walking out of your classroom, you head towards the break room to grab your lunch. the halls are pretty much empty for the lunch period, the only sound you can hear is someone mumbling something in the teacher’s-only bathroom. you narrow your eyes as you notice the door is still wide open.
inside of the bathroom stands your classroom neighbor, sugawara. he is leaning over the sink with his face close to the mirror. you can just barely make out the words 'really?... ridiculous... oh wow'. you bite your lip and head over to the bathroom, arms crossed in front of your chest.
"uh sugawara? everything okay in here?" you tap your thumb against your upper arm, standing slightly on your toes.
he turns around for a split second, immediately turning back towards the mirror. you could just barely see some marks on his face, mostly around his mouth. "uh- yeah everything's okay," he shakes his head, clearly feeling embarrassed about whatever is ailing him.
"sugawara, it's okay, i can help," you say in a gentler voice, accidentally talking to him like he's a toddler who needs some emotional maturity, "i won't laugh if it's embarrassing, i promise."
biting the bullet, his shoulders drop, turning around to look at you. on his face is a drawn on mustache and a monocle. they're thick, drawn with multiple colors and thickness of markers. you raise your hand up to your mouth, covering it to make sure that he can't see the rising smile on your face.
he shakes his head, pursing his lips as soon as he can see you almost laughing, "what? is there something on my face?"
sugawara's voice is sarcastic in tone, his face falling in ultimate defeat. you remove your hand and bite your lip to stop from smiling anymore, "...i'm sorry- uh yeah, mmh i am sorry."
"let me help you as an apology for going back on my word," you finally say without an ounce of light snickering; your smile turning into an over-exaggerated frown as you can clearly see the shame written on his face.
opening up the old closet next to the bathroom and grabbing a washcloth, you try rinsing it off and rubbing it against his cheek. however, with every swipe of the cloth, your eyes grow a little wider. nothing is coming off, your smile starts falling, “suga- uh what type of marker did your students use?”
“well sharpie, but the washable kind!”
“are you positive? because it’s definitely not washing off…”
