New fabric uses sun and wind to power devices
Fabrics that can generate electricity from physical movement have been in the works for a few years. Now researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology have taken the next step, developing a fabric that can simultaneously harvest energy from both sunshine and motion.
Combining two types of electricity generation into one textile paves the way for developing garments that could provide their own source of energy to power devices such as smart phones or global positioning systems.
âThis hybrid power textile presents a novel solution to charging devices in the field from something as simple as the wind blowing on a sunny day,â said Zhong Lin Wang, a Regents professor in the Georgia Tech School of Materials Science and Engineering.
The research was reported September 12 in Nature Energy.

I should have posted these much sooner when I first found them, but here are they are now startorialists - plus-size galaxy clothing FTW!
Gwynnie Bee is an online womenâs clothing subscription service for sizes 10-32, but there is also a Gwynnie Bee Shop that anyone can access.Â
Of these three offerings, only the galaxy wrap dress is still available, but I highly recommend checking them out in the hopes that there is more startorial things to come!

DuoSkin
Project from MIT Media Lab and Microsoft Research explores how anyone can create stylish temporary tattoos with tech functionality:
DuoSkin is a fabrication process that enables anyone to create customized functional devices that can be attached directly on their skin. Using gold metal leaf, a material that is cheap, skin-friendly, and robust for everyday wear, we demonstrate three types of on-skin interfaces: sensing touch input, displaying output, and wireless communication. DuoSkin draws from the aesthetics found in metallic jewelry-like temporary tattoos to create on-skin devices which resemble jewelry. DuoSkin devices enable users to control their mobile devices, display information, and store information on their skin while serving as a statement of personal style. We believe that in the future, on-skin electronics will no longer be black-boxed and mystified; instead, they will converge towards the user friendliness, extensibility, and aesthetics of body decorations, forming a DuoSkin integrated to the extent that it has seemingly disappeared.Â

OMG, the LIGO dress now real!!! <Einstein swoon>Â
TBT to whenHolly Renee (aka @shenovafashion) first tweeted her concept for this dress the day after the announcement of the first detected signal of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) on February 11, 2016. And she didnât waste any time making it a reality!Â
This gravitational waves dress features the two separate signals from the two LIGO detectors in Livingston, Louisiana and Hanford, Washington. Holly weaved them together like a brilliant mathematical twist on vintage Chanel.Â
The dress is available on her website. And while youâre there, be sure to check out her other fabulous designs that weâve featured here before like Emilyâs Jupiter/Brown dwarf dress and the Fibonacci dress as modeled by Emily Lakdawalla.

A dress that thinks
Imagine if your clothes could represent what the world thinks. Fashion brand Marchesa did. And with cognitive computing they made this dream a reality. The couture designer worked with IBM Watson to create a cognitive dress for this yearâs Met Gala. Itâs a dress that reflects all the social media feels in real-time, making it possible to wear everyoneâs heart on your sleeve.

Iâm pretty sure this is the MOST ADORABLE thing in the Universe today. Iâve tried to find the fabric on Spoonflower, but havenât gotten lucky yet. I bet Emily could probably use her superpowers to find it in a heartbeat. Stay tunedâŠ
For now, just let this girlâs love of math and science make your day.Â

UPDATE: The fabric is available via Fabric.com. Itâs designed by Sarah Johnston for Kaufman Fabrics. Thanks to @ninthfragment and @sweetestpiglet for the tip!

Scientist Hedy Lamarr Silhouette Cameo Necklace
An actress during Hollywoodâs Golden Age, Hedy Lamarr proved herself to be more than a pretty face. She was also a scientist who helped invent spread spectrum communications, a technology crucial to todayâs wireless communications. Originally designed to defeat the Nazis, the system became an important step in the development of cellular phones, fax machines and other wireless operations.

A dress is making headlines at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas: A high-tech garment made a splash at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show. It features mechanical limbs that react to social situations based on the userâs stress levels. What is known as the âSpider Dressâ contains a 3D-printed bodice with mechanical limbs that move to ward off those who invade the wearerâs personal space. The device contains 20 embedded proximity sensors, which have a range of about 23 feet, and bio-signals to monitor the wearerâs breathing and stress level. It also uses Intelâs Edison platform to react in real-time to changes in mood or emotion. The dress was created by Anouk Wipprecht, a Dutch-based designer and engineer who describes her expertise as âfashion-tech.â Her inspiration was to use âtechnology and the garment as a medium of interaction.â She also finds it interesting that the dress responds to the wearerâs internal reactions to the environment which are not always controllable. Wipprecht believes that the dress can be used for more than just a social experiment. She argues that its sensitivity to the bodyâs distress level could have healthcare applications as well, such as in cases of elevated cardiac activity.
This video shows the full articulation of the dress (or at least, more than is shown in the video above.)
