He mentioned something about Loki being trafficked and I'd really like to find that clip. Yep, totally. Not like he’s having problems walking, or is showing clear signs of exhaustion or anything.

Added thought: You realize that out of all of the Avengers (including his own brother) only the Hulk was able to do any real physical damage to him.

He got blown up by both Phil Coulson and Hawkeye. He was thrown out of a skyscraper window (do you realize how thick those windows are?) by Tony’s suit. He got his ass kicked by his big brother (who is also a demi-god and physically stronger). Not a single one of those events caused him any real physical harm. Not. A. Single. One.

It took the Hulk to draw blood, to bruise him. And even after that, he was only banged up a little. (Consider how capable he is of walking next to Thor at the end of the film.)

Why do I bring this up? Because it is clear that he is significantly worse off physically at the beginning than any other time in the film—including the Hulk-smash. There is no question that wherever he came from, he was going through physical torture (and I’d wager mental torture, too).

Now I’m crying.

I’m glad other people are bringing up that Loki appears to have been tortured because I noticed it a long time ago and everyone I mentioned it to was like, “What!? Are you crazy!? Loki’s just evil!” But it’s not that simple. I’m hoping that in either the third Thor film or in Loki’s own film they address what really happened between Thor and The Avengers. Or not. Maybe the writers left huge questions like these for the fans to discuss and explore. Maybe that’s part of the experience.

And yet he was still able to get into SHIELD’s compound and kill most of their strike team, while taking several of their valued agents AND the Tesseract with him in his getaway. And when pursued by SHIELD, he doesn’t just huddle away in the back of the vehicle while Hawkeye does his evasive driving maneuvers – he repeatedly uses the scepter to shoot the pursuing cars, and later the helicopter that has Nick Fury in it.

Loki’s so weak and drained here, struggling to even walk properly, yet he still finds the strength and determination to fight his enemies back at every opportunity.

I kind of feel like we will never receive the answer to the questions posed in this post. I think Marvel has veered away from Loki (I have a hunch) and I think his role will be diminished in the future movies. It would have been really to get the answers to his motivations in the Avengers, and the fact that he didn’t appear totally evil even though he was menacing. We get to see his pain and suffering but we don’t get his story.

I wonder if we ever will, seeing how Thor: TDW did not answer or hint at anything about Thanos-Loki connection. The thread has remained dormant for far too long. I mean, I’d pleasantly surprised if Loki is given a proper arc and his story is completed. I’d really applaud Marvel then.

I do agree that in the Avengers, Loki had been through some kind of manipulation at the hands of Thanos. But the fact that he bent his war in such a way that it was bound to be lost gives credit to the theory that he did it deliberately. He lost on purpose. He knew what Thanos would do if he got his hands on the Tesseract, and he didn’t want that to happen. So he made it look like an honest defeat, got himself beat up even to prove it. It was only implied to in the Avengers, because he had to look like a villain. The movie would not have worked if Loki was proven to be an anti hero. The heroes would have looked really bad then.

What I have as headcanon is that he suffered through Thanos’s torture, and did get manipulated, but not enough to completely lose his mental faculties. He played along with Thanos and promised them the Tesseract so that they’d let him go in order to get it. He saw his opportunity and grabbed it, made a break for it. He landed on Earth and tried to initiate a faux war, led the Chitauri to their demise by not calling them all in at once but in waves. He carved a narrative to convince Thanos that he tried. He actually united the Avengers by antagonizing them personally, and it worked. If we see MCU death toll for the New York attack, I think the number of dead people doesn’t even cross like 200. That’s a surprisingly low number for the kind of attack it appeared to be. People should’ve been dead in thousands, but that didn’t happen. It’s probably because 1) Loki gave a fairly advance warning about the attack. 2) He opened the portal at the most accessible location for the heroes (Stark Tower) and not in the middle of, say, the Atlantic/Pacific Ocean. 3) He perhaps told the Chitauri to not directly attack people. We saw cars blow up, not people. 4) He did not go out of his way to kill. I didn’t see him kill anyone for fun, like Fury had claimed. It was always to serve a purpose. I’m not condoning his actions, just pointing out that he had to make it look authentic, but with minimal damage. That’s what he did. He didn’t even attack everyone inside that chamber where he had landed through the Tesseract, only the ones who were firing at him.

I’m hoping against hope that Marvel takes it up and gives Loki a proper conclusion. Right now it looks like they’ve abandoned him and relegated him to a minor character. (It pisses me off to no end).

So I’ve said this for years but children of emotional and psychological abuse (and neglect) learn to make themselves small and invisible to reduce collateral (both in escalating the general situation, and in danger to themselves) and Loki being very still except to look between the two violently angry parties in the family (the two who usually instigate things, for that matter) is…soooooo revelatory, really, beyond any (admittedly funny) joke here.
