Gina’s Abortion Story/Historia del aborto de Gina
To follow in Spanish.
When I heard about the 1in3 campaign, I did not imagine that I would have the courage to tell my story about the abortion I had when I was 19 years old.
It took me almost 3 years to decide to tell my story and do the photo essay, here I tell you about my experience in this process.
When Ali the photographer came to my house to take the pictures, I was in very high spirits with the project and I thought it would be very easy, but it was not like that. My emotions and feelings became very present from the moment I started the tell my story about my abortion.
In fact, at some point, I hesitated to continue with the project, but I realized that it was important to talk about this, especially because my daughter was part of the project. I think it was her who gave me the courage to continue with this.
My daughter is 17 years old and, for me, it is important that she knows my history, that she knows where I come from and how it was to live in a Catholic, macho and homophobic society; but at the same time, supportive and compassionate.
I showed Ali my school diplomas from elementary school all the way to university, it was like going back to relive a little those stages of my life. I remembered how happy I was as a child and how terrible some years of my adolescence were.
Another difficult thing to talk about was the religious side. I was Catholic since I was born until a few years ago, so you already know how abortion affected me for years. I think this was the most difficult part of the project, because it made me remember how many years I lived with that feeling of guilt that did not let me be happy or enjoy my life.
Participating in this project and telling my story empowered me and helped me put an end to some ghosts that still lived in my mind, in addition to getting even closer to my daughter, who is so compassionate.
It is a lonely feeling when someone you care about becomes a stranger.

These Stunning Images Capture The Beauty & Grace Of India’s “Third Gender”
For years, the hijras of India — people who identify as belonging to a “third gender” — held a special place in society. “Hijras were both revered and feared as powerful entities who lived between the sexes,” according to photographer Jill Peters. “They were believed to bestow good fortune and fertility by dancing at weddings and the births of children.“

It is up for auction. You can help it go to the right home: a museum dedicated to Harriet Tubman.
