your way,” and then absolutely lost it when I echoed, “Shit it your way.”

The lady and her friend with a Californian surfer drawl who stopped to hear our dissertation on the chicken drama who fell in love with the scrungly hen with us.

The couple at the musubi truck who passed their table to us and excitedly asked if we’d tried the slushy. When we dejectedly said they were all out the guy slowly lowered his cup and said, “They’re awful, you’re not missing out,” and we all laughed at his absurd attempt to spare our feelings.

The man in the airport with a cute silly lock screen who when I said, “I know it’s not polite to notice but your Lock Screen is so cute,” informed me the characters name was Steve the Fish and he was a French meme.
