I’m on tumblr all the time and at this point I honestly have no idea the difference between bi and pan.  Every time I see a post about it, there are fifteen different people with different definitions and they’re all extremely angry about it.

People who are bi tend to think of only male and female and are interested in both. In most cases they have a poly relationships to compensate for the fact that they like both. Most, but not all.

People who are pan like myself, like any ONE person based on personality. There is no gender recognition for sexual attraction. Whether male, female, eunuch, hermaphrodite, trans, whatever. There are some bi people who don’t realize what Pan really is and some don’t realize that they are actually pan, not bi. Because it is a fairly new term that is being used more commonly. I was once under the impression that I was bi, but the definition didn’t quite fit me because of the whole gender thing. After going to our local GLBT center, they kinda helped me figure out who I am and what I can identify myself as since I was a bit confused. I don’t care what you are, I care about who you are.

That's how I've always understood the difference.  Bi meaning two means two genders, pan meaning all just means everyone.  Makes a lot of sense to me.  I guess the posts I saw the other day were just misguided tumblr SJ people, because they were basically using that definition of pan for bi, which seemed to me to make the words a little redundant.

Pretty sure bi is defined as actively being attracted to both genders and pan is more where it's not about gender and you're just attracted to who you're attracted to. That's my understanding of it anyway lol

See that's what I thought, and that makes sense. But then I've seen posts where bi people say they're attracted to people regardless of gender, which is confusing again.
