“When did I ever imply that I wanted you?” @freckledrp
David recoiled at Jack’s words, blinking.
Pain was reeling inside his chest, similar to the sensation of choking up.
“…You didn’t feel anything?” He breathed out, shaking his head. “No- you…”
David’s lips were still tingling from the kiss, that wasn’t something he couldn’t ignore. Jack couldn’t ignore it either, no matter how much he wanted to. But god, Jack was dating Katherine-
“Shit,” David backed up a few steps, running his hand over his face. “I’m sorry, I didn’t… I should go-” He said quickly, wishing the ground would just swallow him up where he was standing.
The words were very bitter on Jack’s tongue, his own lips stinging /stinging/ from the kiss. It had been so intense, then again so had their fight.
“Ya gotta relize that this ain’t gonna work out alright? I have a fucking /child/ now I have to take care of!” He snapped, loosing his cool, the look on Davey’s face. His broken expression… he couldn’t handle that but it was too late.
“A what?”
David’s eyes widened. Something twisted in his gut, a feeling he couldn’t name exactly, but it was utterly sickening. The feeling was a dread that no amount of life experience could’ve prepared him for. Dear god…
“Katherine’s pregnant?” David asked, gulping. He felt himself take an uncertain step back, his hand climbing from his face to his hair. He shook his head, not wanting to believe Jack’s words.
“…When… When did you find out?”
Jack had tears in his eyes now, they were stupid tears that he hated with a passion. They blurred his vision and made his eyes sing.
“This morning.”
It had been a ruff day, and it just kept getting worse. He wanted to throw up. Oh gosh he was just making it worse.
“I think I’m gonna throw up, gosh Dave…”
“Oh my god…”
David just couldn’t look at Jack anymore, choosing rather to stare at the wooden floor boards under his shoes. He didn’t want to picture it, the things Jack and Katherine had to do for her to wind up-
They made David sick.
“Are you insane? Raising a kid? Katherine’s barely making money as a reporter- you’re a god damn newsie,” David’s tone turned into frustration, balling his fists at his sides.
“Shit, this can’t be happening…” David moved to the couch, sinking down into it. His stomach felt all kinds of wrong. “Jack, you can’t… You can’t raise a kid. You can’t.”
“You don’t think I /know/ that?” Jack hissed leaning up against the wall heavily. “I was so stupid Dave, I shoulda listened to ya an stayed away from her but…”
He trailed off, he closed his eyes but could only picture Katherine. Katherine. Katherine. Katherine.
“I couldn’t do it. I got her legs open first try and jus’ /couldn’t/ stop I-” he shook his head pressing a hand over his eyes.
He saw Katherine again, but this time it was her heart broken expression. The expression he’d seen that very morning. Her bottom lip quivering, her hands trembling.
“Stop talking.” David pleaded, covering his ears with his hands.
God, his brain kept making things up. Jack kissing Katherine, the two of them laying together, Jack’s lips on Katherine, his hands on Katherine-
And not him.
David laughed pitifully at himself, dropping his hands down and his elbows landed on his knees. “…Call me an idiot for falling in love with a dumbass like you…” He muttered, shaking his head and standing from the couch. David couldn’t even spare Jack a glance as he reached down and grabbed his hat that had fallen on the floor.
“I don’t even care anymore… Not like you need me anyway, you’ve got her.” David spoke, ice cold and resentful as he made his way toward the door. “You can figure it out on your own.”
“You are an idiot.” Jack agreed watching him stand up, swallowing hard, a lump in his throat.
“I ruin everything, I’m suprised you didn’t figure that out sooner. Woulda spared us a lot less heartache.” He muttered his eyes still red and brimming with tears.
His chest hurt so badly. So this is what it felt like to have your heart broken? It was something Jack had never experienced before. Yet here he was.
“Don’t go.” He muttered suddenly to Davey, almost a plea for help. “Dave, you know… please c'mon I can’t do this.”
David damned himself for hesitating, damned himself for wanting to absolutely crumble at the broken sound of Jack's voice. It was fair- no, it wasn't fair at all that he was so weak when it came to Jack. Jack would never feel like this for him. Jack wouldn't hesitate to leave him in the dust if the appropriate situation came around...
David turned around, seeing Jack's face and getting the urge to double over. He didn't allow himself to cry, despite the strongest urge in his body being to do just that.
"...I can't, Jack. I-I just..." David raised his hands up a little before they dropped limply to his sides.
"...You're so... You're so happy with her," He spoke, beginning to draw forward again. "You smile wider than I've ever seen you smile, you laugh with her, you... You look at her like she's the best thing that's ever happened to you."
David wiped one of his eyes. "How do you think it feels for me... Watching that? It hurts- God, it hurts so bad to want you Jack, and there's not a damn thing I can do about it..."
