FaceTime - a LDR drabble

5:30am; five hours since you last checked. 

You don’t want to leave, to return to your cold and empty room, his voice a distant memory. You want to stay in this haven, his warm voice reaching out and caressing you, spreading warmth throughout your heart. 

You say goodnight, holding tightly onto the vowels, your heart squeezing as he responds. 700 miles apart and yet your love soars through the pixelated image. There’s a minor pause, in which you hesitate. His eyes flicker to your lips. Your heart aches to touch him, to hold him. I love you. Three words, eager to crawl out. But instead you swallow them and hover your thumb over the red button. Only six weeks to go, you tell yourself.

Hanging up, you feel empty again. An all too familiar feeling. You wish you could call back, to see his face once more; to feel his voice wrap around you like a warm embrace. But instead you stare into empty space, wondering if he’s doing the same. You wait for sleep to take you, for the slow hours to pass by and the night to return, so you can hear his voice again.
