Goodbye Samira Mohan
posting all my feelings abt the santos-langdon conflict bc im so done w people saying stupid shit
regarding langdon:
addiction is very common in healthcare. like ridiculously so. Like more than 1 in 10 healthcare workers deal with addiction. despite the fact that he has many issues other than addiction, there is absolutely NO reason for langdon to be fired for it. and everyone knows that he got the drugs from the hospital. these people are doctors, they are not stupid, they can put two and two together. he is not an anomaly, he does not need to be publicly shamed, and he is not evil for it.
his actions and attitude towards santos during his first shift were terrible. no buts there. yes, they were influenced by the fact that he was being found out for his addiction, and by his general distaste for santos, but that literally does not change anything about the fact that he was her superior screaming at an intern on her first day for a mistake, not to mention the privilege he holds over her in a male-dominated, predominantly white field like medicine. he needs to learn to decenter himself, and honestly, he still isn't completely good at that, though he has definitely gotten a bit better. the way that he said "you don't understand what i've been through" to santos absolutely PISSED ME TF OFF. like dude. shut up. his problems are valid but he has still had such a good support system (as dana mentioned) that he did keep his job, he's in a rehab program, and though i do think there are definitely issues in his marriage and i wouldn't be surprised if he was divorced by the end of this season/the beginning of next season, he still does have his wife and children to rely on and to give him some sense of fulfillment. he is struggling, and his struggle with addiction is valid, but it is not something he can use as a catch-all to excuse his past actions. again, he doesn't have to be shamed, but he definitely has to be better.
but reiterating - he has definitely grown during rehab/the past 10 months, and he will probably continue to grow throughout the next few seasons. his past mistakes don't make him evil, they make him flawed. as he moves on in his recovery, he will inevitably learn to see himself better and will become better. he is at an all-time low right now, and (if the writers are not evil and don't just destroy him for the angst) he will only come up from here.
regarding santos:
similarly to langdon, many of santos' flaws stem from her struggles, specifically with her mental health and the trauma that she's faced in the past. the fact that she struggles to connect with people and convey that she cares about them properly and instead just insults them are flaws that she is responsible for and needs to overcome, but they are just flaws, not innate issues that make her evil. it is so ridiculous that so many people will defend langdon and say that his issues stem from his addiction and then act as if santos is just an asshole and has literally no struggles that might make her avoidant and bad at relationships, no, of course not (cough cough she totally does cough).
despite this, her flaws and her behavior are hers to regulate and fix. she needs to be kinder to the people around her, she needs to be more accepting of the fact that she cares about people, and she needs to learn to separate her past issues from her current life. as much as her response to her past trauma is valid, she cannot go on assuming that everyone who treats her poorly is equivalent to, or at least comparable to in a lesser degree, her former abuser. there is a huge difference between langdon's addiction and the implied sexual assault and harassment and grooming that she faced - sexual assault is inherently evil, while addiction is an amoral thing that can make someone do immoral actions, but does not make someone evil. santos needs to realize that while she has certainly suffered from the whole situation with langdon's addiction, she is not the sole, or even main "victim" of it (only using that word because it's the only one i can think of), and she is not the person who gets to determine if langdon is ready to work again, or is redeemed. she does have a bit of a victim complex here, shown again with her thinking that she is a sort of "pariah" in the er because of how she handled the situation with langdon (to me it doesn't even seem like everyone really hates her; most other people there want to be friends with her or generally respect her, even if they struggle with her abrasiveness), while she really just pushes people away.
all of that being said, one thing that people LOVE to claim is that santos has no empathy and is a bad doctor, which is just. so blatantly untrue it's not even funny. like, a huge part of her character has been how concerned she is about patients, specifically young girls, and their safety. she sings to the baby and holds the intact hand of the boy who was playing with fireworks while reassuring him that he's going to be ok. she invites whitaker into her home after knowing him for ONE (1) day and lets him live there rent free. she cares so deeply about the people around her, and just because she struggles to show it doesn't mean it isn't true. and further, this empathy, along with her obvious intelligence, is her main strength as a doctor. she cares so deeply about the people around her and will go to lengths to make sure they get the best care possible. when she puts the patient in the icebath in season 1, even when mohan is against it, she saves the patient's life through her intelligence and willingness to risk her own career for the chance of saving a patient. she then takes the blame for mohan's reluctance when langdon starts yelling at her because she doesn't want mohan to have to suffer through his attacks and make the er more tense. she is consistently shown to be extremely smart and empathetic, and her emotional immaturity when it comes to conveying her feelings does not change that.
TLDR: langdon and santos are both people struggling, with addiction and trauma respectively, and have flaws because of their struggles, but they are also both good people and good doctors and will grow and chance as they recover from their struggles. they are also twins separated at birth and i love them both dearly.
pet peeve is when you look up fashion references from a specific era and you keep getting modern day '[era]-inspired' fashion like NO i want authenticity damn it. i can see your 2020 photo quality and your 2020 hair and your 2020 makeup. youre not fooling me.
hello i'm a historical fashion researcher and i have a lot of experience looking up things! this is a very widely experienced irritation and you're definitely not alone in this, but i am here to share everything i know!
so, ways to get around this:
turn off AI results. they're literally nonsense to us
don't use pinterest because the sources/provenance is often hard to trace
a standard internet search can be okay, but museum collections are the top tier (list of collections below this list)
instead of broad terms like victorian, regency, tudor, renaissance etc. try using the decade you're looking for. if you're not sure of what decade it is but have a vague image in your head, look on the fashion history timeline and just jump around until you find it. but even changing to e.g. 19th century will give better results than victorian
including terms like womenswear/menswear, daywear, formal wear, evening wear, court dress should increase the value of your search too
including "fashion plates" in your search can give you a nice impression of the intended silhouettes of the era. some of these might be a little stylised but will show you what was considered in vogue
for pre-fashion plate eras or things like makeup and styling, you'll have to look at portraiture or manuscripts. these are harder to actually find what you're looking for, but searching museum collections and limiting results to specific date ranges will be your friend
when looking at art, do bear in mind sometimes artists would paint fabric extra flow-y to show off their skills. it might not have been exactly like that in terms of fabric weight or drape. so, a pinch of salt required!
if you find something on image search where the provenance is dubious, reverse image search and you might find a source! i've been able to trace random pinterest images to real sources, but this does take a lot of time and effort and is often not worth the headache
some online resources and museum collections:
fashion history timeline is an invaluable resource if you're trying to get a feel for everything and should be your first port of call. it'll also link to good examples
the met has a vast number of extant examples of clothing, as well as fashion plates
costume institute fashion plates is a subcollection of the met for fashion plates (1800s-1922)
v&a also has many extant garments, fashion plates, and incredible articles on clothing and aesthetics. read the details of the objects because they'll often reveal a lot about the piece
lacma is good for C19th-20th pieces
nypl digital collection for photographs
national portrait gallery or similar for portraiture, or literally any museum in your country that has historical art
national museums scotland can be useful situationally but might be oddly specific
stout style history is a great collection for finding image references for fat people wearing historical clothes. survival bias of a lot of museum pieces tends towards smaller clothing that couldn't be repurposed, but this aims to counter that. it's not sortable, but is still a really nice resource
wikimedia commons is surprisingly handy! and the images, if you should need to link/repost them, are public domain
auction websites sound like a funny one to recommend. some won't have mannequins and some will. just look up historical garment auctions and you'll find some!
anyway, i hope this has been a good place to start for anyone interested! there are probably some i've missed because there are so many museums across the world and i don't know about all of them or can't remember them. but these are the ones i've used the most! (my specialisation/jobs i've had to research for have only really been in western fashion, so my resources reflect that)
Wikipedia has a list of fashion museums. Unfortunately, the page itself is only available in German, but the introductory paragraph is very short and after that, it's organised by country, and then it's a simple list. If you click on a museum's article, the website is usually linked in the overview table.
being obsessed with captain america: the winter soldier in 2014 is something that will always be inside of you
Cafe at The Portland art museum has Rothko no. 5 cakes. Something intellectually meaty about seeing the painting in person, and then eating a cake copy. The complete experience. Full spectrum.
beware.... this is what thomas harris spoke of.........
DO NOT ❌❌ SEPARATE
read a fic where tfw went to the beach post-canon and they had a chicken fight and dean blue screen winchester had a moment of realizing his legs were wrapped around cas' strong shoulders and exactly just how that affected him and now I need that to happen every time they go to the beach in a fic
Here’s the fic, it’s amazing 😊

also i did not expect i would be thinking about this but victoria making videos about "dealing with difficult co-workers" and they're almost always about trinity but it's becoming increasingly clear that trinity has a crush and victoria's followers start the impossible journey of making her realize that, "hey, maybe that woman is just trying to get you into bed"

In the club
I think I’m literally never gonna be sick of this masterpiece. I think watching it on a loop for eight hours could fix me. Dancing’s what clears my soul. Dancing’s what makes me whole.
I just love that this very video is an accumulation of thousands of years worth of art made by people who have never met each other. The concept of this video was so completely unfathomable to every single artist who made the sculptures and yet they’ve all put something toward the creation of it.
ITS BACK ON MY TIMELINE
