If we were to get our Character to make a girls team what would be the best way to make it work? Make more OCs for the girls team? Or have her fail to gather enough members and just hang out with the boy's team and Gou occasionally?

Both sounds completely fine to me, it really depends on where you want to go with your character(s). There's also the third option of teaming up with other OC creators to form a team.

I'nm laughing really hard at those OCs with names that mean stuff like 'water' or 'mermaid' or stuff like that because god damn who the hell would name their child like that? I mean, maybe if the OC's parents wanted them to be a professional swimmer that would make a little sense, but none of their backstories say anything like that and there are way too many OCs who JUST HAPPEN to have a a first name AND family name related to swimming.

Yes to all of this. As I said before, naming your child something like "Mermaid" just because you want her to become a pro-swimmer when she's older is like naming your child "Bird" because you want her to develop the ability to fly. Just because you have the name doesn't mean it's going to happen, both names and people don't work that way. Otherwise I would just change my name to "Billionaire McRich" and wait what happens.

Pet Peeve #3

Do not, under any circumstances, make your OC join the swim club as the 4th member. I feel the need to point this out again: This position is for Rei. If he doesn't join the club as the 4th member, he probably won't join the club AT ALL. The only reason why Nagisa was so keen on making him join was because they were pretty desperate, and all the struggles they are going through because of him are important for both the plot and character development, so don't just go and smash all this to little pieces by making your OC join before Rei. I DON'T CARE IF THEY JOIN AS 5th, 6th, or 342nd member. He/She just can't be the 4th member.

Dos and Don'ts of Writing Relationships.

hello there, I love your blog! Do you have any “don’t ‘s” when it comes to fictional relationships. I am writing a romantic relationship that was formed in an zombie apocalypse, any tips? - Anonymous

Hi, first of all thanks! 

I thought quite a bit about this and I think I’m going to give you a list of do’s and don’ts. Now take everything I say with a pinch of salt, remember this isn’t ALWAYS the case and I’m basing some of these from bad fanfiction…

Disclaimer: These are my opinions.

Dos.

Have instant physical attraction (if that’s your thing)

Have your characters get to know each other. 

Show the progression of the relationship.

Still mention other characters in your story.

Make the relationship realistic

Have arguments (no relationship is perfect)

Have things about the other person that annoys them (you left the seat up- AGAIN).

Don’ts.

Have them love each other instantly. It takes time to love each other and love grows as the relationship progresses. 

Have instant trust. (this may work for some, but I don’t think it’s realistic.)

Make the relationship perfect

Forget the other characters

Only focus on the physical attraction (unless it’s not about love)

Be sickly with their love. It turns me off, and I’m sure it turns others off.

Make them have sex every five minutes. 

I hope this helps, also keep in mind that if yours is set after a zombie apocalypse there may be very different reasons for your characters to get together than for most characters. So think of their reasons for wanting to be together. Are they clinging to the only person left? Forced together through circumstance?

ACTUALLY middle school or whatever you call it is called collège in France and it’s VERY misleading when we learn english, so if the suethor’s native language is french (or another language that has the same problem) it’s understandable!

Remember this chick? Riiight, it's Mizuko "the Seal of Iwatobi Swim club". The first two pictures are obviously screenshot edits, and seeing as all of the pictures in her gallery are traced I'm pretty sure the last one is too. (It reminds me of Senna from that Bleach movie for some reason.)

This time I put my Naruto's OC in the amazing universe of the anime Free! Iwatobi Swim Club

( I like it sooo much, there is so much fan service!! If you didn't see it, go! ) I tried to make her look like the style of the anime... I think I fail :/

Wait... Naruto OC? Oh great she's a Multiverse Sue. We're off to a great start here folks.

Mizu-chan was in the same swimming club as the 4 boys when they were younger.

Motherfucking WATER CHAN. We already have enough of those jfc

And of course she was in the same swimming club as the boys. Like everyone else and their dead mother.

She went to a boarding school for the college, cause her mother has been transfered to the north of Japan and Mizuko didn't want to go there. She stop swimming since, cause her boarding school don't have a pool, so she joined the soccer club.

Okay, her mom is alive and to be fair I have to admit it's a nice twist to give an OC a hobby besides swimming.

She enjoyed it,but not as much as the swimming club. While these college's years she miss her 4 friends of the swimming club, but she going on. She has made only true friend at her college, her name, Sakura Yusake.

Don't you usually go to High School BEFORE College? And when did she start college, at age 12? Or is it different in Japan? Because I don't think it is, so overall this backstory doesn't really make much sense...

Now she lives by herself in a small appart. Both are first year student at the Iwatobi High School.

So now she's in High School? Why? Oh I know, because fuck logic that's why.

At the end of the first week of class, she was going to give her request member of the soccer team when she meet Nagisa. She was so happy to see him again. He tells her that Mako-chan and Haru-chan are students here too and also tells her that they are starting a swimming club, she offers to be the fourth member, like that they can make the club official!

THIS RIGHT HERE PEOPLE IS WHAT MAKES THIS CHARACTER SO UNBEARABLE FOR ME

Not the "Mizu" name. Not the traced art. Not the illogical backstory. Noooo, it's the fact that she joins the swim club as the fourth member they so desperately needed, which completely undermines Rei and the role he played in making the club official. With someone voluntarily joining as their fourth member Nagisa would have had no reason to keep pestering Rei to join, and thus REI WOULD HAVE HAD NO REASON TO JOIN. THIS SUE IS COMPLETELY DESTROYING CANON AND THIS IS NEVER EVER ALRIGHT.

The next day, when Sakura-chan ask her if her request to the soccer team was accepted Mizuko tells her that she joined the new swimming club!

After Sakura-chan listened to her story, she ask if she can also join it. At first, Mizu-chan was surprised, but she was also very happy, the truth was that she was uncomfortable with the fact to be the only girl to swim in the club. She was very happy to swim with her old friends, but at the same time... she doesn't know how to explain it... she was uncomfortable to be so close with these boys, especially with Makoto and Haruka...

Oh lord do I smell a love triangle here? I hope not or I might have to jump off a cliff.

She is the captain of the team girls, since they are only two and that Sakura didn't want to be the captain, it was an easy decision. When Mizu-chan is serious, she can swim very fast, she has a great leadership and she is a kind person. Her animal emblem is a seal ^^, like Haru is a dolphin, Nagisa a penguin, etc...

Wow, what an outstanding personality! Such detail, I applaude you! And of course the Sue is the Captain of the girls team... Why would there even be the need for a seperate team for the girls? Especially with only two members when you can't even participate in swimming relays?

First things first...I'd like to see this Sue try to keep her hair underneath the swimming cap because gurl, that Rapunzel-esque hair ain't gonna fit the cap.

Name: Aichiyo Watanabe

Aichiyo is obviously a mashed-up of Ai and Chiyo and mashing up two names is soo obviously and totally cool. It's not like you'll get teased by kids throughout your entire childhood for it. *sarcasm*

Name Meaning: (First) Eternal Love, (last) Cross Boundary

Nicknames: Aichi, Ai-chan

OK, so she has a PREFECTURE nickname. It's not like people will call you Aichi Aichi when teasing and call you the walking Aichi Prefecture or anything. Noo, it's PERFECTLY fine to have a nickname that's the same name as a prefecture's.

Age: 17

Hobbies: Art, swimming

What she does to past time: Swim, draw, play her guitar, play with her cat Momo, listen to music and read

Likes: Sharks, art, music, ramen, sweets, swimming

Personality: Sarcastic, kind, pouty, shy at times, easily blushes around guys, sad, lonely.

As someone who's shy in real life, I don't talk the sarcastic language. Although some shy people do, majority of us don't. It just doesn't go with the flow.

Kids, repeat after me. Pouty is not a personality trait. POUTY IS NOT A MOTHERFUCKING PERSONALITY TRAIT.

Also, putting sad and lonely makes you to look like you're using this OC of yours as a pity-party bait.

Also, she wouldn't be 'blushing' at her abusive boyfriend. What kind of a sane human being would even BLUSH at someone abusing them?!

Crush: Rin Matsuoka

I've hit the bullseye.

Past: She's been a swimmer ever since she could swim, her parents love her very much and would do anything for her, she has never asked for more, except to swim. Also that shark's tooth was given to her as a present from Rin for her birthday when she was 10, and she has never taken it off, not once.

At least this one kept their OC's parents alive.

Oh great, GREAT, JUST GR8. Now the author decided that she should be 'Rin's kawaii childhood tomodachi' before Haruka and the others are. I bet she knew Rin through the swimming club. *colossal facepalm* If there's any big mistakes a OC can do while being created, it's meddling the four boys' friendship and being 'close friends before they met each other' or even being a part of the swimming-four circle of friends. It just breaks canon.

This Sue probably doesn't know the word 'itchiness' of wearing necklace or is even afraid of the chain getting rusty and getting tetanus from it.

Current Bio: She's in Samezuka Academy and has a boyfriend and swims everyday at the Academy, but, everytime she goes to school, she seems to have a new wound or bruise, because her boyfriend is very abusive but she thinks he'll change if she stays. 

FYI, Samezuka is an ALL-BOYS ACADEMY. With that Rapunzel-long-hair of yours, you wouldn't fit in. They would transfer you to Iwatobi instead! I bet this Sue is on the swimming team. The binding-chest crap doesn't work in this fandom.

And repeat after me, ABUSE IN ANY FORM IS NOT A COOL PLOT-DEVICE OR A GOOD CHARACTERISTIC PROGRESS TOOL. As someone who has friends and classmates who went through various type of abuse either it's from families or boyfriends, this is insulting and pisses me off. It's like she thinks that having an abusive boyfriend would make Rin to go Prince-Charming-Heroic-mode and save her during a beating. Rin would care less about this Sue.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY (Abuse victims) DO ONCE THEY FOUND OUT THAT THEIR BOYFRIENDS ARE ABUSIVE?! They DUMP and LEFT them by the time they start to show hostility towards them and in their relationship. THIS IS NOT A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP EITHER, SO DON'T start a trend of unhealthy relationships in Free! And if their families (who luckily aren't abusive) knew about their kids (especially daughters) being abused by their boyfriends, THEY'D STRAIGHT UP REPORT IT TO THE POLICE.

If this Sue's parents 'loves her so very much and would do ANYTHING for her', why didn't they even realize that their 'beloved' daughter is being abused?! Why didn't they report to the police about their daughter having bruises and knowing that she has a boyfriend and THAT BOYFRIEND COULD BE THE ONE CAUSING THOSE BRUISES AND BEATING HER?! Parents would be SUSPICIOUS and PARANOID of their only kids' safety, especially when they're studying at boarding schools or far away from them.

Extra: She gets teased for her golden eyes, and has her shark tooth necklace.

Nagisa has PINK EYES. The Matsuoka siblings have REDDISH EYES. And your Sue is the only kid that gets teased because she falls in the abnormal eye color like them?

Swimmingly Creating OCs - Other Swimming Strokes

You're probably all familiar with the four swimming styles used in competitions by now, aren't you? That's right, I'm talking about freestyle, breast stroke, back stroke and butterfly!

But there are more strokes beside those four, so if your OC isn't interested in competing in official races and just enjoys being in the water and you're looking for a unique character trait, you might want to consider giving him/her one of those lesser known swimming strokes:

Side Stroke

Doggy Paddle

Turtle Stroke

On the breast, extend right arm then pull, after pushing with the left leg (while opposite limbs are recovering), then opposite limbs repeat this process, i. e. left arm pulls after right leg pushes. Uses muscles of the waist. Head can easily be above or below water: this is a slow but very sustainable stroke, common in turtles and newts.

I am writing a story that is post apocalyptic, but everyone who lives has a mental illness. How can I write a histrionic and not make it seem like she is the disorder? I’ve done tons of research, but no matter how hard I try it just doesn’t work. - alexanderpette

  It’s really important to acknowledge that a person is more than whatever they might struggle with, so I commend you for having done that already. Now, below you’ll find some tips that I hope will help you with your issue.

1. Your character is a person. While this seem like a stupid thing to say, some writers tend to go in a direction where their characters are pawns for the success of their stories. First of all, keep in mind that your character is a person, and therefore they’ll have qualities, flaws, feelings, struggles, fears. They’ll have to deal with the things you, as a writer, will put them through. I suggest you have a small biography or a list of your character’s most prominent personality traits, fears and struggles always near you while you’re writing. Always write your character’s actions, thoughts and words according to their personality. Stay true to who they are. 

2. Don’t focus on the disorder. If you, as the writer, don’t focus too much on the disorder, chances are that the reader won’t either. People with mental illnesses rarely spend all their days thinking about them, and usually end up accepting their conditions. People with mental illnesses’ lives don’t revolve around their disorder, so you shouldn’t let your characters’ do. Don’t feel the need to introduce the disorder to your reader. You can make it clear that they have some kind of mental illness, but the name, symptoms, causes, etc, of it shouldn’t be presented to the reader in a too straight-forward way. Hint at their problems, show what happens when their disorder becomes completely obvious. Let the readers get to know the disorder as the story progresses, rather than presenting your character’s medical records word by word. 

3. Personality > Disorder. No disorder will affect everyone in the same way, so your character’s personality will influence the way they will react and express their disorder. Someone who is very shy is more likely to show less signs of the disorder in public and to have trouble talking about it. Also, personality should always matter more than disorder. This means that you should write your character’s actions according to their personality rather than to their disorder. Their disorder doesn’t define them, their personality does.

4. The Plot and the disorder. While your plot should never revolve only around your characters’ mental disorders, you need to keep in mind that a character that struggles with a certain disorder will struggle with it every minute of the day. There is no on and off switch for any mental disorder, and therefore you shouldn’t (and it’s not convenient!) use any disorder to get ahead in your plot. Whatever happens because of the disorder might trigger a sequence of events that will create your conflict, but it should always happen in relation to your character’s personality and/or external elements. The disorder by itself shouldn’t be a means to an end, as it might come out as offensive and also as an easy way out. 

5. Mental disorders aren’t only for villains. Having a mental disorder doesn’t turn anyone into a bad person by default. This means that, when writing someone with a mental disorder, it doesn’t mean that their disorder will make them do terrible things. There are genuinely good people who suffer from mental disorders and making mental disorders exclusive for villains is wrong and clichéd.

6. A mental illness doesn’t make your character “special”. A mental illness should be seen as a simple characteristic of your character, something that makes them more human, more believable. It shouldn’t be a reason why they’re seen as superior or superhero-ish. Treat your characters’ mental illness with the same simplicity you would treat your character having a permanent scar on their face. Don’t blow it out of proportion, and certainly don’t use it to differentiate your character from the reader or to make it look superior in any way.

7. Be specific with your research. Sometimes, writers research mental illnesses without going into detail about which disorder they’re dealing with.  Each mental disorder will have specific characteristics, symptoms, etc, and therefore you need a very in-depth research about your character’s illness rather than most illnesses in general. Give your reader enough information to try to figure out what is your characters’ disorder, but be subtle and don’t info dump.

8. Back story. Back story is important. How did your character learn about their disorder? Have they had it since they were born? Was it a traumatic event that made it “show up”? How does your character deal with it? Again, the answers to these questions are not universal and they will depend on your character’s personality, cultural influence and background.
