So after some urging from my friend, [username withheld], I decided it was time to create an OC. Welp... here she is! I think she'd be a good fit for Hetalia: Axis Powers, but not as a country.

But wait, isn't that what Hetalia's supposed to be about?

She's definitely human, but gets along well with the countries. (Before anyone says, "Well that doesn't make sense!" and blah blah, just think of Jeanne d'Arc. She was human )

But she was also a historical figure. A pretty prominent one, at that.

Last time I checked, your OC isn't a prominent historical figure.

Profile: Name: Nana Taylor Personality: She is an art prodigy, especially when it comes to drawing and singing.

She's also very cheerful, and is naive when it comes to certain things (like love~).

If this is foreshadowing for slashing herself with nations, I'm going to set myself on fire.

However, she can be very mature and serious when you least expect it, and she is very focused when it comes to her artwork.  Life Story: Nana was born as an only child to two kind and loving parents. Both of her parents worked as painters for an art gallery which they also owned.

Well, at least her backstory is logi--

When Nana was six, both of her parents were murdered in their home during a robbery by an unknown man.

So what you're saying is she's Batman.

Soon after, Nana went to live with her grandparents in the apartment above their small store in another city. Nana's grandfather was somewhat strict, and taught Nana to become more independent.

Those seem to contradict one another.

Her grandmother acted as more of an older sister to Nana as she was quite immature, and loved to have fun. At age 18, Nana moved back to her hometown with the intention of finding her parents' murderer. One day, while attempting to get a job painting portraits for a government-owned building, she runs into some of the countries.

But wouldn't she just think he's a regular guy?

She soon becomes friends with a majority of the countries due to her innocent attitude and kindness towards everyone she meets.

That doesn't make sense, how did we go from "Hi, I ran into you, random government worker" to "I AM BEST FRIENDS WITH EVERY NATION" in half a line?

However, for the time-being, she has no idea that these countries are actually countries, and instead thinks they're regular people. 

Oh, okay. That makes sense. But I still don't think she'd be friends with all of the nations. Probably just whoever she ran into.

And the "for the time-being" part is a little concerning.

Fun Facts: -She has a Saint Bernard named Bosco that follows her everywhere, and serves as her closest friend. -Her grandfather taught her self-defense so she can handle herself pretty well. -She hates when people point out her short height. -When she's not with her friends, she spends her days drawing people as they walk by. -Although she's much more talented at singing, she continues painting and drawing as it makes her feel closer to her parents. -She (at first) tells no one of her past as she doesn't want to be pitied by others.  -She is constantly smiling, because she's afraid that if she ever stops, she won't be able to smile ever again. Nana- The poor excuse of a human OC

Honestly, I like the idea of her meeting a nation-tan and becoming acquaintances, but being friends with ALL the nation-tans is overdoing it. Her backstory has tragedy for the sake of tragedy, and she needs to be ironed out as a character.

Overall, she's kind of a lazy character, but she could be worse.

Here’s my OC which personifies Cheung Chau, an island belonging to Hong Kong. I’ve tried to keep all her personality and quirks logical for the place she personifies. Things in brackets like this [ ] explain why I chose that.

You might see the term ‘Hakka’ come up a lot. The Hakka, Hoklo, Tanka, Punti and the Hundred Yue people make up most of the population of Cheung Chau, but the Hakka people have more information on them, so I’m using the Hakka people as a basis. I may switch around at times, though, since I want to balance out the cultures.

Name: Chin Ping An [Chin is the Hakka variation of Chan, a common surname found in Hong Kong. Ping An means peace in Chinese, referring to what is usually written on the buns in the Bun Festival.]

Age: In all technicality if you’re asking about the very first people who lived here (perhaps not settled) then she’s 7000 years old.

I would probably make her age based on something having to do with the permanent settlement as it exists today, if that makes sense.

Gender: Female

Appearance: (Photo above) It is obvious that she is blood related to Hong Kong, as she appears to look a lot like him. Her hair reaches a little further than her shoulders and some of it are tied into her two buns. [The buns have a double meaning: 1-To show her Chinese ancestry, 2-Because of the Bun Festival.] She wears a traditional Hakka outfit. [There was an option to do the traditional outfit of the Tanka people, but since the Tanka outfit is much more plain, I stuck with the Hakka.]

You might want to depict her wearing both outfits, to represent that she represents both people, and not just one ethnic group.

Personality and Interests: Cheung Chau is an optimistic girl who is kind, sweet and caring. [Referring to her tourist industry] Fishing is one of her major hobbies and is one of her jobs too. [Referring to her fishing industry] Though she spends more and more time on land, she loves the ocean, which she can smell no matter where she is at home. [Referring to the fact that she’s an island] She also loves making buns when the Bun Festival gets nearer. [Referring to the annual Bun Festival]

You keep on referencing the Bun Festival, but you haven't quite explained it. You might want to explain what it is earlier on in the profile, because right now, it's a little confusing and vague.

Cheung Chau is quite agile as well. [Referring to bun snatching and the Parade of Floats]

Quirks and Fears:

~ Cheung Chau has a fear of large vehicles on land, due to having narrow streets that normal cars cannot get through. They have specially designed mini versions of fire engines, ambulances and police cars etc. 

~ The subject of death and/or suicide is very sensitive to her. Due to a trend of suicide cases that happened on her island, she doesn’t like mentioning about them. 

~ She is very protective of her people. Very, very protective. In 1662 to 1669, China forced her to evacuate her island and caused lots of hardships for her people.

Relationships: 

~ Hong Kong: Hong Kong is Cheung Chau’s brother. Cheung Chau is part of Hong Kong as well.

~ China: Technically belongs to China as Hong Kong does, but there could be potential resentment due to the 1662-1992 incidents but she practices his traditional culture, so we don’t know.

~ England: Cheung Chau was leased to the UK along with Hong Kong as well, though she lived on a junk back then. 

These are a little scant. I'd probably go more into them. I like the mention of history in the China section, though.

Miscellaneous Information: 

~ Cheung Chau has 6 temples dedicated to gods in Chinese myths and legends. She worships them as well. 

~ She absolutely love love love LOVES windsurfing. She’s very proud of Lee Lai Shan, who won Hong Kong’s first and last Olympic medal (due to political reasons, but let’s not touch on that subject too much).

As I said earlier, you don't explain the Bun Festival, nor its significance to the area, so it's confusing. And while your OC obviously has been researched, I would give a unified historical biography of her, since she is currently lacking that.

Overall, a good start, I'd say.

I'd very much like it if you could critique my New York OC c: I think I have a lot of work to do still, but I'd like your opinion before I get too far.

Representation of - New York (state)

Physical age – Around 13

Human name – Mia Jones [Mia is one of the most popular names in NY, then Jones for being Alfred’s daughter]

Makes sense so far.

About – She speaks English, and also speaks a little Spanish (although she’s not fluent) [14% of NY’s population speak Spanish, while 14.1% speak other languages].

I'm glad she isn't incredibly fluent in every language, considering she's not New York City. This is looking well, so far.

She’s the 27th largest state and the 3rd most populous. As opposed to NYC’s hyper city atmosphere, most of NY’s place is more calm and natural [Most of NY’s land is covered by nature (forests, mountains, rivers, lakes, etc.)]. She has the largest state park in the US [Adirondack Park], which she’s pretty proud of. She enjoys the water somewhat [NY has several water borders, and is the only state to border both the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean].

Good, good. I'm glad you're making a distinction between the majority of New York and New York City. While you should incorporate some aspects of the city into her, making sure that she is not overwhelmed by the identity of the city is very good.

She enjoys a variety of foods, including apples, milk, potatoes, maple syrup, cabbage, grapes, etc. [NY is a major agricultural producer, and the foods I listed were foods NY ranks in the top 5 for within the states]. She enjoys several sports [her sport teams].

Appearance – NY has brown hair that hangs in two pigtails over her shoulders. The pigtails are held in place with hair bands that look like the Dutch flag [To represent the time she spent as a Dutch colony].

Her hair is fine as is, but I don't like the idea of you using it to represent her relationship with the Netherlands, considering she is not currently still part of the Netherlands.

Two curls come up from her pigtails. One represents Adirondack Park [It’s a really big park, I had to include it somewhere .-.] and the other represents Catskill park. She has slightly darkish skin [Referring to that 17.6% of NY’s population is Hispanic/Latino when it comes to racial makeup, as well as 15.8% of her population being African American in terms of ancestry. She’s also home to the largest African American population as well as the largest Puerto Rican, Dominican and Jamaican American population in the US.]. She wears a white T-shirt with a red stripe across it, and a blue open t-shirt jacket thing. She wears jean shorts and red converse as well.

History – Before she was colonized, NY was occupied by Algonquins and Iroquois natives. One of Netherlands’ explorers [Henry Hudson] stumbled upon her looking for the Northwest passage (Although France stumbled upon her first). When he returned, news of his findings quickly spread, and Dutch merchants started exploring her coast for profitable fur trade. Trading posts with the Native Americans there soon formed the colony of New Netherlands, which was the house that NY ended up moving into along with some of her states [I’m not quite sure how to Hetalia-inize a colony, but I’d think it’d be the same way as the Soviet Union was a house].

There have been different interpretations of colonies in Hetalia fanon, although in the series, I think Alfred lived some ways away from Arthur when he was a colony.

As for the history, this is good, so far, but you should add more to her history than her early history.

Relationships.

Canada – She’s good friends with him for several reasons: They’re neighbors [share an international border], they share Niagara Falls, and they are major economic partners.

America - Her father. He seems to favor her sister [NYC] over her, but she doesn’t let this get to her.

Netherlands/Holland – Her first father/caretaker. He originally owned her and some of her siblings [New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, and part of  Pennsylvania and Rhode Island] in a house called New Netherlands, but England took control of it in 1664.

Massachusetts– A fellow state, and therefore her technical brother. They get along well enough, with the exception of sports, which they are extreme rivals in [Red Sox vs. Yankees].

England - He took her and her siblings in New Netherlands in 1664. She and her siblings [13 colonies] were under his care until the American Revolution.

I think these relations are pretty good, for what you have.

I know I definitely need more work to make this OC better. One of the things I found hard to make into a character trait was her exports; it's a very important part of NY but I can't find a way to fit it into the OC >.> I'd very much like your opinion on how to make her better. Thanks in advance~

For exports, I'd say those would be things that she makes or industries that she works in, and sells to the rest of the world. I don't know if that's what you're asking for, exactly, but that's probably what you should do.

As for this entire OC, I like what you have so far, you just need to refine some aspects of it. But overall, she's a very good OC. I'd continue on the path you're going right now, and you should be fine.

As someone who's from Wales can I say how annoyed I am by some of the OCs I've seen? Welsh history is different to that of England and the rest of the UK except for the more modern history. Our traditional clothing is different and so is our food. Our culture is different to the rest of the UK and St David's Day (Dydd Gŵyl Dewi) is on the 1st March, NOT April. Also please stop making it seem like Wales hates everyone. We welcome anyone here. Kthanxbai. (Keep up the good work with the blog btw)

Some Sicily OC advice

There are some groups in Sicily who want the region to be indipedent if I remember correctly… but they are pretty minor in the bigger picture so making a Sicily OC who wants to become indipendent is dumb idea.

Also Sicily is in a terrible economical state even with the mafia. And loathing all the italians seems pretty dumb…shouldn’t she just loathe North Italians?? Damn fuck this shit!

Oh also, “The Greece of Italy” doesn’t exist as a term. The relationship between Sicily and Greece was strong: once Sicily was the “Magna Grecia” (literalli “Bigger Greece”, as in more beuatiful and radiant) and was another part of Greece, but I’ve never heard of this GREECE OF ITALY THING, only stuff like “Eh the nature in Sicily is very similar to Greece’s lol”.

… and really, to add more things… why is she so cultural? Sicilians, like most Italians, don’t give a shit about their artistic heritage anyway :/ that OC [note: which has since been removed] makes no fucking sense.

Thank you for this advice. I disagree about the "cultural" part, because I feel that all nations should be pretty interested in art and music and literature, just because cultures beget cultural things. However, this is all very helpful for Sicily OC creators.

About that Sicily OC... My grandmother is Sicilian, with her father being direct from Sicily, and from the stories I've heard of him and his mother and father, they are nothing like that.

My great-great-grandfather Antonio was credited with building a Catholic church, and was hard working and just wanted to support his family like many other Sicilians.

And the thing were she hates the Vargas family- my grandmother has always told me be careful about telling people from Italy you're Sicilian, because not all of them like Sicilians very much (I'm not sure if it's because of the mafia originating there or what), but there's not some giant hatred. Even so, she wouldn't hate her family. There's a value of family in Italian and Sicilian culture.

Sorry, but that whole deal bothered me a lot, just like inaccurate Scotland OCs, because my family is mostly from Sicily and Scotland, and even if you don't live there, it's kind of offensive... You should really keep that in mind guys

((I found a simply awful Cambodia OC, and being from that country I took offense. I'd like to hear your take on her and her creator.

Also, just a heads up: she [the creator] ships this OC with three countries, Russia[link withheld], Croatia[link withheld], and the Netherlands[link withheld].

The creator doesn't have any information on Cambodia except that her explanation for the kung-fu outfit is that Cambodia was influenced by mainly China. :|

I don't see why this OC is shipped with Russia, the Netherlands, and Croatia, considering that the only semi-reasonable thing I can see is Russia, and even then, those relations would be incredibly strained, to say the least.

As for this OC, her incredible lack of information and her blatant self-insert status just shows why she's bad. And honestly, I don't see why she's wearing what looks to be a qipao-styled shirt, because even if there is Chinese influence in Cambodia, it would make more sense for her to be wearing Cambodian traditional wear, instead of something traditionally Chinese.

Overall, this OC wasn't researched or looked into further than "Hey, Cambodia exists!" and needs a giant overhaul before she can be considered a good OC.

As for this OC, I think it's obvious why it's bad. She's a pink-haired neko girl who doesn't personify a nation, and was shipped with Japan for the sole sake of shipping her with Japan.

I'm not even sure that this OC is even a nation-tan, more than it is a multifandom/general OC created by the OC creator.

Which is only slightly comforting, all things considered.

Facts: One skirmish during ww2 was fought there. When France fell in 1940 the local governmental of Saint Perrier Miquelon supported Vichy. Which the people,Degaulle and the Free French did not approve of. So they along with the local people seized the lsland and made sure it was not under Vichy country. This did ruin the trust that FDR had for Degaulle.

Well, you've obviously done research, and I know this is still under construction, but this seems very bare-bones to me. I'd add a history section/unified biography, rather than just a facts section.

As for his fears of having another country take over, I don't think he needs to have those fears anymore, considering the Age of Imperialism has been over for a while.

Overall, this OC isn't bad, it just needs improvement and development, which I'm sure you will provide as you continue to work on this OC.

Ciao. My name is Elena. I represent the Vatican City.

Well, at least Elena is used in Italy, so it's not awful. Not yet.

I'd say: Because the OC creator wanted to have a Hetalia OC that could hang out with the two Italies, that's why you are the Vatican City.

I have two fratellos, but I mostly lived with Spain and Romano. Italy lived with Austria. I love playing music and making others happy. Even Spain. He seems sad sometimes. 

Wouldn't she have held some good power a few centuries back, though because of how much power the Pope and the Roman Catholic church had?

Are we not going to mention that?

Elena has curly dark brown hair with a curl sticking out. She has brown eyes and pale skin. She has a strong sense of justice and loyalty, as well as bravery, which all three combined inspired her to work as a police officer.

Working in the Vatican.

Which is what she represents.

And she does at the physical age of 16. Elena tries to enjoy life to the fullest and keep everyone happy. Unless they're phyco cuzs she doesn't know how to deal with them.

Considering that the Catholic church does a lot of outreach, and among the things they do is help those with mental illnesses, I think it's hypocritical of her to be acting in such a way. And considering that unlike some sects of Christianity, who view mental illness as a manifestation of sin, the Catholic church isn't against treatment for mental illnesses.

So you just missed the target entirely, OC creator.

I don't understand why this OC is so lacking. She doesn't have much historical data, and really, she doesn't seem a good personification of the Vatican City. She has nothing to do with the Vatican, and is completely secular, the way I see it.

This OC needs to be revamped from the ground up, because it makes no sense for a personification of the Vatican City to be like this.

As the fan of the anime itself. I'm quite outraged.

Waitwaitwait. Why is she an Einzbern? Einzbern family come from Europe. They have nothing to do with Fuyuki City except for creation of the Grail for Holy Grail War.

I don't watch Fate/Stay Night, but if Fuyuki City is a Japanese city (as it sounds to be) then she should probably have a Japanese name, yes.

Appearance:

...She is really faceclaiming Homura. Homura have long black hair and deep purple eyes.

Well, that's usually the point of a faceclaim, from what I've found, but typically, people faceclaim celebrities, and I feel like the OC creator should have more creativity than to just take a character from another anime and shove her into another anime. She should at least have some differences.

And, the Einzberns are supposed to have white hair and red eyes because they're homunculus. They are not born, but instead, created.

Now she's a homunculus and she's personifying a CITY?

Being stranded on the streets of Fuyuki, she meet kiku, who understands her story, and gives her a house so she can live peacefully.

Such heroes for examples are King Arthur as Saber in Fifth War, Alexander the Great as Rider from Fourth War, or Robin Hood as Archer from Fate/Extra game. So I was wondering through the wide wide internet looking for if any decent Hetalia fan fiction on Central America more specifically Honduras. And I stumbled upon a little gem. A horribly marred, should have never seen the light of day, gem.  It was a basically, make Americas love child with a random country they know noting about, in this case it was Honduras. And make this love child nothing like either parent, completely made up, disregard historical relationships and make them speak languages they would not know, and interact and fall in love with characters that have nothing to do with them! 

Yeah, that's...typically how most bad Hetalia OCs are, to be honest. People make the characters before choosing the area, more often than not.

The worst part was that Honduras was just mentioned as a mom. Who abandoned her child I think a nation could reproduce they wouldn't abandon their children. Either for emotional reasons or geopolitical they would't just say "here America I don't want our grotesquely inaccurate baby you keep it."

Maybe they would have been better of throwing it in the jungle to live and communicate with the animals. Ive read they sometimes come back. Im not sure how the fanfiction submission works. But if there are any mistakes Ill be more than happy to fix them. It is my first time.

I honestly don't know what this OC is supposed to personify. Is it California? If so, I understand why she would dress with more light clothing, because it's typically warm in California, but why does she have a tattoo of a diamond on her back?

I've tried looking into it, and Mana, from what I've found is a feminine name mostly in Japan, and I don't think it's used very often outside of Japan. As for the structure of her name, I'll admit, I don't know very much about middle names in nations that use Arabic, but I do feel like this is incorrect. If anyone wants to correct me on that or provide a guide for names in nations that use Arabic, I'd very much appreciate it.

Anyways, my OC is Okinawa! Yes, the Okinawan Prefecture. Hopefully it won't be too bad...

Name: Kana Kaneshiro 

Why this Name: Kana is a name used in an Okinawan Song, and so I thought I should use it. The last name is a "Common" last name thing I looked up on

Those seem relatively accurate. The only thing I'd say is that in East Asian naming systems, the last names come first, but that's not as big a deal, because you recognise the last and first names. Just keep that in mind when you're looking over this profile again.

Age in Appearance: 20

Why this Age: Japan looks young, like his mid twenties. So I thought I should make Kana a bit younger, but not too young. 20 seems pretty good to me actually...

I think you should mention her age, in comparison to Japan, through a historical standpoint. So, use the history of Japan and Okinawa to justify why she would be younger than Japan.

Appearance: Kana has Dark Brown, close to Black hair that reaches her chest, and is often tied in a high ponytail. She's a bit tan, seeing as how she lives in a Tropical Climate, and has Dark Brown eyes. She's around 5'5, and has a bit of muscle from working in the fields.

Why this Appearance: I'm actually born from Okinawa, and I had a Grandmother who worked in the Sugar Cane fields. Because of this, she was quite strong. The dark hair dark eyes thing is pretty obvious as to why, and the 5'5 is because Japanese people are quite short.

While this is good justification, I have to say, basing Hetalia characters off your own experience can open the door for basing things solely off your experience, and those might not be entirely accurate for the entire area. However, this doesn't seem that off, but I'd keep that in mind when you are revising this OC.

Personality: Kana reads the atmosphere like her boss, Japan, in order to make decisions accordingly. But that doesn't mean she's always like that. She has a feisty, fun, positive side to her, always smiling and trying her best to keep up. She's fairly wise, and often tries to at least make the right decision. 

Why this kind of Personality: Kana has a history with America and Japan, so I thought of making her a bit like both. She has America's positive attitude and Japan's reading the mood skills. 

You might want to use more of the culture of Okinawa and cultural attitudes to create her personality, rather than the personalities of two nations that have a history with her.

By the way, she's not their love child or anything. Heck, she isn't even related to them. Ha ha...

Short Biography: Kana was brought up by Japan and China, and served under them. When WWII came around, she stood by Japan's side, serving him only. But the war caused her to suffer greatly, and she felt betrayed by Japan for lying to her. America is the one who pulled her back to her feet and helped out, and she's grateful to him. Now, she lives peacefully, living on her Island.

Why this History: China obviously started Japan, so Kana should of been raised by them. When WWII came around, the Japanese people told the Okinawan's that Americans would kill them if they were caught. Thus, many people committed suicide, blowing themselves up or shoving their family off cliffs and then throwing themselves off too. But in truth, Americans were friendly and kind to them, surprising the Okinawans. After the war, Kana holds no grudges.

While you have some history here, I think you need to go deeper. You need to definitely talk more about specifics, and about her life pre-WWII, because that's an enormous amount of time that you're not talking about.

Relationships: China: Her starter, he's the one who brought her up. Other than that, they don't meet much. 

Japan: She's respectful to him, seeing as how he's her boss, but isn't really his Best Friend. They have more of a Boss and Worker relationship. But they do meet up time to time to just relax

America: She likes being around him, though he can be a bit obnoxious. But the two get along quite well, seeing as how Kana is grateful for America's kindess.

Why these Relationships: I tried my best to just get it straight to the point. It's bit scary writing these, because some people might get mad and say, Oh no, that's not right stupid! But hopefully these relationships are okay

These relationships should be based in history, and should be justified as such, much like in the "history" section. You need to add more information here.

Extra:

- Very Skilled at Karate (It originated from Okinawa)

- Likes low-salt foods

- Plays the Sashin (An Okinawa insturment)

- Her house is made from Concrete with Barred Windows  to deal with Regular Typhoons. One the roof is a Shisha, a Tiger/Dragon protector in Okinawa.

In general, your OC is a good start, much better a start than most people come to. My main issue is that you need to add more history and more cultural interpretations and justifications, because right now, you present points, but you don't actually tell us why your points are valid ones.

Overall, as is, she's an okay character. Not terrible, but not great. If you add historical and cultural information, however, that should change things for the better.

I can see Jamaica and England, but I don't understand why she's related to Cuba. The Caiman Islands don't exactly have much evidence for having peoples related to the native peoples of Cuba on them, and the only reason I can see her being related to Cuba is because people from Cuba often end up in the Cayman Islands.

No, no. Let's not do that, please. There is no reason for her to be schizoaffective, and considering that she's seven years old, even if she were to have it, it wouldn't likely be diagnosed yet.

Not to mention, even if she were schizoaffective, that wouldn't let her "see" the mythical creatures that Arthur sees. Even if we are working with the idea that Arthur is hallucinating, as well, people with similar mental illnesses don't share exact hallucinations.

Well, technically, she was discovered by Columbus, and was settled by other peoples before being completely taken by Arthur.

She is also Jamaica's little sister. She has a blue iguana named Drake. Sadly her only language is English. When Jamaica became independent Cayman still wanted to stay under England ownership. After that she has been living back and forth between Jamaica and England. Cayman has a scar on the back of her leg from the hurricane of 32'.

Not as bad as a tattoo. Scars work better than other markings, but it needs to be something relatively small, and there needs to be an acknowledgement of the horrors of what happened.

So I'd say you should mention that.

While I can see you did some research, you need to do more research, add more history and culture to your profile, and remove the bit about her having schizoaffective disorder. It's in poor taste, and inaccurate, considering that those with schizoaffective disorder aren't generally diagnosed until thirteen, if not later.

So yes, it's a start. But you need to do a lot more work before she'll be a great OC.
