Waldkindergarten. 🌲🌳🌲🌳

A forest kindergarten is a type of preschool education for children between the ages of three and six that is held almost exclusively outdoors. Whatever the weather, children are encouraged to play, explore and learn in a forest or natural environment. The adult supervision is meant to assist rather than lead. It is called Waldkindergarten (German: literally, children’s forest garden).

There is usually no classroom. Children play outdoors, even in snowy weather. Proponents say the centers toughen children up and the experience reduces incidents of colds and flus. If it does get exceptionally cold, the children (and teacher) can seek respite in the camp teepee (which also has a campfire) or a small wooden classroom - but the vast majority of time is spent outdoors, even in three feet of snow.

Letting Children Teach Themselves: “Not being there all the time allows them to assess risks better. The idea is for children to learn by themselves, learn from each other, and learn from their experiences and their mistakes,” Thorsten Reinecke, the head of Die Kleinen Pankgrafen, explains.

‘Massive’ Mental and Physical Benefits: Schulte-Ostermann says the risks are outweighed by the “massive” mental and physical benefits of playing outside. “Children who have attended a Waldkindergarten have a much deeper understanding of the world around them, and evidence shows they are often much more confident and outgoing when they reach school.”

Forest kindergartens were developed in Denmark in the 1950’s, carried over to Germany in the 1960’s, and have become increasingly popular worldwide. By late 2012, the number of forest kindergartens in Germany surpassed 1,000. There are also several forest kindergartens in the United States and the U.K.
