Thalia - My custom nodejs server

Thalia

Thalia is a nodejs server, which allows for simple serving of multiple websites from one instance.

This allows me to quickly create a new project folder and get to work. It contains a basic HTML5 boilerplate that sets you up with bootstrap, jquery, datatables & d3.js

The project folders can be git repos or shared with Dropbox if you’re collaborating with less technical people. I often share these folders with friends who are learning to code so we have a shared workspace, or in hackathons when work needs to be synced across the team quickly and put online instantly

Quickstart

To install, download the repository from github.com/david-ma/Thalia then run:

npm install bower install gulp build npm start Note that npm start needs your admin password because it will start serving the website on port 80

Use gulp serve if you want to develop stuff.

If you want to start a new project, just copy the example folder and rename it. run gulp serve –site “folder_name” to start developing in that site. Note that running gulp will delete and rebuild the public folder from the src folder so I recommend only developing this way if all your developers know what the’re doing. If it’s just a simple Dropbox-shared project with a bunch of non-developers on your team, maybe stay away from using gulp.

Features

Besides simple serving of a public folder, Thalia can also do:

Redirects (e.g. david-ma.net/publications redirects you to my google scholar page.) Url Mapping (e.g. david-ma.net/hackers maps to the file hackers.txt) Services and REST (e.g. david-ma.net/reddit/questions runs a function which checks my database for the latest “Official Questions Thread” on /r/photography and then you there. Services can also be used for REST interfaces, e.g. localstories.info/requestjson pulls a random file as JSON from the ABC Local archive, which was part of a project I did for the GovHack hackathon once upon a time. Web Sockets (Very good for sending data back and forth between pages without a page refresh. It’s the new Ajax. If you want Ajax you can still do it on Thalia using the REST stuff mentioned above.) Domains (The same workspace can be served to as many different domains as you want. E.g. localstories.info and localstories.com.au both point at the same website) Port fowarding (e.g. slack.redditphotography.com proxies to redditphotography.com:3000, allowing me to have different things running on the same machine.) I should probably explain how to use those things, but I’ve written enough here and don’t think anyone is going to read this anyway. On Social Media and your online footprint

I have a very big online footprint. Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s healthy to put myself so far out there, but I’d rather be up front with my online activity and put my best foot forward, rather than hide it away and hope nobody knows how to google my name.

I use online tools for almost everything. I’m writing this blog post on Tumblr right now, I’m using it to collect my thoughts for a workshop that I’m running for the photography societies at UNSW, USyd and Macquarie Uni this week (and UTS later this year).

I use Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Swarm, Reddit, WahtsApp, Slack, Tumblr, LinkedIn, GitHub, etc. etc. If you look at my current homepage, it’s just a link to my stupidly large online footprint.

I justify using all these services differently. I think the main reason I use online stuff so much is because I have a poor memory and if I didn’t write things down or keep photos somewhere, I’d forget things.

I use Facebook to keep in touch with 1492 friends/acquaintances. I went to 7 different schools and was at University for almost a decade (and still am associated with universities). Facebook helps me remember who people are.

I use Twitter in a somewhat professional way, I primarily keep it around so that I can talk to other scientists at conferences and events. It’s a good way to engage a professional community in a casual way. Messaging someone on LinkedIn makes you seem desperate, like you want a job or something from them. Tweeting them is a much easier way to start talking to them.

Reddit is something that I wasted a lot of time on during University, and I’ve just become a defacto leader on /r/photography because I took the initiative to set up some regular threads and drive the community interaction. Somehow I ended up running regular threads and things, and 4 competitions! In our last one we gave out $7000 of stuff given by our generous sponsors! (insert link to blog post about competition)

I use Instagram because as the moderator of a 279,000+ person photography community, I HAVE to be at least somewhat decent at taking photos myself. Instagram is also a good way to keep my twitter fresh. By using IFTTT (link to blog post here...) to automatically post my instagram pics to my twitter, it means that when I message someone on twitter, my recent history doesn’t have stuff from 2012 in it.

I use Snapchat because it keeps my Instagram quality up. I post my stupid shit to snapchat, like playing with my brother & sister or concerts or food, etc.

You can tell how unemployed someone is by how up-to-date their LinkedIn is. I only update mine when I’m looking for work. I’m not sure it’s helped me get hired, but I did notice someone from my current employer’s HR check my LinkedIn before I got my offer, so, maybe it does help? There has been a recent push for people to blog and post “content” on LinkedIn but I still wouldn’t touch it if I wasn’t looking for a job. 

I keep my Last.fm active because I love data and I want to be able to see what songs I’ve been listening to (insert link to #dataviz here...)

I love spotify collaborative playlists (insert link to dataviz here)

If you don’t know what github is, don’t worry about it. It’s a programmer thing for sharing code.

I keep a food blog called “The Perks Of Being A Food Blogger” because I have a bunch of friends in the food blog community. I like to show off and share nice food when I spend a lot of money on it, and I like to know where the best food is so it’s good to be active in the community. You also get invited to new restaurants and events sometimes :)

I keep this tumblr to blog about tech and things in general, to get my thoughts down 

I think that’s most of my online footprint and why I have it. There is probably more that I’ve forgotten about.

(Note I’ve left a lot of stubs in this post... there are a lot of blog posts that I have rough drafts for that I haven’t gotten around to posting. This one would sit as a draft for ages too but I think I should just stop worrying and post more)

On Coding Things Quickly.

VIZBI is a fantastic conference where Bioinformaticians meet Graphics Designers, Data Visualisers, Doctors, Biologists, Scientists, Engineers, Mathematicians, etc. etc. I’m not even sure which one I identify as - I wear so many of the hats. I think a lot of people think I’m there as the photographer or social media person because I spend a lot of time tweeting and asking people to pose for photos... but then I’m like, hey tell me about your work, I’m into science as well!

Anyway, after Day 0 of VIZBI, the workshop day, we went to the local university where the local bioinformatics student’s group (Heidelberg Unseminars in Bioinformatics) was having an “unconference” to match with VIZBI. It was basically a fun 3 hour series of drinks, talks & activities.

For one of the 30min breakout sessions, we were given access to a bunch of datasets, ranging from Serial Killers to World Bank Data to UFO Sightings. We were supposed to get together in teams of 4 and come up with ways to visualise the data. Francis and I explored a lot of the datasets and tried to think of ways to join different sets together in interesting ways. In the end we just took the London Tube data and while Francis did some beautiful concepts, I got cracking on the website.

I didn’t get too far, but you can check out our work at david-ma.net/vizbi or in the video attached to this blog (Video added because that website isn’t going to stay up forever. I’m talking to you, random visitor from 2023, why are you reading my old blog posts?). I didn’t have time to implement all of the ideas Francis and I came up with, but we managed to make something fairly interesting. You can clearly see the peak hour traffic at 9am and 5pm.

There are lots of improvements that could be made, such as putting a threshold where the station goes red to indicate “avoid at all costs” or having a slider to make the exploration easier.

When I got up to show everyone what Francis & I had drunkenly made in 30 mins, it became apparent that we weren’t actually expected to make something on the spot - the activity was just talk about making something...

Getting Rate Limited by Twitter

In relation to this post, the #VIZBI tweet stream was on a 60 second refresh during the event. I’ve taken this down to a 10 minute refresh rate now that the event is over, just so I’m not wasting so many resources and risking getting rate limited.

Speaking of which, we were rate limited for a short time because every 60s I would scrape 20 posts (10 from the list of users, 10 from my own timeline) then try to post add them all to the collection - 22 API requests every 60 seconds. I’m allowed 180 (of each type) every 15 mins. The fastest way to reduce this was to check for duplicates instead of using twitter to reject the duplicates.

This is still (at least) 1 request per tweet added to the collection, which is ok for a small event like #VIZBI which has less than 50 tweeters, but for a larger event you’ll want to use the collections/list/curate API, which requires you to post a JSON body. It’s fairly simple to implement but I didn’t want to waste any extra time over-engineering a solution to a solved problem during the event because I wanted to pay attention to the talks!

Twitter handles rate limiting very well, they’re very clear about when you get rate limited and they return a 429 error to requests hitting the limit, so as a developer you can easily figure out what you’re doing wrong :)

Twitter Stream for events

Often organisers of events will want to have a twitter stream showing tweets about their event. Twitter allows embedding timelines on your website quite easily. The main methods that people use are User Timeline or Search Timeline. Twitter also allows User Lists and Collections.

User Timeline

Using this method, you have an account which is featured on your website. You can retweet people’s tweets and they’ll be added to your timeline. Unfortunately this method is very labour intensive, you need someone to constantly be using the account, tweeting and retweeting, otherwise the stream gets stale and your event looks very quiet.

Search Timeline

The Search/Hashtags timeline is the other commonly used method, this a lot less work, however there is potential for abuse if people realise that everything they tweet in your hashtag will be shown on your website. Spam is a big problem because there is no way to delete someone else’s tweet from a hashtag.

User Lists

User lists allow you to manually select users who’s tweets will be shown in a timeline. This is not suitable because people are not guaranteed to talk about your topic/event.

Collections

Collections are lists of tweets, these must be added manually... or using the Twitter API. And that’s where the fun begins!

My solution is to:

Create a User List where I manually people who are active in the community. This is easy at a conference where there are only about 40 people tweeting. All I need to do is monitor the hashtag and add people who are actually at the event.

Write a script that scrapes the User List timeline for tweets, and any time someone mentions a keyword, add it to the collection.

This gives us much greater control over what tweets are shown and what aren’t shown. Once set up, it does not need much monitoring and bad tweets can easily be removed. If you’d like this solution for your event tweet me @frostickle for the code.

Lentil as Anything in Newtown, Sydney!

Cindy and I are now expatriates of Sydney, so it’s a special occasion when we’re in town. Also Albert and Jenny are officially engaged or something, that’s probably special and worth mentioning too.

Lentil as Anything is a pay what you can restaurant. The food is cooked in large batches and there is a set menu, if you’re hungry and down on your luck, come over for a really good feed and don’t feel bad about not being able to put in more. You can volunteer to help in the kitchen or help out in other ways. Of course, if you can afford to put in more, please do, it helps keep Lentil as Anything open!

I’d like to blog more, because I believe that blogging is good for you:

Blogging forces you to put your random thoughts down into words, and you have to polish your thoughts into something coherent.

You can come back later and see your old ideas, keep track of your growth and all the things you’ve done.

I often find myself re-telling the same information to a different people. It’s good to have a blog post to just link people to.

It’s good to have old blog posts that explain ideas or concepts or even just instructions for doing things so you can just throw a link into an old post instead of spending a paragraph explaining something in a new blog post!

Things I’ve been meaning to blog about:

Hackathons - I just went to #GGJ16 this weekend and it was fantastic! I’m also planning to help to organise Govhack and Health Hack this year, and I help run the Hackathons Australia Facebook group.

Volunteer Organisations - I’d like to blog about volunteer organisations in general. I’ve done quite a lot of volunteering, including: First aid officer for St John’s, Youth Ambassador for the Red Cross, Secretary of my local Leo’s Club... ok this list is going to get very long so I’ll save that for the blog post! But I’d like to talk about the good and bad of volunteering, and spending time on unpaid projects.

Travel - I feel like I’m a much better traveller now than I was a few years ago and I’d like to document what lessons I’ve learnt. In 2015 I traveled to the USA (twice!), Canada and Indonesia.

Moving - I just moved to a new city! Making new friends! House hunting!

Photography - More tutorials! I hoping to be doing a few more workshops at a bunch of universities this year :)

Mammoth Cafe in Armadale, Melbourne!

As a newcomer to Melbourne, I’m relying on my friends to show me where the good food is at - Steph took me to this refreshingly cute cafe in Armadale where we shared “The Benedict” (a fried egg on corn bread + sausage), “Lobster Donut Burger” (exactly what it sounds like, lobster between two halves of a donut!!!) and a “Golden Gaytime panna cotta” (which had honeycomb and gold-flakes!) for desert 😋

It was delicious and I’ll definitely be back to try out the rest of the items on the menu!

Bebek Bengil in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!

I recently moved to Melbourne for work, and my friends Amelie and Xibing moved to Singapore earlier in 2015. Tom and Sue were left in Sydney (although who knows how long before they move too?). So to celebrate the new year rather than fly back to Sydney, we all flew to Bali!

We spent the first half our trip in relaxing Ubud, and one of the restaurants which was recommended to us was Bebek Bengil - the dirty duck. If you want to eat here, I recommend that you call the day before and order your duck in advance! Otherwise they may run out!

The food was quite decent, but I don’t consider it a “must visit”. (A must visit in Ubud is Naughty Nuri’s for sticky BBQ pork ribs!!!)

Brasserie Bread in Botany Bay!

I’ve made it something of a tradition for me to visit Brasserie Bread whenever I visit the airport to pick someone up, it’s a great place for a very Australian brunch after getting off the plane.

Brasserie Bread is probably the first place that I specifically drove out to due to a social media post. Someone posted their sourdough pancakes and they looked so good that I just had to go try them for myself. Since then I’ve gone from Facebook spamming to Instagramming food pics to Food Blogging and you can probably blame Brasserie Bread for all of that!

It’s a great place for an outing - they have baking classes that are great for kids or for adults wanting to learn a new skill. If you can’t make it out to Botany Bay fear not - Brasserie Bread is a bakery that supplies many cafes and restaurants around Sydney and Melbourne.

I probably say this about every restaurant but you should really bring someone to share your meal with so you can order lots of different things. I recommend the Sourdough Pancakes & something savoury like the Smoked Trout, and don’t forget to get a loaf of single origin sourdough to take away & almond croissants!!!

Time-Lapse Photography at the #SydneyTowerMeet

A few weeks ago @matjoez​ organised an Instagram Meetup at Sydney Tower. Matthew Vandeputte’s specialty is doing time lapse photography. He has put a lot of his time-lapse work on youtube and he vlogs regularly. Here’s his post about the meetup:

I’ve been inspired to shoot more time-lapses! Also, the upcoming v4.0 firmware update for my camera will allow me to shoot time-lapses in-camera, without needing to do so much post production on my computer.

If you want to go up to shoot time lapses, especially from inside a building, here is what you’ll need:

A decent camera - That’s not to say you can’t do it using a compact camera or an iPhone, but if you’re going to spend hours on end sitting around babysitting your intervalometer, you might as well use the best camera you can get.

A backup camera - Because it really sucks making your way out to a really fantastic location and then having your gear fail on you. On that note: Extra Batteries and Extra Memory Cards. The secondary body also gives you something to do while waiting for your time-lapse to shoot.

Tripod - A full tripod is good, but not 100% necessary. All I have right now is a mini tripod. I sometimes just bundle up a jacket to position my camera how I want it.

Intervalometer. (If it isn't built into your camera) This device will allow you to shoot one photo every minute, for the duration of your time lapse. You can get one of these for about $20-$30, the cheap Chinese ones work just as well as the expensive ones. Just make sure your intervalometer allows you to set the length of your exposure.

Black cloth + tape, or a fancy lens skirt with suction caps. This will help block reflections if you're shooting through a window.

Polarising filter - same reason as the black cloth, it'll help you shoot through windows.

Slider - This is where doing time-lapses can start to really get expensive. If you want to know how bad it can get... take a look at Matt’s video on all the gear he took on a recent trip to Dubai.

2 Meter Pizza at Via Napoli Pizzeria in Surry Hills!

For Mitch’s birthday we went to the new Via Napoli Pizzeria in Surry Hills. The Via Napoli Pizzeria in Lane Cove is an old favourite that never fails to disappoint and this place is the same. It’s very authentically Italian and we always have a good time.

Needless to say the food is fantastic. I highly recommend bringing a big group so you can try everything. We had a large group of more than 12 people, and were able to order the 2 meter pizza, 2 pastas, 1 gnocchi and a big antipasto board AND drinks. It worked out to be cheaper than their $45 set menu (since drinks aren’t included in that) and everyone got to have some of everything.

Yesterday A few months ago I attended Canva’s event “Startup Engineering at Canva: Front-end”, there were 5 speakers, Guy Kawasaki, Cameron Adams, Patrick Lee, Julio Ody and Chris Doble.

Guy Kawasaki was one of the Apple employees originally responsible for marketing the Macintosh in 1984, and is now Canva’s Chief Evangelist. Yesterday he talked about 3 things:

1) Fear is a great motivator

2) The customer doesn’t always know what they want

3) Avoid the Bozo Explosion

I could write a lot about Guy’s but I think the best thing to do is just link you to his own blog about the subject.

Cameron Adams, Canva’s Chief of Product and cofounder talked to us about what it was like getting Canva off the ground as a startup. He told us about lessons he took from working on Google Wave - where they used the Google Web Toolkit to write websites in Java and the compile it into HTML, Javascript and CSS. He found that this was too slow for face paced development, since every little change required a 10 minute compilation of the code before you could see how your change affected the website.

Patrick Lee continued Cameron’s talk with the next stage of the development of a startup. He gave advice on developing your company’s methodologies as you grow from 3 people to 10 people to 30 people. He said that generally companies need to reinvent their workflow every time the number of staff triples. This means using better version control, upgrading the style guide, etc. What works for 3 people may not work for 10 people. When the company is small you can all sit together and just tap each other on the shoulder when you need to talk to them, but when you have 30 different people, you can’t all sit next to each other! You have to start having weekly meetings!

Julio Ody talked about using Backbone and React, and how picking the right tools is important for a tech startup.

Chris Doble talked about “The Rule of 3 and 10″ - changes that companies go through as they grow. He’s observed that the big changes happen around the time the project/startup/team triples in size. For instance:

1 Person = You can keep everything in your head, you don’t need to talk to anyone else, you can make the decisions quite easily.

3 People = Communicating is easy, you sit next to each other and can just tap each other on the shoulder if you need to make a decision.

10 People = You need weekly meetings, you will probably start using Slack (or a similar communication service).

Sorry this took so long to post! I actually wrote most of this right after the session but more important things than tech blogging have taken priority. The next thing I blog about will probably be about Matthew Vandeputte’s #SydneyTowerMeet and tips on shooting timelapse photos!

Golden Lotus’s Vegan Ubernoms

Yes, “ubernoms” is totally a word–and also a totally apt term for the food at Golden Lotus, a Vietnamese vegan restaurant situated in the vegan-friendly (and gelato-studded) Newtown. I had the pleasure of hitting both the restaurant and a nearby gelateria with a group of vegan and omnomnivore friends in Sydney, including blogger and (superior) photographer David Ma, who has provided all the photos in this post.

We all flipped through the menu and chose a dish each to share, as you do. And what better than to start with some moreish rice paper tofu rolls ($5.80 each)?

Which was then followed by some chewy char-grilled vegan pork skewers, served with a delicious sauce ($9.80).

Jake wanted an entire dish to himself, and he certainly seemed to enjoy his vegan chicken with lemongrass ($14.80), which he polished off without a problem.

And why not have more veggies with our soy “meat”? This vegan chicken stir fry with veggies and cashews ($15.80) certainly did the trick!

Avi, our resident vegan food expert (and the one who recommended Golden Lotus) got the combination hot pot ($15.80), which contained a mishmash of beautifully flavoured veggies.

Avi also suggested we get the sizzling Saigon pan cake ($15.80), which was a DIY dish containing several components, centred on the vegan omelette. Each bit was yummy by itself, but together, provided a wonderful combination of textures and flavours. It was a little messy to assemble and eat, but I’d definitely get this again!

But by far, my favourite dish of the evening was the fried vegan calamari with salt and chilli ($15.80). Goodness me, these tasted just like calamari, and were so amazing and aaaahhhhh I want some right now!

And then we had a group shot taken, because David’s isn’t as single-minded as me, and photographs people as well as food. ;)

Overall: I’ve only had vegan “meat” once before (in Canberra with Avi, incidentally), so I’m by no means an expert on the quality of the soy-based substitutes, and how the flavours compare to other vegan restaurants. However, as a omnomnivore, I very much enjoyed my meal, and was very pleased with how everything tasted. The service was also excellent, and the staff were particularly patient with our indecisiveness. If I had a restaurant like Golden Lotus where I live, I’d definitely visit occasionally, regardless of vegan company–and oh, that calamari! 8.5/10.

The Elephant Bean in Katoomba!

XiaoHui took me stargazing! We camped out on Narrow Neck Ridge overnight and took long exposure photos of the Milky Way! (Note: that first picture was taken by Xiaohui!)

In the morning we had breakfast at The Elephant Bean in Katoomba, they have good coffee, and their beans on toast was good, but I wasn’t a fan of their sandwiches+salad. The main reason we picked The Elephant Bean was because they were the only ones open on a Sunday morning!

Unfortunately I forgot to take photos of the outside and decor of Nazimi! I always seem to focus on the food and forget about the rest. Nazimi is a little hard to find, it’s on York Street next to the QVB, tucked away downstairs in a little alcove, it’s a real hidden gem of Sydney.

I highly recommend this place for dates (although Mel recommends this place for breakups)
