Skipping Stones
Under my feet are jagged rocks. My heels bleed as I hop from one to another, numb to this pain I have always felt. Every once in a while, my eyes light up as they are caught by a smoother stone. I turn to the water. I let the stone go. Just like that, it's gone. Some stones bounce on the fragile surface, their graceful dance seems to last forever. Yet others sink. Immediately. It's as if they never stood a chance. Maybe it's because I do not choose carefully which pebbles I send flying. I simply give them a once-over: are they smooth? Ish? Are they flat? Ish? If the answer is yes, I toss and I pray, hoping this one will work.
This task I have taken on is not an easy one. It mangles my feet and strains my eyes. Even the curve of my spine has been twisted by days spent hunched over the bank. Still I go on, searching for stones because I know what they are worth. Each time a stone skips my heart bounces with it as I forget my troubles for a moment. To see my rocks hop, makes me wish for more, and thus the cycle continues. Next time you find yourself on a river bank, take a moment to yourself to remember my tale. Let your feet sink into the stony beach, get lost on the rocky shores. When you finally find your stone, one so flat and so smooth, let it go and watch the dance. As it twirls about, think to yourself, “really, was that so hard?”
Furious, she decided to hurt - or worse. “I wouldn’t be smiling,” said she, then strode past.
“Throne of Glass” ~Sarah J. Maas (2012)
Writing advice from my uni teachers:
If your dialog feels flat, rewrite the scene pretending the characters cannot at any cost say exactly what they mean. No one says “I’m mad” but they can say it in 100 other ways.
Wrote a chapter but you dislike it? Rewrite it again from memory. That way you’re only remembering the main parts and can fill in extra details. My teacher who was a playwright literally writes every single script twice because of this.
Don’t overuse metaphors, or they lose their potency. Limit yourself.
Before you write your novel, write a page of anything from your characters POV so you can get their voice right. Do this for every main character introduced.
