it strikes arya as something of a passing stupid test, but her skepticism
can only stretch so far ; though the gift he claims is paltry small compared to
what she’s learned ( to what she’s done ), yet she decides to play along,
if only for a lack of anything better to do.
she does chew at her lip, though, searching the room for something
appropriate ; eventually settles on a worn copy ( cracked, she soon
realizes, along the spine ) of an old dusty bible from a nearby bookshelf,
and it feels wrong in her hands ( not my god ) but she ignores that,
settles back into her chair and conceals the tome under her side of the
desk, just in case. ( it occurs to her after she’s seated that there would
be a myriad of ways to cheat ; there are many ways, she recalls, to know
the world for those who cannot see, and if he knows the room as well as
she suspects, all he’d need to do is listen close, and pay heed to the
movements of air past his skin as she traverses the room – it’s nothing
PSYCHIC at all, not really, no more than SHE is when she does the
same, or when she reads a lie from someone’s face. )
he’s met thousands of her kind who didn’t believe in the
power of the supernatural. hell, he was one of them. but he didn’t intend
to prove that he is psychic. he was just observant. a quality which
many lacked. the sound of the girl’s feet, the sound of the dust that
falls to the floor when she picks up the object, tells him it’s old & is from
the bookshelf. by the time the girl reaches towards him, a brilliant mind
has already formulated what could it possibly be.
❛ it’s a book. very old, & probably
ragged too. it’s an old edition, so it was in a corner usually
untouched. IT’S THE BIBLE. ❜
but, he can feel the uncertainty in her words. how her voice
is so confident, lacking the surprise when you expect the unexpected. that
wouldn’t prove him to be the smartest man in the room, anyone can guess.
ergo, he will REFINE his answer.
❛ you also think I’m lying. that a person
can’t be psychic. no such thing exists. you think that if
someone listens carefully, they can easily figure out what
object it is. the bible. it’s not very pure to you.
you are not very sure whether holding it would be right. but,
just to prove me wrong, you have. which means either you
don’t believe in god, or you follow a different religion. ❜
( ALL SAID WITH HIS HANDS STILL CLASPED OVER HIS EYES. )
