The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the Dakota Access Pipeline must be shut down by August 5 for a full environmental review. The controversial pipeline has been in operation for 3 years and carries oil from the North Dakota Bakken shale basin to Illinois. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe, along with activists, has long opposed the pipeline and its negative environmental impacts. The court ruled that the Army Corps of Engineers ‘failed to produce an Environmental Impact Statement despite conditions that triggered such a requirement.’ All use of the pipeline will stop until the environmental review is complete.

Hey! If anyone wants some good news today, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe just won a major legal victory against the Dakota Access Pipeline.
A federal judge ruled on 3/25/20 that the Trump administration violated the law by rushing through the pipeline’s approval process and ordered the Army Corps of Engineers to do a full environmental impact statement on the potential impact on the tribe in the event of a potential spill, a process that could take years.
From The Guardian:
In his ruling on Wednesday, the federal judge James Boasberg, an Obama appointee, said the environmental analysis by both the companies behind the pipeline and the corps was severely lacking.
The abysmal safety record of the pipeline parent company, Sunoco, “does not inspire confidence”, he added.
The court-mandated EIS will be more in depth than the assessment already completed by the corps – and could take years. The court will next decide if the pipeline should be shut down until the EIS is done.
From tribal chairman Mike Faith:
“After years of commitment to defending our water and earth, we welcome this news of a significant legal win. It’s humbling to see how actions we took four years ago to defend our ancestral homeland continue to inspire national conversations about how our choices ultimately affect this planet.”

Is the Miss Indian Nations Pageant simply a beauty contest for Native American young women? Though the title may sound that way, the pageant is not about bathing suits, body size, or achieving a “perfect smile”–not by all the miles around Turtle Island!
The United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, North Dakota has hosted the Miss Indian Nations Pageant for the past twenty-one years and is strongly linked to the United Tribes’ annual International Pow-Wow. Women contestants must be tribally enrolled and between the ages of 18 and 26. A presentation of their cultural practices is part of the competition.
