Photo by @medfordtaylor // Cape Henry Lighthouse…..old and ‘new’ during a summer storm. The original lighthouse was built in 1792 of sandstone and it’s replacement on the right is 157 feet tall and built of cast iron and wrought iron, built in 1881. They are located at old Fort Story (now the Navy Joint Expeditionary Base) at the very northern tip of Virginia Beach, VA and designated a National Historic Landmark. The lighthouse is fully automated and still in use as the navigation aid marking the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads. The photograph was made on film before lightning triggers and digital cameras. I was foolishly standing atop a nearby dune and at the instant the shutter was released, the electric current from the lightning strike traveled up the tripod and into my arms. It quickly became a 'one-shot’ event and I retreated to my beach friends home for a double Scotch to settle my rattled nerves. Lesson learned……do not shoot electrical storms from high ground with a metal tripod !! As an additional footnote, this lighthouse is but a few hundred yards from the boyhood home of my ol amigo David Alan Harvey which probably should also be a National Historic Landmark.
