midsommar is such a phenomenal movie... truly the cult movie of all time... proved its thesis point so insanely well that there was legitimate discourse over whether it was "supposed to be a happy ending" or a "girlboss good for her movie" or an "i support women's wrongs" movie because the cult literally WORKED on y'all!!! y'all got fucking indoctrinated into the cult!!! i can't imagine ever creating something so deeply emotionally effective that it performed an unintentional psyop on my audience. ari aster you made my favorite movie ever and also one of my least favorite movies ever (beau is afraid although joaquin's performance was phenomenal imo) and this... is a crime for being able to make me feel polar opposite emotions. i hated beau is afraid so deeply that it made me mad at the very concept of arthouse cinema in a way i had not felt since charlie kaufman i'm thinking of ending things. y'all writer/director surrealism pseudo-horror arthouse bitches fly too close to the sun sometimes but the rest of the time damn icarus those wings are gorgeous and your flight has touched my soul. ari aster charlie kaufman darren aronofsky david fincher i hate all of you. i've drawn circles around black swan and requiem for a dream and synecdoche new york and mother! and midsommar and eddington and hereditary and gone girl and zodiac and fight club and the social network. and i'm frothing at the mouth. i love this genre i love these movies i love storytelling i love art, sometimes y'all piss me off but mostly i am but a worm in the ground finally being able to explain what it feels like when a human steps on the ground above me. did y'all know ari aster wrote midsommar while listening on repeat to unrelated music by the same composer he eventually got to create the soundtrack. some other guy's music inspired in him emotion so vivid that it painted Midsommar into his brain. and then he got that guy whose music was at the soul of his script and said "hey i made this movie because your music spoke to my soul. can you write its soundtrack" AND THAT IS WHY THE SOUNDTRACK FITS THE MOVIE PERFECTLY??? i imagine music video edit style movies in my brain while listening to music i love. imagine if someday i got to DIRECT THE MOVIES AND HIRE THE INSPIRATION MUSICIANS TO SCORE THEM??? i am sooooo high dude
