RetroPie Build - How To Install RetroPie step by step guide
How To Install RetroPie Step by Step Guide.
A couple of weeks ago I did a blog on why you should build a RetroPie gaming machine instead of buying a Nintendo Classic. Â I basically talked about all the advantages of building your own retro gaming console instead of buying some the NES or SNES classic that is coming out this summer. Well this past week I had a hankering to play some Mario Kart and didnât want to wait so here is my step by step guide on building RetroPie gaming machine and instructions on how to install RetroPie.
Step #1 Build your Raspberry Pi 3
For this build I recommend the Raspberry Pi 3, especially if you want to play Nintendo 64 games. It also has bluetooth built-in so you donât need an adapter for your controllers, you can just sync it. Â Iâm using my PS4 controllers and itâs been working awesome.
You are going to need the following items.
Raspberry Pi 3
Case
MicroSD card reader
HDMI Cable
USB Keyboard
MicroSD card (at least 32GB)
Power supply 2A

So once you get all your components together you are ready for the build. Â Putting the Rasp pi together is very easy. Open the package and place the Rasp Pi 3 in the provided case. It literally clicks into place and than just close it up. Now were ready to move on to installing RetroPie on your Raspberry Pi.
Step #2Â How To Install RetroPie
The next step is to install the RetroPie operating system on to the micro disk. Because the Raspberry Pi doesnât have an internal hard drive, everything including the OS is installed on the micro SD card.
So the first thing you should do is download the RetroPie image to you computer. You can find the software here at https://retropie.org.uk/download/. If you are using a Raspberry Pi 3 use the download Raspberry Pi 2/3 which is the second option. Once you download the .gz file make sure to extract it, it will extract a .img file which is what we will use.
Now weâre ready to Install RetroPie So pop in the micro SD into the SD adapter and plug it into your computer. Iâm using a mac so I used a program to Apple Pi  Baker. If you are using Windows itâs recommended to use Win32DiskImager.
Using Apple Pi Baker is really easy, just make sure you have your SD card selected under the Pi-Crust. Â Under the window Pi-Ingredients select the RetroPie image we downloaded and then click the Prep For Noobs. It will partition your micro SD to FAT32 and install the image. Once itâs finished you can pop the micro SD card into your Rasp Pi 3, hook up the Pi to your TV and start it up.
 Step #3 Configuring Your RetroPie
Now that we know how to install RetroPie lets talk about configuring your gaming machine and set up some games. I recommend at first plugging in a usb keyboard to make it easy to set up your wi-fi and bluetooth connections.
Once your Pi boots up for the first time you are going to come to a game pad configuration window. If you have a wired USB controller, plug it in and map out your buttons. If you need a reference you can check out this page HERE!!!

Iâm using my PS4 controllers so I mapped out the buttons accordingly and continued on. Â The next window is your main window for RetroPie. You will notice the only window at this time is the RetroPie configuration window and nothing else. Thatâs fine, just press A and head to your WiFi setup option. Enter your Wifi intro so your Pi will now be connected to your network.
The next thing is lets activate Bluetooth if you have a bluetooth controller. My PS4 controller is so Iâll use this as an example.
To Connect Playstation 4 Wireless Controller to RetroPi
Put it in Pairing mode ( Hold PS button and share for 3 seconds). The light will start to flash when in pairing mode.
Under RetroPie Bluetooth option in configuration select Register and Connect Bluetooth device with the keyboard. It will search for your controller. Â You may have to repeat this step a few times, once it sees it, you will see wireless controller in the list. Select it and your are all set.
Now that you have your Raspberry Pi connected via wifi and your controller is set up you can unplug your keyboard and you are ready to download some roms.
You can install ROMs a couple of ways. One way is over your wifi network or you can use a USB connection. To do this partition and format your USB stick to FAT32 and make a folder called retro pie on it. Then plug it into your rasp pi and reset it. Â RetroPie will configure it at start-up and create new folders under the Retropie directory you made, then plug-in your usb back to your computer and you will notice a few new folders including ROMS. Put your ROMS in their system folders then plug it back into your pi and reset EmulationStation. Retropie will automatically install your noms from the Flashdrive and create new categories in your main window.
