The vegan discourse on this site is pretty wild but like…y'all..there are vegans that think u can stop water shortages if we didn’t produce meat…
Global annual water consumption ranges from 34-76 trillion gallons annually, and approximately a fifth of that water consumption is from animal agriculture alone. It has been conclusively demonstrated that the water footprint of any animal product is larger than the water footprint of a wisely chosen crop product with equivalent nutritional value. To demonstrate this, 1L of soya milk has a water footprint of about 300 L, whereas the water footprint of 1L of cow’s milk from the same country is more than three times bigger. The water footprint of a 150g soya burger appears to be about 160L, while the water footprint of an average 150-g beef burger produced in the same place is nearly fifteen times bigger.
We’re not going to stop global water shortages by not producing animal products, since corporations hoard and commodify natural water reserves and climate change is causing massive droughts. As you can see from the stats above though, a global move away from animal agriculture would represent a pretty significant step in the right direction. We need to make many changes to fight the growing water crisis, both as a society and as individuals, but not wasting resources on massively water intensive animal agriculture production is far from a laughable suggestion as part of a wider solution.
