"Well, my mother was the one who taught me, and she's a bit more traditional about magic." She smiled as she made more of the ethereal butterflies appear, glitter appearing from their wings as they flapped.
"You know, if you ever wanted to attempt to learn what sort of magic you're capable of, you're always welcome to come to Veloria. Between the different sorts there, I'm sure we could come up with something."
"Reaaallllyyy?" Her eyes lit up at that. "I'd love to. Could just keep trying something out whenever I visit." Maybe she could even learn some useful magic along with the fun kind. That way she could help justify the trips more. "I did pretty well with some of the lessons at the Paperfold Academy so there's gotta be something in Veloria I can learn too."
"Well, thank you," she said, finally taking her hand back. "It always means so much to hear people outside Veloria say things like that." With that, she held both hands up, and a shimmery, colorful butterfly faded into existence between them. "Tempera actually taught me illusion magic. He learned it himself to play with Cadenza. It was never something I thought much about."
"Did he really? I figured you knew everything magic related." Her hand automatically reached out to touch it. Watching the sparkles surround her fingers. Even if it wasn't real, it looked so pretty. "I wish I could do stuff like that. I still don't really understand any of the things I can do now."
"I was. I think even the most prepared person would be." She smiled, unconsciously reaching out and gently pushing a piece of March's hair out of her eyes. "But I still continued on because I knew it was what I needed to do. And I think it turned out fairly well."
"I would have never guessed. You always look so perfectly elegant and confident." It's how she wished she could be sometimes. Instead she just ended up coming off silly and childish. Cursed to never really be taken seriously. "I always hear good things when people talk about the way you rule, so I think it's turned out better than just well."
"I am. She's been growing more and more since she was accepted to Paperfold University." That was certainly an understatement considering all that had been going on. "I don't think she's aware I knew, but she's always been concerned about inheriting the throne. She would tell Tempera she wished he could. But I think she'll be okay."
"You are her mother after all. I've always heard that mothers just know things. Like a secret ability." She liked to think that it really was a special power you have deep down that you can only tap into when you become a parent. "I think she'd make for a great queen~ She's got the best role model for it, plus a lot of great people around to offer advice."
"Were you ever nervous to become the queen?"
"That is part of it. Another part is the guard does quite a lot of community service-related things as part of their job." Which yes, a few who wanted to do more fighting were a little frustrated with. But it wasn't as if it was a secret part of the job.
She couldn't help but laugh lightly at March's comment. "He does work quite hard to look that cool. Don't tell him I told you that, though."
"Heehee, the secret is safe with me~" She held a hand to her mouth to try and hide the giggle. "I heard Princess Cadenza got to really shine out there too. You must be pretty proud right?"
Viola smiled and shrugged. "We used to have quite a bit of conflict, but that was long ago. There's a saying now that Velorians don't start wars, but they do end them. Our participation in the battle at Amphoreus was the first time in quite a while we got to demonstrate that. For most of my son's life, our military has mostly been for show."
"I thought it was odd such a peaceful place had a bunch of trained guard, but I guess that's how you keep it safe." She did not mention the fact some of them seemed a little bored with their job.
"For their first big battle, they all did a great job. Tempera always looked cool, but going out there in action even cooooler."
“Well, if you do ever find the time to visit, we’ll welcome you with open arms.” She moved to one of the benches. “I’ve heard so many stories of your exploits, and whenever my family boards, they always have a tale to tell when they return home. Veloria itself hasn’t seen much conflict in a few hundred years, so we take what we can get.” She patted the seat beside her for March to sit.
“I hope you don’t mind me taking up a bit of your precious birthday time.”
She hesitated for a moment before hurrying over to plop down. Glancing at the elegant way Viola carried herself and attempting to sit up nice and straight. "Oh please, this is the coolest thing ever. Not often I can say I got to spend my birthday with a queen~ Besides, there's still lots of hours left in the day. Probably gonna just be partying all night." At least that was her plan. If everyone else was joining in was up for debate.
"Veloria is such a pretty and peaceful place. I always feel so at ease when I'm there. Which is very rare to find. I keep expecting something crazy to happen like everywhere else we end up."
Viola couldn't help but laugh at how quickly March went between trying to be formal to excited and back again.
"I 'came all this way' to see you and the others. I thought it'd be nice to spend some time when we're not in the middle of a war. I just used the excuse of your birthday to finally do that." She let March take the basket. "Those were all hand-made by fairies I know. Cooking is one of their many specialties."
"Fairy food? Oooh, I did hear about how good it is. I've always wanted to try some myself." She wondered how different it tasted. Did they sprinkle magic fairy dust?
"Well welcome aboard the express. You really have caught us at a good time." No extreme peril or anything today at least. "How are things going over in Veloria? I swear we need to go vacation there again."
@freezingcutie
It wasn't often that Viola left Veloria these days; when she was younger, she traveled all the time, to different worlds or even just space stations to visit those who lived and worked there. The only time she'd traveled after Tempera was born was to assist in the battle with Amphoreus.
But this time she was boarding the Express, with the intention of visiting a certain birthday girl. She arrived with a giant basket and a smile.
"Happy birthday, Miss March 7th," she said when the girl noticed her entering the party car. "I brought a bit of a treat for you." It was more than 'a bit,' though. Someone like March could probably eat the entire basket of sweets in one sitting if she put her mind to it, but it was still quite a lot; various cakes, candies and other sweets she'd had fairies she knew make. Most of them were by Safir and Evie, though she'd gotten others involve.
March always enjoyed making a big deal out of her birthday. And why shouldn't she? After all the struggles they kept being put through, she deserved it. She was still trying to get the others to do the same for themselves, but they never tell her the day.
She had heard someone was boarding the train from Veloria, but didn't expect it to be the queen herself. "O-oh, miss um your queenliness." March stood up straight and then did a little bow.
The moment she saw the gift though, she let out a gasp, taking the basket. Just staring wide-eyed at all the different treats for a moment. "Woooow. It must really be my lucky day to get sweets hand delivered by royalty." She looked very giddy.
"Thank you. Did you really come all this way just for this?" Geeze, if she had known a queen would be here she'd try and prepare a little better.
Dan Heng paused at that, thinking.
"...would we even be able to take anything physical out of Amphoreus?" he asked. "Things can go in, but we have yet to see evidence of things going out."
"Doesn't mean we can't still go shopping," Caelus said.
"Exactlyyyyy. Shopping is more than just leaving with something. Browsing is also fun." Although she did usually leave with multiple bags. "There are so many pretty handcrafted things in the markets here."
"That's not as fun, though." Caelus easily fell into step with the other two like they hadn't just spent months apart. "Where are we going?"
"March wanted to have a look around, now that she can interact with people. We're just seeing what's going on."
"Yeah. I spent a long time walking around, but the best part of seeing somewhere new is getting to talk about it with friends." She looked between them both. Even when they weren't all next to each other, they were at least able to text or talk on the phone.
"It's also really, really hard to go shopping when the vendor can't see you and you can't pick anything up to look at it."
Caelus had been so focused on digging that he hadn't heard them approached, and he jolted in surprise enough to tumble the can over.
Dan Heng sighed as their friend crawled out, and he held a hand out. "You're going to get sick, digging through the trash like that."
"...if I'm sick, I can stay in my room and play video games, though."
"And what if you get so sick you can't even play video games huh?" She wagged a finger. "We need to get you one of those trash picker arms to use instead of stuffing yourself in silly."
"To be fair, our brains are usually 'mushy' when we get back from an expedition. At least since Caelus joined." He couldn't recall most of them ever being this long or dramatic.
"Speaking of." His gaze went right to a trash can, with a familiar torso sticking out of it.
“Very true. I think we deserve a really nice long vacation after four crazy missions. No one sticks back on the train either. We all go out and enjoy it.” She gave his arm a hug.
Following his gaze, March slowly shook her head. Yet she couldn’t help but smile. “Our little raccoon at it again.” At least this sort of trouble was minimal. “Heeeeeeeeeey, finding anything interesting in there?”
"Well, I'm sure people will be happy to finally meet their 'rosy celestial maiden.'" His voice, on the surface, was as flat as ever, but March knew him well enough to pick up on that hint of teasing.
"It's pretty easy to fit more into an expedition when the time is different from the outside. We thought we were here for months, while outside, it wasn't even a day, it seems."
"Ohhh, did that keep catching on?" She giggled. "Hmmm I dunno, maybe I should keep that as a secret identity. It sounds like the perfect name for fighting crime by night.... although I guess they don't really have night here do they?"
"All the time stuff is confusing. The loops, the differences between here and reality. Our brains are going to be so mushy when we all get back to our actual bodies."
"Considering you didn't get to interact with anything, I'm not surprised you want to fit in what you can." March was a social butterfly to the highest degree, almost the exact opposite from himself.
Still, he was willing to put in the social effort with her there.
"Why don't we see if we can find Caelus? Wherever he is, it's usually interesting."
"It was awfulllll. They couldn't hear my cute voice or see my cute face." She pouted, looping her arm with his once he started walking with her. "So be prepared, I've got a lot of words to get out now."
"You both got up to so much, like way way more than all of our past adventures combined probably."
He shook his head, putting the book aside. "When we get back to the Express, I'll need to update the databank with everything we know about Amphoreus. But I also didn't want you to wake up alone." He reached up, gently taking her hand. "If you want to go out and explore, I'll go with you."
"Awwww, how sweet of you~" He was so thoughtful, she really did appreciate it right now too. It had been so long since she could speak and people could respond back.
Giving his hand a squeeze, her eyes lit up. "Let's go thennnn. There's a lot I want to see in person now."
