This wednesday, July 31st, 2013 sees the release of the Omnibus collection of my favorite run in comics of all time. Grant Morrison’s Animal Man. 

If you are like me you’re going to want to own this beautiful edition of the story even though you’ve read the paperbacks countless times. If you are not like me then you might not have read this run in any form, and I will recommend you wholeheartedly pick this book up.

The story focuses on Buddy Baker, aka Animal Man. He’s a C-List superhero with the power to adapt abilities from other animals. Currently he’s stopped focusing on the whole superhero gig and wants to spend time with his family, but things can never be that simple. Strange occurrences begin to happen around Buddy and his family as he tangles with various heroes and villains such as B’Wana Beast, Vixen, and Psycho Pirate. The story twists and turns before reaching its final pages, which give a reveal that has been praised as one of the best moments in any comic. 

If you’re a fan of Morrison then you owe it to yourself to own this volume, especially if you haven’t read this story yet. It really paves the way for many elements and storytelling techniques that will resonate throughout the rest of his work. 

The book collects issues #1-26 of Animal Man Vol. 1 as well as material from Secret Origins #39. The cover price is $75.00 but instocktrades.com will have the book listed for $37.50 (from later today until next Tuesday, after which the price will rise to $41.25
