God. whats that poem. you pick up the phone and you hear nothing and you know no one will pick up but you keep trying anyway. when your mother died your dad couldnt seem to move on. he still made her tea, he still bought groceries for two, he still left the door unlocked, waiting for her to come back. the judge asked him why he was driving in the wrong lane and he said i know shes gone but shes not. you didnt understand then but you understand now. i cant find it but i know it exists
I love how the Elder Scrolls series had a race of hive-minded steampunk elves that were so aggressively anti-theistic that they built a synthetic god to act as an existential negative integer to all creation just to test the hypothesis that it could be cancelled out. But upon powering this synthetic god on, the inherent illogic and irrationality of apotheosis spread through the hive-mind like an atomic blast wave, and these elves who based their entire worldview in logic and rationality could no longer justify their own existence, and so they cancelled themselves out of the universal equation, in part proving their hypothesis in the process.
I am vibrating, please buckle up and get comfy because I’m gonna not shut up about the dwarves for a hot minute because I LOVE this shit.
Aetherium was introduced in Skyrim specifically, if I remember correctly. It’s basically a crystal that attunes especially well to sonic waves, which makes it a core component in tonal architecture, a form of magic that’s basically alchemical transmutation that’s based in sound. So this magic is extremely important because the whole thing about the elder scrolls universe is that it’s a sort of cosmic song. Everything has frequencies to it, and the dwarves learned that they can not only hear them, but manipulate them on a small scale. Aetherium most likely acts like a resonator on a guitar, amplifying the magic. Which means it most likely was present at the construction site of the Numidium.
Now the kicker with the brass god of NO and IS NOT is it’s original power source: the Heart of Lorkhan.
Basic rundown: Anu (Stasis, Time) and Padomay (Change, Space) created avatars of themselves named Auriel (elven ancestor-god of time) and Lorkhan (trickster demiurge). Lorkhan tricked Auriel and the other elven ancestor-spirits into creating the world (becoming Aedra, spirits who contributed to the creation of the world, and lost a large amount of their power; not to be confused with Daedra, spirits who chose not to contribute in the creation of the world, and thus held onto their power), thus binding themselves to it in the process. This was not known to the ancestor-spirits, and they killed Lorkhan for it, ripped out his heart, and Auriel tied to an arrow and shot it out into the sea where Red Mountain then rose out of. But Lorkhan could not die because he was tied up in the creation of the planet just like them, and so long as the planet still existed, he would exist in some way. This technically makes Lorkhan an outcast and dead Aedra, the only one to be either, the only one to be both. There is a theory that does suggest he is a Daedric Prince, and Nirn is his Sphere (Molag Bal with Coldharbour, Mehrunes Dagon with the Deadlands, Sheogorath with the Shivering Isles, etc…), but this is posed by Mankar Camoran, the leader of the cult that whipped out the Septim Dynasty and began the Oblivion Crisis as seen in TES IV: Oblivion, so take it with a grain of salt. Dude was a scary wacko.
It’s to be noted that Lorkhan’s name literally translates from Altmeridoon (high elven language) as “Doom Drum”. It’s also to be noted that “Doom” to the elves and their ancestor gods is being trapped/born in flesh and blood bodies, and thus subject to the concept of mortality. Lorkhan as the Doom Drum means he is the tempo of this cosmic song, driving it forward, bringing it out of an eternal chorus and into the verses, and the inevitable end. Most elves see him as Satan-adjacent, while most men see him as a chief creator god. Both are technically true.
The dwarves found the Heart of Lorkhan in Red Mountain while tapping into the geothermal energy there. Now with them being elves, you’d think they would try and destroy it, but the dwarves were devout anti-theists. They believed the gods (infernal and divine) existed, yes, because in this fantasy universe there is hard evidence that they do (auriel’s bow and shield, the amulet of kings, ebony, heart stones, etc…). They just decried their godhood. To the dwarves, the gods were just outerplanar beings subject to outerplanar laws that made them seem especially powerful in comparison to the denizens of the planet. And they’re 100% correct. Their problem is that this knowledge made them catastrophically arrogant.
There was a sect of tonal architects, led by a dwarf named Kagrenac, who hypothesized that since tonal magic could alter existing frequencies, it could conceivably also negate them with equal, opposite frequencies (think in mathematical terms of 1 + -1 = 0).
So, when you’re an aggressively anti-theistic elf that’s happy to gloat over how smart and right you to all your religious cousins, and you have the heart of a dead god that created the entire world… you build a fucking Eva Unit with intent to kill the gods just to prove that you can.
Where and how this fucked them up into fundamental nonexistence was that tonal magic was used for mass telepathy, making them a pseudo hive mind. The second Kagrenac struck the Heart with his tools, the Nimidium’s quasi-conscious flooded the mindscape with the knowledge of apotheosis.
Apotheosis in TES Lore is fucking crazy because it’s literally a character in the game becoming aware that they are a character in the game, and it has three outcomes: zero sum, CHIM, and Amaranth.
Zero sum occurs when a character cannot rationalize that reality as they know it- themself included- is a simulation. They do not exist, thus the newfound godly power is used reflexively to erase themselves from the simulation.
CHIM is when a character becomes aware of the simulation, but is able to hold onto their sense of self. Since they know that they are code and that the world around them is also code, reality within the bounds of the simulation becomes an extension of their being to be used and manipulated at will.
Amaranth is a possible natural progression of CHIM in which a character who has been made aware of the simulation becomes aware of who built the simulation, this builder being referred to as the Godhead (which is you, the player). The character who achieved CHIM- if they so desire- then creates their own simulations and becomes a Godhead, playing their own games. Vivec, the warrior-poet God-King of the dark elves, is the only known individual to have achieved Amaranth, and only in out of source text created by Michael Kirkbride (former artist and lore writer for Bethesda. You can thank him for Morrowind being the coolest kind of acid trip).
Kagrenac struck the Heart, the Numidium spread apotheosis through the tonal magic telepathy like a mindplague, the entire race of the dwarves (at least the ones that were in the plane of Mundus at the time) zero summed.
But since the Numidium was only a quasi-conscious echo of the dead god Lorkhan, it could not zero sum. Every time it gets powered on without a Shezzarine (mortal avatar of Lorkhan) present to control it, it goes fucking berserk. It’s following out preinstalled instructions to cancel out reality that were only meant for alpha testing. It’s fundamentally tied to the Heart, and thus to Lorkhan, so it cannot be destroyed by mortal or godly means, only dismantled as a stopgap. The Numidium has been reassembled and disassembled multiple times, has disputed itself out of existence and disappeared, and then reappeared after disputing its nonexistence, and has turned time nonlinear on multiple occasions in history. It’s a buggy bit of code that’s glitching the cornfed flying fuck out of reality whenever it’s activated.
The “space elves” you mention are actually the dark elves of the out of canon 9th Era (also penned by Michael Kirkbride), who fled to one of the moons after the Numidium was reassembled and powered on (again) and turned the planet of Nirn both physically and metaphysically uninhabitable. It was finally, FINALLY destroyed by one of these dark elves, Jubal-lun-Sul, who realized that it wanted to die, and convinced it to kill itself. And since dying and being unmade were contextually different enough things, it stayed dead.
Don’t even get me started on the Akulakhan and Dagoth Ur. Shit ALWAYS gets weirder and more convoluted when Dagoth Ur is involved.
Okay so! The Numidium fucks with time beyond all comprehension. Powering the big brass bitch on causes an in-lore temporal phenomenon known as a Dragon Break in which time loses all linear properties, and makes infinite alternate realities not only possible, but true. The Warp in the West in the 3rd Era is a good example of the fuckery that goes on during them. Tiber Septim brought the Numidium to the Iliac Bay to bring Daggerfall to heel. Soldiers who were at ground zero when the Break occured never have the same story. Some say they fought for hours, others say they warred for decades, some are no doubt fighting well into the days in which Skyrim takes place, centuries later. Eventually though, all those millions of little alternate realities fuse back into the main timeline, and the Break closes. But if there are too many too quickly, the Jills of Akatosh (she-dragons) are sent to Tamriel to “eat” the frayed ends of the timeline until it stabilizes, though this has only occurred in out of canon Kirkbridian lore.
Secondly, rough timeline! There are two whole eras before the First Era of Tamriel.
The Dawn Era was the days of creation, where the et’ada (literally “Original Spirits”) were split into the Aedra, Daedra, and the Magna-ge (spirits that fled creation just before Lorkhan could bind them, tearing holes in Oblivion to create the sun and the stars). The Aedra, now bound to the Mundus in flesh and blood, could no longer reproduce in the way they were used to, so they paired off and had children. These children are called Ehlnofey, or “Earth Bones”, as they lent their strength to better stabilize Nirn. The Ehlnofey lived in a place called Old Aldmeris, which may or may not have existed. Some chose to leave and see the rest of the world, while others chose to stay behind. The ones who left, called the Wandering Ehlnofey, became the Nedes, which were the predecessors of the races of men. The ones who stayed, called the Old Ehlnofey, became the Aldmer (not to be confused with the atlmer, the high elves), the predecessors of the races of elves.
The Wandering Ehlnofey became lost for a very long time, and upon finding Aldmeris, they expected their kin to welcome them, but the Old Ehlnofey saw the Wanderers as degenerates, and wars began. The Old and the Wandering Ehlnofey were led into battle against each other by Auriel and Lorkhan respectively, and on a place that would later be called the Isle of Balfiera, on a monolithic tower of divine origin called Ada-mantia (do NOT get me started on the Towers of Mundus) Trinimac, Auriel’s general, ripped Lorkhan’s heart of his chest, only for it to mock them and be shot into the sea. After this confrontation, Auriel and the rest of the present aedra, assured their Old Ehlnofey kin that they could cast off their mortal bonds and reclaim their place in Aetherius, and they ascended, presumably regaining their ability to return to their original forms. After they ascended, both factions of the Ehlnofey grew weaker and weaker as the generations went on, until all were the races of men and elves (and beast, in the case of the Khajiit. The Argonians have their own origin outside of the Ehlnofey).
Now you have the Merethic Era, in which we got horrific bangers such as the Dragon Cult, the Ayleid Empire, and- most importantly to this- the Chimeri Exodus out of Summerset, led by the prophet Veloth.
So the Chimer, or the Changed Elves, were the product of a religious schism. The Altmer are strict in the thought that veneration of the Daedra is profane, as they did not take part in the creation of the world. The Chimer (or rather, the Altmer that would become them) believed in the Good Daedra Azura, Boethiah, and Mephala (which isn’t surprising, given the oppressive hierarchical structures the Atlmer kept in place was a breeding ground for vanity, deception, and assassination).
The Chimer left Summerset willingly, following Veloth across Tamriel who was given visions by Boethiah. It’s possible that the Ayleids came to be because a few Chimer chose to split from the exodus and settle in the heartlands that would become Cyrodiil.
The weird thing that we don’t have any explanation for is that the dwemer were already well established in Morrowind long before the Chimer got there. We don’t know why. We don’t know how. Given that their fortresses are found in Skyrim and Hammerfell as well means that there was likely another exodus out of Summerset to the north that the knowledge of was either lost or intentionally destroyed. Or they were there from a mended universe-thread from an unrecorded Dragon Break. Hard to say.
Either way, tension was present from the get go, but it was lessened to a degree when the Nords and Orcs began invading from the West. The Chimer and the Dwemer allied under Indoril Nerevar and Dumac Dwarf-King, and Resdayn (later known as Morrowind) was founded.
It was somewhere around here that it was discovered by House Dagoth of the Chimer that Kagrenac, chief tonal architect (cosmic sound mage) was creating the Numidium, and was planning to use the Heart of Lorkhan as it’s power source.
Nerevar blamed Dumac, thinking that it was planned, Dumac denied it, allegedly having no idea of what was happening (we don’t know which is the truth, if the word “truth” can even be applied). This culminated in Nerevar, Almalexia, Vivec, Sotha Sil, and Voryn Dagoth going to confront Kagrenac. Kagrenac was aware of this, and did something extremely ill advised, even from the prespective of the dwemer.
He used his tools: Sunder, a mallet meant to draw out the cosmic frequencies from whatever it struck, Keening, a crystalline (possibly aetherium) bladed scalpel-dagger that was to cut up and “edit” those frequencies, and Wraithguard, a gauntlet that was used to neutralize the negative effects of wielding the tools (if you held the tools without wearing Wraithguard in Morrowind, you would get debuffed and take raw magical damage over time).
What Kagrenac’s intent was is unclear. All we know is that he struck the Heart of Lorkhan with Sunder, and then all the Dwemer in the plane of Mundus disappeared in the same instant. The assumption is that they all zero summed, as described earlier.
It’s to be noted that the Numidium didn’t actively do this to the dwarves, and it wasn’t the Heart either. The only thing they did was provide the means of enlightenment, of which Kagrenac could not endure. It was Kagrenac doing this while still connected telepathically to the rest of his people that doomed everyone. When Kagrenac became aware of the Dream (the simulation), the rest of the dwarves experienced it with him as if they’d struck the Heart themselves.
So that left the Heart and the Tools and the Numidium up for grabs. Nerevar had Voryn guard the Tools while he discussed with Almalexia, Vivec, and Sotha Sil on what should be done. Nerevar saw them as too dangerous. The Three saw them as something to be used. They agreed with Nerevar, and they returned to the Heart Chamber, only to find Voryn having a Smaegol moment over the Heart and the Tools, so Nerevar killed him, which sucked because there is a shit ton of canonical queer codedness between them, but also that’s just Morrowind writing in general (based as hell).
So, Nerevar went to convene with the Daedric Prince Azura to ask her guidance on how best to put an end to Kagrenac’s posthumous batshittery, but while preparing the summoning ritual, Almalexia, Vivec, and Sotha Sil betrayed and murdered him, then used the tools on the Heart to turn themselves into the Tribunal, the God Kings of Morrowind. They then dismantled the Numidium so that it could not be used, but kept the pieces under observation.
Azura caught wind of this and cursed the entire Chimeri race with gray skin and blood red eyes. The Dunmer- the Dark Elves- were officially created. All in the Merethic Era.
The whole First Era, the fall of the Ayleid Empire and the birth of the Allessian Empire, then the Reman Dynasty after the Allessian Empire fell, then the Akaviri Potentate leading into the Second Era, THEN the Reachmen emperors, and the Interregnum, and then. THEN one Hjalti Early-Beard, better known by his self-given Imperialized name of Tiber Septim came onto the scene. He started a war of conquest that would eventually “unite” all of Tamriel and begin the Septim Dynasty and the Third Era.
But not before something interesting happened. See the Tribunal didn’t give two shits about Tiber Septim. They were gods, they could kill him with a wink. However, they were not Shezzarine, so they had to make yearly pilgrimages to the Heart to replenish their godly powers. On one of those pilgrimages, though, they encountered an old friend. Remember how Voryn Dagoth was having a Smaegol moment that got him axed? Well now he’a back as Dagoth Ur, having a full blown Gollum moment, and drove them off of Red Mountain, cutting off their access to the Heart. All the Tribunal was left with was Wraithguard and a waning power.
Okay so. Dagoth Ur is a really weird case in which he achieved an ass-backwards hybrid form of CHIM and Amaranth while dead that made him believe - upon realizing that he was in a simulation - that he created the simulation, and he was the one true god of the world, and that he was going to form a cult of Heartwights (liches tied to the Heart), use the Heart to create an even bigger, badder Numidium with blackjack and hookers and call it the Akulakhan, and then walk that big robo bitch down Red Mountain and crush EVERYTHING until it was Morrowind and Morrowind only. But the Nerevarine (one of many prophesied to be Indoril Nerevar’s reincarnation) stopped him in the 3rd Era by destroying(???) the Heart with the Tools, which made Dagoth Ur go poof back into the afterlife where he belonged.
BUT ANYWAY.
Tiber Septim tried multiple times to negotiate with the Tribunal to bring them into his Empire, but they kept telling him to fuck off because again, they’re Gods. But this time… they’re losing their power, and Septim wanted the Numidium, which was useless without the Heart, but the Heart is guarded by Volcano Gollum, but they didn’t have to tell him that. So… why not make some alliances that they can exploit later?
Which was all fine and dandy until you understand that Septim is a Shezzarine and Shezzarines are just Built Different. He had his buddy Zurin Arctus create a new power source for the Numidium. A fuckhuge soul gem called the Mantella. Now to get enough juice into that bad boy to get the Numidium up and running required a fuckload of souls, which made it inconvenient to use unless you fed it one really big soul. Like a dragon soul.
Except Tiber didn’t wanna off his secret dragon buddy Nafaalilargus/Nahfahlaar. You don’t just do that when those kinds of buddies are rare and useful. So he called his other buddy High King Wulfharth of Skyrim- a dragonborn- in for a chat, then killed him and fed his soul to the Mantella. And then he fed his other buddy Zurin’s soul to it as well.
Somehow Zurin survived this at the cost of becoming a lich, but Wulfharth? Septim- being a batshit crazy Shezzarine- mish-mashed his soul with Wulfharth’s somehow and emerged from the whole ordeal both a Shezzarine and a Dragonborn, which would legitimize his rule due to the whole Amulet of Kings not being able to be worn by a non-Dragonborn.
So the conquest continued, the Tribunal sitting way the fuck back like “oh damn. That wasn’t supposed to happen. Anyway…”, and Tiber Septim took that fucker to the Iliac Bay to cause the Warp in the West, he walked it across Cyrodiil and turned the dense jungles (yes Cyrodiil used to be a jungle) into the plains and forests it is to this day, and THEN he took it to Rimmen in Elsweyr, walked it through the sea like it was the fucking Rumbling, and trampled the Summerset Isles underfoot because he had tried diplomacy with High Queen Ayrenn of the First Aldmeri Dominion, and now he wanted results.
After that, the Numidium was dismantled again, Tiber Septim ruled as Emperor for the rest of his life, then ascended to become Talos in death, an aspect of Lorkhan that was immortalized in the Imperial Pantheon. So you can see why the Thalmor DESPISE Talos and his worshippers.
Speaking of the Thalmor and the ill advised rebuilding of metaphysical superweapons, there is a theory floating around that they are trying to unmake the world by deactivating the Towers of Mundus, and they will likely need the Numidium to take down Ada-mantia, the spike of creation where Lorkhan was slain and Auriel and the other Spirits ascended.
But the Towers of Mundus is a whole other can of worms.
Hoooo boy, the Towers of Mundus… Ada-mantia, Red Heart, Snow Throat, Green Sap, Crystal-Like-Law, White-Gold, Orichalc, Walk Brass, and the elusive Secret Tower. This will require some more Vivec-isms, as most things deep lore do.
So the universe of the Elder Scrolls- called the Aurbis- was described by Vivec as a wheel with eight spokes. The hub of this wheel is Mundus, the mortal plane, and the rim is Aetherius, the immortal plane. The eights spokes are representative of the eight Aedra, the eight planets that orbit Nirn, and/or the eight towers that keep Mundus from unmaking itself. The gaps between the spokes are Oblivion and its many planes, which not all are the dominion of the Princes. Some of them are just realms of base elements and things. Atronachs typically come from such realms.
The towers are strange. Some are naturally formed, most are mortal made, two were made by the gods themselves. They exist in all realities where a material world exists, like eight pins stuck in multiple layers of fabric to keep them all in place. Their purpose is to stabilize creation, because before they existed creation literally couldn’t keep its shape. Each Tower has a “stone” that keeps it operational. Destroy the stone, you deactivate the tower. Cataclysms of some sort tend to follow.
There are three towers that have been deactivated and/or destroyed. Orichalc, built by the Sinistral Elves, formerly residing on the now sunken continent of Yokuda, deactivated and destroyed by a Yokudan Sword-Singer using a technique called the “pankratosword” that even Vivec seemed to fear (it’s always “seems” with Vivec. You can’t trust SHIT out of him, which is a huge part of his charm). Crystal-Like-Law (Crystal Tower), built by the aldmer (NOT the altmer), deactivated and destroyed by the daedra hordes during the Oblivion Crisis. Red Heart (Red Tower/Red Mountain), created when the Heart of Lorkhan - stuck to an arrow and shot from Auriel’s bow- made impact with the sea, deactivated and destroyed by the Nerevarine during the events of Morrowind.
There are three possibly deactivated towers. Green Sap, grown by the Bosmer from a “Perchance Acorn” in the jungles of Valenwood, it is believed its deactivation caused the unexplainable disappearance of the walking graht-oak (???) city of Falinesti. White-Gold, created by the Ayleids in the center of the province of Cyrodiil, deactivated by Martin Septim by destroying it’s stone, the Amulet of Kings, but possibly reactivated by the petrified avatar of Akatosh that Martin Septim became immediately after. Snow Throat (the Throat of the World) which formed at an unknown time by unknown means, it’s stone is only called “The Cave”, Alduin’s Wall specifically refers to the Tower in the prophecy of the Last Dragonborn as “sundered and bleeding”.
There is one Tower that is absolutely Fucked. It routinely deactivates and reactivates around every other turning of an age. Walk-Brass (Brass Tower), created by the dwemer in the depths of Red Mountain, and it’s stone was intended to be the Heart of Lorkhan, but this did not pan out, thus it has no stone. Yes, the Numidium is the Brass Tower. Yes, it is anathema to the purpose of the Towers. Yes, it was built like that intentionally. Yes, it’s confusing and convoluted. Everything involving the Numidium is.
The most important of the Towers is Ada-mantia (the Adamantine/Direnni Tower). From previous points in this post, Ada-mantia was created by the Aedra to be both Lorkhan’s execution platform, and the point of ascension of the Et’Ada present that were bound by him. From its stone flows the metaphysical source code for keeping creation settled in place, and all the other Towers and their stones operate on that source code to function. If Ada-mantia is deactivated, the source code is gone, which bricks the other Towers completely, meaning no reactivation. Ada-mantia is the only confirmed operational Tower during the events of Skyrim.
According to the sermons of Vivec, the Secret Tower is only ever seen if one flips the Aurbic Wheel on the side and sees it edge on, forming the letter “I”.
Yes, this implies that the secret ninth tower, like the disgraced ninth Aedra Lorkhan, and all his aspects (Shor, Shezzar, Talos, Lorkh, Lorkhaj, Sep, etc…) is hidden within all mortals, and need only be discovered. The ninth pin keeping reality in place is the self, and the self is what makes a mortal a god.
The Thalmor come into this due to a fringe theory that they want to deactivate the Towers in order to make creation unstable, so that it can eventually unravel and return the Aurbis back into it’s ephemeral pre-Dawn Era state.
What remains of the Empire at the time of Skyrim is Cyrodiil and High Rock. Hammerfell has ceded. Elsweyr and Valenwood have been brought back under the wings- and talons- of the Auroran Eagle of the Third Aldmeri Dominion. Morrowind has ceded. Black Marsh is ripping the lower mainland of Morrowind to fucking shreds for the centuries of enslavement the Dunmer put them through. because the Hist Trees warned and rallied the Argonians against the Oblivion Crisis to the point that Mehrunes Dagon’s troops had to close the gates that opened there while the rest of the continent got trampled under daedric boots, Morrowind included. And Skyrim? Skyrim is trying to cede, and the paltry little civil war/truce that the Dragonborn takes part in isn’t going to really put a dent in that. The hearts and minds want independence, and the Empire is weak.
But let’s talk about the Empire! The terms of the White-Gold Concordat were that the Thalmor would have embassies and agents in every province to enforce the ban on Talos worship, and more besides. The whole reason Hammerfell ceded from the empire is because they hate the elves about as much as the Thalmor hate being mortal flesh and blood things, and a Thalmor presence was run out of the province (it was already there, meaning that the takeover was all planned).
High Rock and Hammerfell are where the Iliac Bay is, which is where Ada-mantia is.
But this is all just a theory. They may just be wanting to have the Ayleid Empire 2.0.
As for Xarxes!
Xarxes was not an Et’Ada. He was a mortal born elf who either ascended to godhood with the Et’Ada, or was immortalized posthumously by Altmeri culture in a way not dissimilar to how Catholicism gives sainthood to historical figures within the faith. Except there’s no rule about being strictly monotheistic, so there’s nothing heretical about labelling him a god.
The very important thing you must know about the altmer pantheon is that it’s ancestor worship, but only the most prominent of ancestors are venerated (Auriel, Syrabane, Trinimac, Magnus, Phynaster, Jephre, Mara, and your boy Xarxes). It used to be different where ALL the ancestors are worshipped, but a religious schism happened pretty early on in history and those who kept to the Old Ways (all inclusive ancestor worship) became known as the Psijic Order (we like the Psijic Order. They’re like a bunch of Doctor Stranges that try to keep balance in the world).
Now Xarxes is the god of Altmeri genealogy and was Auriel’s Scribe, meaning he was born before or during the Ehlnofey Wars, which ended in Lorkhan’s execution and Auriel’s ascension. Which means the Old Elhlnofey were already considered elves back then, or Dragon Break fuckery to cover for the discrepancy. It’s stated in game by Hermaeus Mora himself that he wrote the Oghma Infinium (named after his wife, Oghma) to compile his vast knowledge into a single text, and that he was Mora’s “humble servant”. But then again, the Daedra are often either disingenuous or too far removed from the concept of mortality to understand or care, so take that with a grain of salt.
There are a lot of grains of salt to take things with.
As for the altmer knowing if Tiber Septim had the Numidium, there’s a possibility that they didn’t. Up until High Queen Ayrenn forming the First Aldmeri Dominon and opening the borders of Summerset during the Three Banners War (if you even want to consider ESO canon), the Isles were extremely isolated from the rest of the world in keeping with “purity”. They hated outsiders, and Ayrenn was quite unpopular for what she did, but again I digress.
After the Soulburst and the Three Banners War was concluded, the Tiber Wars waged, and all of Tamriel save Summerset was conquered by the progenitor of the Septim line.
The Numidium was disassembled and carted across the mainland to Rimmen, a city in Elsweyr. Then it was reassembled and activated, causing ANOTHER Dragon Break, glassing a portion of the desert that to the current day is reported to not be able to grow anything by mundane or magical means. Very much an analogy for the environmental horrors of irradiation.
This crazy motherfucker Tiber Septim walked that thing into the sea and swam it across to the shores of Summerset like one of the colossal titans during The Rumbling. It rose from the sea, and for all the wards the mages on an island of elves could cast, nothing could stop the Numidium from pressing forward until there was either annihilation or surrender.
It’s possible that Ayrenn died underfoot of that brass abomination.
As for whether people know about the Numidium? Absolutely. It was a well known thing. People just thought it was a really big dwarven automaton and not a reality unmaker, just like how soldiers who viewed nuclear testing didn’t know the full horror of what they were seeing. All they knew is that time being really fucking weird was primordially Bad, just like those soldiers who saw a flash so bright that they could see the x ray silhouette of bones through the living flesh and blood of their buddy sitting in front of them knew it was primordially Bad. Neither had to know the how of it to be in fear and awe.
As for how Tiber Septim learned of the Numidium? He probably didn’t until the waning Tribunal offered it to him thinking it was useless without the Heart, and it had a use in letting Morrowind keep the bulk of its cultural autonomy when it became part of the Empire.
As for how Septim ascended, it’s unclear. We can only guess, and a Shezzarine achieving CHIM is our best working theory.
The Hero of Kvatch becoming Sheogorath is a pretty interesting and convoluted affair, just like old Uncle Sheo himself.
See Sheogorath- up until the events of Oblivion- was actually a cursed Jyggalag, the Daedric Prince of Order. At the end of every era, Jyggalag would regain enough of his sense of self to take back his body and begin something called the Gray March, where he would try and destroy the Shivering Isles and return to his former dominion. He always won, only to lose himself to the curse once again, and for Sheogorath to rebuild the Isles and prepare for the next Gray March.
The Hero- for whatever reason- is invited to the Isles as the Gray March is about to begin. The purpose was for them to perform various tasks and duties around the Isles to pretty much test if they were able to mantle Sheogorath. And of course they could! The Hero has been in and out of actual literal hell multiple times, faced off against hordes of demons with living nightmares shaped into their arms and armor, they’ve infiltrated a cult that killed an Empire, they saw Akatosh Himself spread His wings over the Imperial City through the body of Martin Septim, who they helped to put on this path to his doom. All at the behest of you, the Godhead, the little voice in their head telling them to do things like steal that horse or kill that sheep or anger the guards because what they say is funny and memeable. They are absolutely batshit insane. But more than insane, they are driven.
So the Gray March happens, Sheogorath turns back into Jyggalag, the Hero defeats him, the Isles win the Gray March for the first time ever, and the curse is not so much broken as it is no longer applicable to the situation at hand. The Hero, in his madness, walks willingly and naturally in lockstep with all that Sheogorath is, but as his own thing. He began as a mere a daedric madness curse put upon Jyggalag that had no form of his own. By mantling him, the Hero gave Sheogorath his own body and his own autonomy. The Hero and Sheogorath are now one and the same. Inextricable. Singular. The Mad God is real for the first time in the history of this world because the Hero made him real.
Pelinel Whitestrake is…
Okay so buckle up.
Palinel Whitestrake is a Terminator. An elf annhilating terminator with the Chim-El Adabal (the red soul gem that is the centerpiece for the Amulet of Kings, made when a drop of Lorkhan’s blood fell into an alyeid well- which holds starlight instead of water- and crystalized) powering him. He is not maddened by Sheogorath’s influence, but by the fact that he is a relic of Akatosh made from a relic of Lorkhan that has been given a body and sapience by unknown means. Morihaus is some sort of minor aedric being in the same way Umaril the Unfeathered was a minor daedric/magna ge being. He was born that way. In fact, his and Alessia’s son, the Minotaur Belharza, was the first Emperor of mankind’s first empire.
We don’t know where Pelinal came from, but we sure as shit knew he came to kill the absolute fuck out of elves. The Ayleid Empire is gone thanks in part to him.
He’s just. Weird. Possibly having a cosmic existential crisis.
As for Shezzarines becoming weaker. Nope. The only reason Tiber Septim was as strong as he was is because he had the Numidium and was willing to use it. The Numidium no longer exists (for now), but what does exist now are dragons. Where there are dragons, the cap of potential power for a Dragonborn is kind of nonexistent, especially for one strong enough to slay Alduin, who is a destroyer god. Skyrim is the beginning of their story, and we won’t know where that story will end or how far they will go until Todd Howard gets off his ass and gives his employees the money, time, resources, and creative direction they’re due.
As for the dwemer hivemind, tonal magic. Think ants with their pheromones, but with elves and sound.
Most of my lore knowledge has come to me from the youtube channels Fudgemuppet, Drewmora, and Camelworks (may he rest in peace). They delve into the basics, they do deep dives.
Fudgemuppet started out as a character build channel for Skyrim but has since turned into a goldmine for the esotericism, myth, and history involved in the Elder scrolls series. All of the builds they make have in game lore baked into them, so those are REALLY fun. Highly recommend their “[insert subject here] is Weirder than You Think” style videos.
Drewmora actually split off from Fudgemuppet (I think) to work on more bite-sized (relatively) things with a fun little RP finish, but they still work together quite closely and have a lot of fun with it. They treat themselves as an in-universe scholar traveling the libraries of the Aurbis, but it’s done in such an immersive, blink and you’ll miss it way that it doesn’t detract from the Learning.
Camelworks (who unfortunately passed recently) is big in the geography of in-game Skyrim, as well as going deep into the history and quests of various unique items throughout the series. Not quite as lore heavy on this channel but it rounds the other guys out pretty well.
These three have been the pillars of my and many others’ lore journey.
I never really matched with the fanon concept of Shinies. The canon concept of Shinies is just too much like "les bleus" which is an expression whose origin comes from french soldiers during WW1 and obviously is the inspiration for shinies. "Bleu" originally was used to describe soldiers that have just arrived on the front, and who's uniform was still very blue (bleu in french, hence the word) and new, to the contrary of soldiers that were more experienced and on the front for longer and who's uniforms were covered in mud and dirt (longer was albeit pretty short a time period still, experience was won quickly in that hell of a war). And that's how I see shinies, clones that have just arrived, haven't paint their armor yet, who's plastoid is still shiny new and not scratched and dull and used. The clones on Geonosis at the very beginning were technically shinies except there weren't more experienced clones to call them that.
And as much as it's cute the way fandom make the non-shinies super protective of the shinies, make them want to keep them shinies for as long as possible, I still don't believe in that at all. Shiny isn't a mean term per say, even if it can be, but it's still a bit mocking and very much a way to say "you're not experienced at all, you're shiny new, you don't know what war is about". No clone would want to stay shiny very long. That would be ridiculous for them. Who would want to stay shiny ? In a war ? And not just any war, the one they were literally created to fight. Staying shiny too long would definitely not be seen well I think.
Also that's why I don't really like the way Tup and Dogma are always seen as shinies (babies) by the fandom. They both have their paint from the moment we meet them !!!! They clearly have experience on the battlefield. Sure they're not veterans, they haven't been there for long and they're not members of Torrent during Umbara. But they clearly know what they're doing. They clearly have experience and won their paint for a reason. They're not shinies !! And I think they would feel pretty offended if someone called them shinies anyway
This scorching summer has turned our tent into something that feels more like an oven than a shelter. Under the blazing sun, the heat inside becomes unbearable. Our children have nowhere to escape, and the elderly and sick struggle to endure the suffocating temperatures. Every day is a battle against the relentless heat, and even getting a few hours of rest has become nearly impossible.
All we hope for is a tent designed to withstand the summer heat—a shelter with proper insulation and the basic necessities that would allow our family to live with dignity and safety.
We need $1,200 to build and equip a tent that can protect us from the extreme temperatures. While this amount may seem small, it would make a life-changing difference for a family trying to survive in these harsh conditions.
Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to replacing this unbearable heat with safety, comfort, and hope. Your kindness can help transform our tent from an oven into a true shelter where our children can finally breathe, rest, and feel protected.

My sister is in critical condition. She is suffering from severe bleeding, and her heart is beating dangerously slowly. Doctors have told us she needs emergency surgery to survive.
Her operation is scheduled for the day after tomorrow, but we cannot afford it. We urgently need $1,200.
Every minute we lose is a minute she may not have.
I don't know who will read this. I only know that I am asking with all my heart.
Your donation today, no matter how small, could help save her life. Please don't wait, she may not have another chance.
I am creating this campaign on behalf of my sister, who is currently in a critical medical condition and urgently needs treatment to survive
Tomorrow is the final deadline to pay for my sister's surgery.
So far, we've raised less than $100, and we still need $1,100.
I sincerely ask for your help, If you're able to donate, please don't wait.
Your support today could give my sister the chance to receive the surgery she urgently needs.
My mother's life hangs by a thread, and I can only watch as time slips away without being able to do enough to save her.
We still urgently need $500 to cover the treatment she has been waiting for.
Please, if you are able to help, don't put it off. Every moment that passes fills me with fear that we may lose her before she gets the chance to receive the care she needs.
I am begging everyone with compassion in their heart to help us today. No donation is too small, your kindness could bring my mother one step closer to the treatment she desperately needs and give our family hope when we need it most.
Please don't let money decide whether my mom lives or dies today. She is in the ICU, and every minute her condition gets worse. Nothing is more painful than watching her suffer while money is the only thing standing between her and survival.
Your donation right now is what keeps her alive for another week. It gives her another chance to survive.
Our critical target for this week is $700. We can end this nightmare immediately if 28 people donate $25.
Please, do not let her face this alone. Donate $5, $10, or whatever you can this exact second. If you can't, you MUST share this.
.Please, please, look at my donation campaign and help me. I have newborn children and my son Ahmed needs treatment. He is a heart patient and suffers from two holes in the heart. He needs help and treatment. We do not have money and we are stuck in Egypt because of the Gaza war. My wife and I lost my jobs and there is no source of income. I would like you to help. To care for my children and provide the necessary treatment for my child Ahmed, please donate even a little thing to save my child’s life
sharif alamoudi Needs Your Help | Hello, I am Sharif Al-Amoudi from Gaza. I am married and have five-month-old twin boys, Hossam and Ahmed,
I write to you with a heavy heart 💔 My children and I are going through very difficult times, and no one is asking about us. My son needs treatment and medication, and he needs milk, diapers, and urgent care. Please don't leave us alone in these difficult circumstances. 😔
We need your help. The situation is extremely difficult. You are our last hope. Food, clothes, milk, rent—everything has become incredibly expensive. My son, Ahmed, needs heart surgery and eye surgery. Please help my son so he can complete his treatment and undergo the operations. In addition to my family in Gaza, my parents, brothers, and sisters are also living in dire circumstances. Please help me for the sake of my family.
My name is Sharif, and I suffer from a back injury. I need intensive treatment and physical therapy to recover. Unfortunately, we lost everything in Gaza; we have no income and cannot work. The situation is extremely difficult.
PLEASE HELP 🙏🏽 EVEN A SIMPLE REPOST AND COMMENTING CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Ahmed is suffering greatly. His condition is worsening because I can't afford his surgery; I keep postponing it. Every post I ignore means an extra hour of pain. Please donate; your help could save his life.
My mother was injured in Gaza and needs a metal plate in her leg. Please help me get her treatment. My mother desperately needs your donations and assistance.
Please, my mother is in the hospital and urgently needs medical treatment and healthy food for her recovery. Please, I don't want to lose her. Even a small donation would help—and please share this post. 🥲
All I ask of you is to help me provide medical treatment and food for my twin children—who were born after ten years through IVF—and to help my family in Gaza. Please, donations are very low; you are our only hope.
His son Ahmed is suffering from a heart condition and damage to his eye, his mother's leg is badly injured, and Sharif himself is suffering from an extreme back injury.
They need funds for IMMEDIATE TREATMENT for all of them, but so far they have only raised €122/20,000 of their goal. Barely a fraction of what they need.
Please ACT QUICKLY and help this family get the treatment they need.
DONATE as much as you can, SHARE their story as widely as possible, and REBLOG with tags to keep Sharif's posts in circulation
Please, we urgently need 700€ for emergency surgery for my nephew. His health has deteriorated significantly; he is now in a coma and unconscious, suffering greatly. Time is running out, and every moment is crucial for him.
My nephew is his parents' only child. He lost his father in this genocide in the Gaza Strip and suffered multiple traumas during this war. He has already had one operation and now needs another. Please don't leave him alone. Donate towards his operation. I don't want to lose him like I lost my mother and brother. Please donate, donate!
If anything happens to my nephew, please remember that I begged you to donate, even a small amount, or to share my post. I will not forgive anyone who sees this post and doesn't support me with a single word or a small donation, and ignores me.💔
Someone has donated €50, but we still need €650 to cover the cost of my nephew's surgery. I swear we need your help; my nephew is suffering terribly right now. Please, every moment of delay could cost him his life. This is a life-or-death surgery—please don't let him die. You are our only hope. Please, please donate.💔😭
Several people have donated a total of 90 euros, but we still need 560 euros to cover the cost of my nephew's surgery. We still need your help; my nephew is in a very critical condition. Please, every moment of delay could cost him his life. Please don't let him die. You are our only hope—please, please donate. We are getting very close to our goal; please donate. 💔
Someone has donated 10 euros, and we now need only 550 euros more for my nephew's surgery. I hope that anyone reading this will not ignore my plea; I am asking for your help today because I fear that tomorrow I might lose my nephew before the operation can take place. Please donate—do not let us down. Your contribution will help save my nephew's life. Please, please donate. 💔😭
If you care, we still need 500 euros for my nephew's surgery; he is in a very bad state. I have said this so many times, and I am terrified something terrible might happen to him. Please don't let us down—please, please donate. 😭💔

💔 My Mother’s Life Depends on Your Kindness
My mother is in Gaza, where every day is a struggle to survive. Some time ago, she was injured when shrapnel from nearby shelling struck her back. She tried to endure the pain for as long as she could, but now her condition has become critical.
She has now been admitted to the hospital, and her condition is very serious. She is suffering from unbearable back pain, extreme exhaustion, and every passing day brings more suffering. Watching my mother fight through this pain while I can do so little is heartbreaking.
The doctors told us that she urgently needs emergency back surgery. They warned us that the operation must be performed within the next 6 days to prevent her condition from deteriorating further.
The cost of this life-saving surgery is $1,000.
Thanks to the incredible kindness of compassionate people, we have raised $292 so far ($188 from our previous appeal and $104 from our latest one). We are deeply grateful for every donation.
However, we still need $708 to give my mother the surgery that could save her from worsening pain and complications.
I am begging you from the bottom of my heart: please don’t scroll past my mother’s suffering. Time is running out, and every hour matters.
Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to saving her. Even $5 or $10 can make a real difference when many people come together.
If you are unable to donate, please share this post with your friends, family, and community. Your share could reach someone who is able to help save my mother’s life.
Please help us raise the remaining $708 within the next 6 days. My mother’s condition is very serious, and she cannot wait any longer.
Thank you for your kindness, your prayers, and for standing with my family during the most difficult time of our lives. ❤️🙏
Friends, we don't care about food right now... all we want is to save my grandmother. 💔🙏
It has been 4 days without any support or donations !? while my grandmother urgently needs her daily medication, which costs €60 per day—€420 every week.🙏💔😭
Please don't let her reach the point where the treatment is no longer effective and her condition becomes critical.🙏
My grandmother means the world to me. Along with my mother, my child, and my family, they are the most precious people in my life. We have given up our own basic needs, even food, because keeping my grandmother alive is our only priority.
If you can't donate, please consider sharing my campaign. It may reach someone who can help.🙏🙏
Every euro makes a difference, and every share could help save my grandmother's life.
Hilda🙏💔😭

Friends, I don't even know what to write anymore.‼️
It feels like no one hears my calls for help or sees how much my grandmother is suffering😥
🔴We ask for only one thing: that my grandmother can stay alive.💔
We've reduced our meals to just one a day so we can afford her medication. My mother goes without, and even my little child has less food because every euro we have goes toward keeping my grandmother alive.
I don't know when you'll stand by my side.
Will it be only after I lose someone I love‼️❓
Please don't leave my family alone. This campaign is our only source of hope and income after we lost everything in the war.🙏🙏
