There is so, so much about Akira. I think this can be considered BTD only, since he's in so many different things and different series'. However, after getting my paws on Dollmaker's first draft, I think it can be a little of that too !

Here is where I would leave a disclaimer saying that I haven't wanted to alter canon too much, and that I'd fill in the blanks. But Akira is the most confusing character I've encountered, so adhering to canon information is hard, considering I don't think magic and mythological creatures from thousands of years ago are a part of his family tree in my vision. However, Akira isn't my character, I don't want people to see or think of him as such. Please take this as an AU, a version of his background before leading to how I write him, not for his BtD/Dollmaker background, thank you !
Background: In Canon, Akira was a sex worker from the age of 18, before he moved onto working as a contract killer for Sergio ( Sergio was possibly also his pimp?).
I don't change much about that, other than I specifically write Sano and Akira in Japan, which I don't think Sergio would be allowed to be a Yakuza boss, specifically due to Xenophobia.
So, with that said, Akira works as a red-light district worker on his own, starting at 18, when he has an encounter with a local Yakuza boss who keeps coming back as a customer. Akira is obviously treated worse by this person over his other clients, physically/sexually assaulted, cheated out of money, threatened, ect. That leads him to 'use', and start having sex with randoms at clubs for no money in order to regain some control over his body. Eventually, he's hired for under the table work, drug dealing, before being moved up to becoming a merc.
Personal Thoughts: Akira is one of my favorite characters, and yet he is handled so fucking poorly in canon. Everything is thrown around and jumbled and nothing really makes sense. He's either really sadistic and careless, or sweet, and he's just an overall douchebag. Again, he isn't my character, and I'm really trying my hardest to portray his trauma and his experiences well, despite not liking how he's written in all of those series' EP made. I want Akira to be ashamed, I want him to feel broken and alone, I want there to be a reason for him clinging to Sano, especially in Incestual ways. I want him not to like the things he has to do to get by, but instead gradually become detached emotionally, become empty.
This is getting too long, I have a lot to say, and Akira has a lot of potential. I hope I can portray him in a way that makes people see how good he can really be.
Musical Thoughts:
Immediately, the songs: Kiss and Swallow (IAMX) | FACE (BROCKHAMPTON) | Be Quiet and Drive Far Away (Deftones) come to my mind the second I think of Akira.
^ I'm almost 100% certain these aren't on EPs playlist for him, or anyone else's; but the softness of Face, a song about lost love, combined and contrasted with Chino Moreno's sorrowful screaming to escape his situation in Be Quiet and Drive, I think cover both sides of Akira very well.
With assigning an album, I have found myself torn between:
Kiss + Swallow (IAMX)
Clancy (Twenty One Pilots)
She Wants Revenge (She Wants Revenge)
I'm going to take the third, but the two above are really good ones I find myself listening to when it comes to writing for Akira's viewpoint !
Miscellaneous:
Voice Claim? Voice.. claim..? He's the one character that shares the same name (technically), and the same hair, pretty sure EP styled Akira after him but- Joker, Persona 5's English VA ! (does anyone else think it fits, too?)
I think he'd also really like Persona as a series, too, probably collects the figurines or plushies ! (seriously he fucking loves persona)
He's still a snake, just a white one like Sano ! Specifically an Iwakuni White snake !
Annabelle is still around, he sometimes crashes at her apartment in Osaka when the guilt and paranoia hit him too hard, and he doesn't want Sano to face him
His hair is fried from the dye, someone save him he's got split ends everywhere.
Yang: the hot sun, the outward strength. He never stays in one place at a time.
Closing Thoughts: Akira is a person at war with himself. Someone soft, someone protective and someone caring. On the outside, he is seen as a thug, an asshole, a nobody. You see him walking on the street, you cross it. You see him in an alleyway, you turn around and run.
He's a delinquent hiding where the lights of Shinjuku don't shine, craving intimacy and unable to grasp onto the concept of deserving it.
I hurt for him, really; He is more than a brute, more than a merc, more than a sadist. He doesn't fit in this game, an odd one out, and I think that's what makes him stick out to me more.
Please give Someone Speaks Softly by Rotworld a read. As old as it is, it depicts Akira perfectly. It's angsty, it's heartbreaking, it's wonderful.
