Whumperless Whump Event - Day 1
Like a Baby Seal to Water: Fishtailing / Near drowning / "I thought I was going to die."
Author comment:
I hope I will get in some prompts this year, but time is a hard constrain and there is a very special fic waiting for me, that is a priority. It is my first time to participate in such an event.
As you will see english is not my first language, but I really need to practice writing english again, so if you want to help me get better, feel free to point out some mistakes :D
I think my mutuals can imagine which persons I had in mind while writing ;)
Youngest was so excited. It was the first time Leader took him outside without the others there. Like it was their first special mission together and he loved to have Leaders attention to himself.
He didn't know the mission right now, but over the last months he learnt to trust Leader without asking any questions. And in this case he only knew that Leader wanted to show him something.
So he followed him up a steep hill already hearing the sea that must be on the other side of it. Reaching the top Leader stopped abruptly and Youngest ran against his arm, which Leader had reached out with to stop him.
Youngest looked down the cliff directly into the sea. He wondered if he would have fallen down there if not for Leaders arm. The sea was calm, yeah, the waves where moving, but it looked kind of serene down there.
As Youngest was still busy looking down, Leader spoke: âYou learnt a lot in these past months and your instincts serve you very well.â
Youngest could not believe his ears as praise from leader was nearly never heard. He looked at his mentor and his face started beaming at the words like a flower in sunshine. At the same time Leader spoke further: âBut nevertheless there are still things you have to learn by heart before you are allowed on more dangerous missions.â
Youngest knew that and nodded, his mood not tainted. He wanted to show Leader that he was worthy of his attention and his training more than anything. Without Leader he would still be lost and alone.
Lost in his thoughts he never saw the blow coming. Leader struck his shoulder so hard, that he toppled over the edge of the cliff. His arms flailing, he could not get a hold on anything. Just his eyes got a hold of Leaders and their eyes made contact.
The shock must have been written on his face, his eyes blown open. Youngest would have trusted leader with his life. Look where trust has gotten him again. Even while falling - the betrayal he was feeling burnt through his core.
His fall was stopped abruptly as he hit the surprisingly hard water surface and the air was pressed out of his lungs. That water was extremely cold. Youngest never had the privilege to learn how to swim. Yes in most cases he could hold his own up, but with this start, he did simply panic.
He didnât know which way was up, he tried to swim, but couldnât, and his lungs screamed. The urged to breathe was getting not controllable and dark spots appeared in his vision. He couldnât believe he would die because he made the error of trusting again. That was his last thought as his vision did go black and he knew no more.
Leader stood on top of the cliff and he knew he made a grave mistake as soon as he watched the wide blown eyes of Youngest and the betrayal he could read in them. He just wanted to test his best pupil further, tests in different biomes where standard protocol.
And he had just wanted to see how Youngest reacted to the fall in the cold water. He even made sure beforehand that the fall was safe, that no rocks where below the surface. But he forgot Youngests past; there was so much he still did not know. He saw how betrayed Youngest felt and swore to himself to make it up to him.
But as he watched Youngest dive deep into the water, he waited in vain that he got back up. And it was then he realised he made an even greater error in assuming that of course the fourteen year old he trained, had learned how to swim.
Instantly Leader took of his boots and jacket and dove right down the cliff. Thank god, the water was clear in this part, so he spotted Youngest drifting below him in the water. But his heart contracted painfully as he saw that there was no movement.
Quickly he reached the boy and pulled him to the surface. Making sure Youngests head stayed above the water he swam straight for the shore, dragging him first through the waves and afterwards up the beach.
Gently Leader laid Youngest on the beach. He put his ear to Youngests mouth, but as much as he wished he could not hear him breathing. Afterwards he put his fingers on the neck to feel for a pulse, just to feel it slow and faint. Relieve flooded him. He wasnât too late.
Putting his mouth on top of Youngest to force some air into his lungs he prayed that there was still time. Luckily he didnât have to repeat his more than two time, before Youngest began to cough badly.
As fast as he could Leader rolled him onto his side, so he could bring up the water he ingested. Leaders hand stayed on Youngest back, making soothing circles, while he whispered: âYou are doing great, get it all out.â
Youngest coughed and sputtered out more water. After he had no more to give he just laid there, his breathing still sounded painful to Leaders ears. Nevertheless Youngest tried to say something, but leader had to lean down, to hear the painful whisper: âL-Leader? IâŠthought⊠I câd trust yâŠâ
The words melted together, but Leader still got the meaning. And the otherwise stoic leader felt his eyes getting wet. Remorse flooded his veins, as he watched Youngest loose awareness once more. Quickly he checked his breathing and pulse again and was relieved to find both to be there.
âI am so sorry, my boy, so sorry!â he spoke to the unconscious Youngest, while he gently brushed Youngests wet hair out of his face.
