Okay so this post is a continuation of this conversation and the title might be misleading, but here’s my effort to fanwank my way through Mara’s dresses in the comics and try to say something about the Imperial court and Mara. I will be focusing on the Emperor’s Hand comics. 

I wonder if @joysweeper has any thoughts on fashion in the Imperial court through the comics. You have a wider view than I do for that context.

Likewise I believe @jedimordsith recently reread Children of the Jedi, so that novel might add more to what the Imperial court could have been like. I hardly remember the Roganda Ismaren parts.

Luke's probably the best thing about TLJ. Mark Hamill knocks it out of the park and I loved the character more than ever. I need more time to completely process it all, but he goes on a journey that (I think) makes sense and actually is true to his character. Story telling is about conflict; sometimes that works by breaking down a character so we can see them put back together.

Thoughts on TLJ and Mara Jade

OK, so I’ve been off tumblr for a while, only occasionally checking in, because bluntly I got a bit tired of the bickering around certain issues and ships etc. I’d hoped that TLJ would put that to bed, but well, fandom drama never ends, does it? ANYWAY. I have now seen TLJ, and I have thoughts relevant to this blog for the first time in ages, so yay! a post. Under the cut because while I’m not saying anything properly spoilery for the film, if you are invested in certain issues, it might feel too much for you... 

Like seriously, turn away now if you’re trying to go in really blind. So, one of the interesting things about TLJ is that, now that we know more about Luke’s backstory over the last 30 years, and that part of the saga is now therefore open to new stories being made, I can’t actually see any reason why Mara Jade couldn’t be brought back. If they wanted to, that is - as story group folk keep saying, it really depends if anyone wants to tell a story about her and succeeds at pitching it to the story group. There is plenty of space for her to fit in though, relatively unchanged in terms of her pre-Skywalker romance story. And I can’t even see why she couldn’t, hypothetically, have a romance with him - it would just mean she either a) dies when his academy is destroyed or b) decides ‘sod the Jedi’ and has gone her own way at some point.

I think my point is - TLJ finally takes the pressure off. Thank goodness. I’m not holding my breath that Lucasfilm will actually use her, but I AM hoping this will now spark a whole bunch of wonderful fanfics that see her wonderfully in this context :)

Meanwhile... I was really amused to discover that my companions watching the film, (all male and oblivious to shipping wars and fandom politics) all came out of the film believing Rey’s parentage STILL isn’t resolved by the film. Which is hilarious. Given the film makers have said the film does resolve the issue, I’m inclined to take what we’re told in the film at face value, but just a heads up that if they thought that way, there is little chance that fandom is just going to accept the answer given either...

The term “Emperor’s Hand” is canon again. Should Mara Jade follow? (I’m not so sure.)

Between this and Grand Admiral Thrawn, it sure seems like a lot of classic Legends are showing up on Star Wars Rebels. But importing Mara into the new canon would a lot more complicated than anything they've done yet.

The best explanation for why bring Mara back is so tricky.

FWIW, by baseline requirements to be happy with her being reintroduced would be 1) that it's true to her personality traits (the snark, the loyalty and principles, the self-sufficiency and general bass-assery) and 2) some kind of interpretation that takes in the ex-imperial, subsequent smuggler with unrealised force potential. As I was never 100% happy with her interpretation in Legends beyond the Thrawn trilogy, I'm very happy to see a reinterpretation or completely new story for her. Or not at all if there's no way to fit her in and do it right.
