The Jain Temples of Azimganj, West Bengal, India
Sam Dalrymple wrote : There were around 100 Jain families in the area, and 14 incredible Jain Temples were built along the banks of the river. Pictured here are Shri Sambhavnathji Jinalay and Shri Neminath Bhagwan Jinalay These banking families helped tranform Bengal into an economic powerhouse in the 1700s- 5% of the world economy.
That’s larger than Japan’s share of the world economy today. The standard of living was higher than in most of Europe and a recession here had the power to destabilise economies as far away as Mexico. The most prominent banking family - the Jagat Seths- were ironically responsible for the drain if Bengal’s wealth as well.
This family were the first big funders of the British East India Company, bankrolling Lord Clive’s conquest of Bengal Most of these families remained in Murshidabad until the 1960s. However their wealth made them the target of Naxal revolutionaries.
The two temples here were both attacked, and had the precious stones plucked from the interiors. Most of the merchant families fled the region, taking their wealth to Calcutta and Gujarat. Only now, since the restoration of @barikothi are some families returning to restore their heritage, and preserve it for the next generation.
