Another thing I think Q Hayashida does really well is portraying closeness. It happens way too often that I'm watching or reading something and the characters are supposedly REALLY close but like ? They don't feel like that. Like you have characters that are supposed to be best friends and would die for each other but they're so... Stiff? They don't go to each other houses, don't touch more than acquaintances, their conversations are politely casual and the same with couples, the only reason you know they're dating is bc they kiss, but there's not much else. Sometimes is bad writing, other it feels like the author is so scared to not portray a perfectly healthy relationship (romantic or otherwise) that it just comes out... Bland. We're human, sometimes people bother each other, they cross lines...
In Dorohedoro they annoy each other! They do the boring stuff together!! Not just fighting! Nikaido goes with Caiman to take pictures inside his mouth, teases him when nothing shows up except a cavity and invites him to eat. THE SCENE WITH NOI GOING TO SHIN'S ROOM AND DECIDING "I'm going to take a nap here" (It's one of my favorites). Caiman helping Nikaido with the zombies thing so she could get the meat grinder. Shin opening Noi's head to put those devil things in her brain so she doesn't die when she said she didn't want that. Caiman bursting into Nikaido's room and snooping around. Nikaido goes with him to Kasukabe's house in new years even though she doesn't have to do anything there, he's just doing an errand for work, they just like spending time together!! Everything that is going on with the crosseyes. Ebisu messing with Fujita all the time.
You don't see only the epic movie moments in life threatening situations, you see them eat together, do chores... It feels real the closeness they have
