things had been bad. really bad lately. everything he - and all of them, really - had been through was insane. hard to even think about. emerson, of course, kept his secrets even about where he'd been when his brother had been in an internment camp. too harsh was the reality of what he'd lived through to even dwell on.

he was glad that alice would be with them for the trip to fort harmony. between frenchie and kimiko having sex or making out every second and hughie and starlight acting weird around each other, he was glad for a non awkward person to be around in the back of butcher's van. he hugged her back with a smile. "seriously glad to see you," he tells her softly. "and you know i'll absolutely make sure we get the good stuff."

canada was nice, and in terms of shit they'd been doing it was peaceful. it had given her time to her pull her shit together. she'd needed it. she'd ridden out the worst of her withdrawal there. she was clean for real this time and she intended to stay that way if she could help it. she was nervous though, it was hard not to be when these were people who'd only known her dependent on various substances. she worried they wouldn't like her sober, but she had to find out eventually. no better time than now, right?

at least emerson was glad to see her. that was reassuring. if things sucked going forward, at least emerson was glad to share the good snacks with her. "let's go find somewhere to divide this shit up then. show me around." alice nodded around them at the school they found themselves in. it was weird for sure, but it kinda made sense that this was the only place they could hide out in. "what have i missed out on?"

she couldn't help but snort at that. she wasn't about to outright admit to all the shit she did, but it was hard to even bullshit and call herself a good person. "i'm going to be so real with you, i suck. but like i'm aware of it." so was she really that bad? probably, but there were certainly worse people.

she barely noticed she'd been lead into a motel bathroom until she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror as annie started up the tub. it wasn't the first time she'd gotten her hands dirty, but certainly hands were one thing. she'd killed someone. like really, it wasn't even an accident. she could feel the blood seeping into her clothes, onto her skin, maybe staining it. she'd have to throw it all out. if only she could throw the top layer of her skin out with it. instead she'd have to settle for scrubbing. she thought she was tougher than this, she thought she wouldn't need someone. she'd thought when the time came to it, she'd just roll with it. she wasn't rolling with it. she needed to be rolling with it. that train of thought shook her out of it a little. "no, no i've got this it's fine. it's no big deal." she'd have to figure out how to wash her hair without touching it but that could be worked out. probably. "it's not my first time," would have sounded a lot more believable if her voice hadn't cracked.

It was his a risky mission that he'd been assigned to, but that wasn't anything new. It wasn't like he would say no anyway, Wenwu was the one person who he wouldn't say no to. All of it done to prove his worth, to prove time wasn't wasted on him. It was why he had reached out to someone he knew would be of use for what they were intending to do. Going into the United States without much attention required certain documents, ones that couldn't be traced back to them and were believable. She had been the one that came up for that very job and so he had contacted her, given her the necessary information and directions on where to go when all was said and done.

That was where he waited, several men inside keeping themselves occupied with a card game and some tv. All waiting until they heard several loud bangs on the door. His attention shifted, large frame getting up out of his chair and making his way over to open it enough for his frame to take up the entryway. "That's me." He says giving a nod, glad she was good at following directions. Stepping aside, he motions her in before green gaze lifts to look around and close the door behind her. A hand lifts once more for her to follow, leading her towards what was a private room where they could talk and look over the contents of the package. "You have everything?" He asks, shutting the door behind her and motioning for her to take a seat.

she looked up at him. like way up, she'd thought they were kidding or maybe over compensating when she'd seen the height she'd been asked to put on his papers, but no, he was just as tall as he'd said. she was intimidated, obviously, by the sheer stature of the guy, but she was really trying had not to focus on it. it wasn't like people were itching to kill her, right? she did what they'd asked and if they liked what she did, she could offer them an open door to have more made whenever they wanted. it was good to have someone with her skillset in the rolladex. or at least, that was what she told herself so that she wasn't second guessing herself every time she walked into a room like this.

alice nodded, following him inside and to the room. she tried not to give into her instincts and look around. of course she was curious, but she was trying not to be stupid. these kinds of people didn't really like when you knew too much. "yeah of course." she slid the envelop out from under her arm and held it at her side as they walked. she needed to find something to say, it was compulsive. she just didn't like being quiet that much. "i'm gonna be honest i thought they were kidding about how tall you are cause-uh men are always overestimating. but you clearly weren't. good for you."

to her he deserves to be permanently memorialized on her body in a way that is purposeful and tender.

she hopes if there's an afterlife he knows that the marks he left on people weren't just scars, that people want to remember him for who he was at his core.

anyway my initial post show thots

alice came into the story because of frenchie. she would have never gotten involved with butcher's crew if it wasn't for him. in a lot of ways she was dependent on him so i think it's only right that she leaves it alone(ish) on her own terms. she has her friends who are more like her family. she has a support network who didn't give up on her when she was a mess. but it's also the first time she has an opportunity to go off into the world alone, unburdened as herself.

i think she goes for a long, long drive, maybe to the pnw or alaska or canada. and then she packs her life up into boxes, and sells it. and maybe she lives out of a hotel room for a while, but then she rents a real house. and she gets to live, and get treated for her issues by actual medical professionals instead of using black market pills. she gets to be a hero if she wants to or she could just be someone with powers. and yeah, people know who she is and what she was involved with but she's not dodging the cops anymore. she gets a clean slate. (at least with the government, she probably has some criminal shit to clean up)

and in a year or so, when shit settles down, she reconnects with her sister. she sends everyone birthday cards and visits them for holidays. she visits frenchie's grave site and builds something out of ice for him every year.

things had gotten pretty fucked and alice needed to be elsewhere to stay clean. she needed to be with the people she knew would keep her head in the game and not remind her of the person she used to be when she was high. there was a downside to being away from everyone though, no emerson. they called and texted, but it wasn't the same. so when alice got the call that they wanted her help when they went to fort harmony, of course she came back. she missed them, enough time had passed that she thought she could be around them again.

"were you miserable without me?" alice asked, pulling emerson into a tight hug. she'd gotten back early and they had a couple hours to spare before they were set to leave which meant they had time to catch up. "i brought snacks for the road, you wanna pick which ones you want and hide em so no one eats the good ones but us?" she held up a plastic bag from the gas station full of snacks and soda.
