Nobody who has seen this has ever forgotten about it.
“The Sacrifice of Polyxena”, 17th century Chinese tapestry, part of a series llustrating the story of the Trojan War, made for sale to the Portuguese market. More than a bit chaotic when reduced to internet size, no doubt far more effective in person.
From the Met:
From 1557, the Portuguese contracted with the Ming rulers of China to buy control of Macau, a coastal peninsula near Hong Kong. Sailing between Asia and Iberia, trade enabled an abundance of spices, but also of textiles, to enter Europe. This heady moment of mutual discovery provides the context for Francisco Mascarenhas, governor of Macau, to commission this unusual hanging. The scale and conventions of Flemish tapestry are translated into Chinese embroidery. Familiar European subject matter, loosely based on Homer’s Iliad and informed by printed sources, is marvelously charged with Asian decorative details– such as the shields hanging from the Trojan galley– and a Portuguese border articulated by snake-battling sirens and (slightly erroneous) renditions of the Mascarenhas family arms. At some point in the hanging's history, the embroidered silk in all the flesh areas was cut away and replaced with paint for reasons that remain unclear.

i hate that social media apps have decided it's their job to scroll for you and autoplay the next video in a desperate attempt to get you to stay. like genuinely nothing you do will make me stay and watch that video after you force it onto the screen in front of me. the minute you auto scroll from what i was watching to your stupid distraction technique, i close the app and you fail. fuck you
ugh. on the one hand tumblr introducing age verification for people in countries where thats come into law recently was probably inevitable and outside of their control. on the other hand the fact tumblr is so bad at identifying mature posts IS within their control and it really adds insult to injury. like idc if its a faulty algorithm or malicious user reports or shitty admins, at least when bluesky asks for my ID its because i clicked on a post with sex in it. the last mature marked post i saw on tumblr was a photo of megan thee stallion in cosplay. dont piss me off.

god last night after a longass day i got to my campsite too late to buy firewood anywhere so i had to go into the woods to chop some deadwood myself but then i somehow didn't have my headlamp so after i had my armful of wood i was carrying my flashlight in my mouth and by the time i had the fire going and cooked dinner and got to bed i was too tired to move. i didn't even set up a tent i just got into my sleeping back in the dark and then i woke up an hour later to Little Bird bristling and growling like there were a lion upon us and as i rose out of my haze i heard the telltale "meep" of an american woodcock. truly we were under siege.
little bird said quickly! we are under attack!
