Time-Lapse Photography at the #SydneyTowerMeet
A few weeks ago @matjoez organised an Instagram Meetup at Sydney Tower. Matthew Vandeputte’s specialty is doing time lapse photography. He has put a lot of his time-lapse work on youtube and he vlogs regularly. Here’s his post about the meetup:
I’ve been inspired to shoot more time-lapses! Also, the upcoming v4.0 firmware update for my camera will allow me to shoot time-lapses in-camera, without needing to do so much post production on my computer.
If you want to go up to shoot time lapses, especially from inside a building, here is what you’ll need:
A decent camera - That’s not to say you can’t do it using a compact camera or an iPhone, but if you’re going to spend hours on end sitting around babysitting your intervalometer, you might as well use the best camera you can get.
A backup camera - Because it really sucks making your way out to a really fantastic location and then having your gear fail on you. On that note: Extra Batteries and Extra Memory Cards. The secondary body also gives you something to do while waiting for your time-lapse to shoot.
Tripod - A full tripod is good, but not 100% necessary. All I have right now is a mini tripod. I sometimes just bundle up a jacket to position my camera how I want it.
Intervalometer. (If it isn't built into your camera) This device will allow you to shoot one photo every minute, for the duration of your time lapse. You can get one of these for about $20-$30, the cheap Chinese ones work just as well as the expensive ones. Just make sure your intervalometer allows you to set the length of your exposure.
Black cloth + tape, or a fancy lens skirt with suction caps. This will help block reflections if you're shooting through a window.
Polarising filter - same reason as the black cloth, it'll help you shoot through windows.
Slider - This is where doing time-lapses can start to really get expensive. If you want to know how bad it can get... take a look at Matt’s video on all the gear he took on a recent trip to Dubai.
