About your recent post regarding transmasc Utena headcanons, everyone who gets Weird with their reason for not liking it always hates transfem Anthy headcanons too, which really betrays that their problem isn’t removing female characters from a show about women (A problem I have with some framings of a transmasc Utena, if you were here for That Guy you know what I mean), but they’re really upset about removing cis people from a show about… let me check my notes here…. Why heteronormativity and strict gender roles are bad for everyone and the only way to be happy is to completely disregard those strict boxes of acceptable prince/princess behavior and create a life of your own outside of that system especially if you’re queer. That show.

Like, even if you ignore the obvious fact that these trans readings always do have actual, good, real evidence behind them (there’s a great post somewhere about all the reasons behind Transfem Anthy headcanons, both thematic and in terms of evidence pulled from the show itself), just the theme and final message of the show is about “gender is BS and a prison, do whatever you want forever” which is. The complete opposite of what transphobes think. That last anon can go fuck themself and then learn to read. Sorry if none of this makes sense, I am fueled by 3 doctor peppers and am SICK of /radfems/whatever other assorted transphobes in the fandom of Revolutionary Girl Utena of all shows pretending to actually like this show and not the weird Plato cave version of what they think it’s about. I swear to god every post people like that make about why ‘no actually everyone HAS to be cis a story about how women experience hardship can’t be about trans women’ sounds exactly like something Akio would say.

It’s actually so strange how people watch this anime and come to the conclusion that we need to be more strict about gender. Like what. Thank you for the kind ask, I appreciate it and agree!

The Silverwood Curse and its Reflections to Real Life Mental Struggles

I often see the silverwood curse discussed in how it affects the characters and their relationships inside of Witch Hat Atelier, but I don’t see a lot of discussion about what the silverwood curse reflects in real life. There is a lot to be said about the metaphors (and straight-up representation) of physical disability, but there’s also a huge aspect of real-life mental health struggles reflected in this. The silverwood curse makes its host unable to feel “at home” without the tree growing, leading them to live in constant stress. This is very reflective of how a lot of people who struggle with mental illness, including myself, end up feeling scared of getting better or feeling happy. This fear leads people to suffer more with mental health.

There are many reasons someone may be scared of getting better mentally, but I think there are two prominent ones. Those being: fearing you’ll have your happiness taken away or being unable to feel it again, and fearing you’ll lose a part of yourself. I think both of these are also reflected in the silverwood curse. Without the silverwood living inside its host, they will literally lose a part of themselves, physically speaking, because of how the silverwood heals physical injuries. This might also lead them to lose an important bodily function, depending on where and how severely they had been injured. The silverwood curse also limits true happiness to one occurrence, since the host will grow into a tree once they feel happy enough to be at home.

These reflections of mental health within the silverwood curse in Witch Hat Atelier are very important. Not only does it help people who struggle with their mental health feel seen, but it can also help everyone understand the characters and maybe even people in their lives a bit more. If you are struggling with mental health, please reach out to a professional or a loved one for help. I know it can be scary, but you do deserve to feel happy. <3
