۶ৎ your love was supposed to last for an eternity. but apparently, that eternity only lasted until she showed up again.
“how’d we get here, hanta?” you were frustrated. frustrated with how the so-called love of your life couldn’t answer any of your questions, and frustrated with how neither of you could bear to look each other in the eye.
it’s disheartening how your shared apartment had never felt colder. the sun had set hours ago, and the air conditioning made you miss the warmth of hanta’s embrace even more. his phone hadn’t stopped ringing since your conversation started, and hanta knew it was starting to get on your nerves.
“I really don’t know what else you want me to say, darling.” he exhales as he declines the call for the seventh time. hanta rubs his hands over his face, as if he were even more tired than you were.
“don’t you dare ‘darling’ me. only hanta gets to call me that, and you know it.” his phone was starting to ring again. you stand up from your seat on the couch and continue packing your things. all you saw was red as you shoved skincare products hanta had bought you for your third anniversary a month ago into the bag you pulled out from the closet just earlier. your eyes got even blurrier as you heard hanta stand up and start walking toward you. he didn’t even bother to decline the call anymore.
“I'm still your hanta, y/n. nothing has changed.” he wraps his arms around you, and it took everything in you not to turn around and slap him right then and there.
“admitting that you miss a past lover means nothing to you? how would you feel if I said that about bakugou?” you turn around and push him away. he was starting to get too close for comfort, and you didn’t think that could be good for either of you, given the situation.
his eyes widened, and you could tell hanta was starting to see red too. he turned to grab his phone and end another incoming call. who the hell could be so excited to talk to him right now? though you knew you didn’t really need an answer to that question. he breathes out another sigh as he takes a seat on the couch. hanta looks back up at you, the warmth and love in his gaze now completely gone.
“you and I both know that’s different. mina was a high school fling, for god’s sake. bakugou loved you more than his career.”
“a high school fling that took you years to move on from? a high school fling that you introduced to your whole family? you’re not fooling anyone, hanta. and the difference between us is that I actually love my current spouse.” you turn back around to continue packing your things, trying to stop yourself from getting even more frustrated.
“she comes waltzing back from a mission abroad and all of a sudden I'm an afterthought to you?” hanta’s phone is ringing again.
“just because she now has all the free time in the world, she’s bringing you lunch at work every day? and you didn’t even bother to hide how giddy you were every time you bought her a drink whenever we’re out with friends.” you hear hanta decline the call.
“and don’t even get me started on the way you two look at each other. you’re practically gonna burn through each other’s skulls at this point.” hanta stands from his seat on the couch just as you finish packing your things.
“you know, izuku kept telling me about—” you turn around mid-rant to look hanta in the eye. he was standing beside your apartment door, holding it open.
“I’m tired. and I know you are too.” he sighs and leans against the door. “if you’re intent on leaving, be my guest. I don't have the right to stop you from doing what you want.” now you were even more upset than when the conversation first started.
“you’re right. you don’t have the right to stop me from doing what I want, but I sure as hell know that you have the right to keep loving me if you’re true to your word. you have the right to tell me that it’ll be okay and that none of what I’m thinking is true.” you swing your bag over your shoulder and start walking to the door.
you stop right in front of hanta and take his hand to hold.
“if you really loved me, you’d stop me from leaving. please.” that last part came out as a whisper. you were too weak to beg hanta to do anything. to your dismay, he pulls his hand away and opens the door even wider.
“I'm sorry.” he mumbles, and you hear his phone start to ring again. just as you felt tears form in your eyes, you turned to the door and stepped outside.
“I love you. but not enough to make you pick between me and another girl.” you continue walking and don’t even bother to look back. everything happened so fast, looking back would only break you more. you hear the door shut behind you, and you could feel hanta’s hesitation to close it from a mile away.
hanta walks back into the apartment and picks up his phone from the couch. he finally answers the call that had been ringing all night.
“mina? hey. yeah, of course i’m free tonight.”
“alright, I'll see you later. bye.”
hanta sighs and looks over to the dining table, where a flower-filled vase was placed. he gave you those flowers a few days ago, “just because.” to his surprise, they were already starting to rot. and he could tell that you brought all the warmth of the apartment with you when you left.
