Interview: Copeland Talks About Reasons For The Breakup, Reformation, Their Approach To 'Ixora'

When indie/alternative rock innovators Copeland announced they’d be calling it quits in 2010, it was a move that seemed to blindside their fan base in a major way. The band’s heartfelt lyrics and creative, genuine approach to their music has been a massive selling point since their inception in 2001. Fortunately for fans, in 2014 the band began working together again on a new album, which eventually turned into Ixora, one of the best albums of the year. With the incredible momentum the band has built in the time since that album’s release, they are now set for one of their biggest tours yet, opening for Paramore on their Writing The Future tour. In this chat with guitarist Bryan Laurenson, he discusses the reason for the band’s breakup, their reformation, as well as their approach to Ixora. Read the full interview here.

Interview with Aaron Marsh of Copeland. I definitely recommend their new album Ixora. This was a great interview that gave me a peek into the mind of great musician and producer. My favorite quote:

I think it just happens when you just write stuff in a certain period of time, you know, there’s no real other way to explain, it’s the same guys, same studio, same era, you know what I mean, and I think that’s what kind of gives it its cohesiveness. Really, the trick for me actually, is not making stuff sound cohesive but it’s making it sound varied because if I’m not careful, I’ll just make every song sound kind of the same. So it’s more difficult for me to push stuff in other directions. A lot of times when the same person writes a song or writes ten songs, a lot of them will be the same, or really similar. You kind of have your melodic tricks that you gravitate towards and everyone has their chord progressions and their keys that they feel comfortable writing in. So a lot of what I feel, as a producer, is just like trying to find ways to push songs apart to give the record interest. So, I mean, hopefully it’s interesting enough.
