We walked home really drunk from the bar and I stole my girlfriend one of those sunflowers. I ripped an old decrepit 7ft sunflower out of the ground in the middle of Canadian November as a gift to my girlfriend on our “first date”.

Bravery

I found that I understood on some level what bravery was my entire life. In elementary school I would fight bullies by bullying them, because that seemed just to me at the time. I always believed that fighting for what was right and for others, who couldn’t always fight for themselves, was not only right and just, but above all brave.

As an adult I can’t say I entirely disagree with that view. Now I just understand the wisedom behind such claims.

Being brave isn’t about diving in front of the bullet or even standing up for what you believe in. Being brave is doing something thats hard. Being brave is being scared, but doing it anyways. Bravery shows in the strangest ways. Diving in front of the bullet is a symbol of being brave because most people are scared to die but cast that aside. Standing up for whats right is thought to be brave because it’s hard to stand in front a mass of people telling you you’re wrong and still fighting.

I know someone who thinks being brave would be willing to put up his fists to someone trying to hurt another. Maybe that does make him brave, but I dont think it does. Because he isnt afraid to be hurt and if it comes to physical pain he will fight, but no other forms of suffering. He would stand by and do nothing as families lost their homes to our government. He wouldn’t lift a finger for many things. He taught me what bravery is, by seeing its absence. I challenge you to be brave. To really be brave. Your cheating if you want to die and you jump in front of a bullet. You’re cheating if physical pain is something you could live with and wouldn’t allow it for another. Yet other suffering you would happily hand out in your other actions though you yourself can barely survive the suffering you’re handed. Sometimes showing COMPASSION in a world that only seems to hold more suffering is the hardest thing. Thats why we live in a world that only hands out suffering, because so few are really brave.
