Following the success of the Bandcamp release of 'Drums Of Joy Volume 1' at the end of 2021, this killer selection of original drum breaks from Dr Rubberfunk is now available as a sample pack on Mixxed.
At #25 in Craig’s Funky Forty album countdown, it’s Bobby Womack with Fly Me To The Moon.
Following a conversation with Craig just after the release of the first in the ‘My Life At 45’ 7” series, we hit upon the idea of a 45 year mixtape as a special mix for the weekly ‘Trunk of Funk’ slot on his BBC 6 Music show.
Starting with 1972, I came up with an initial list of well over 250 songs from the next 45 years, before settling on the 80 or so songs and snippets of tracks that appear in the final two part mix. Part One was broadcast on Saturday 23rd May and can be heard via the above link.
Part Two goes out on Saturday 30th May and can be heard on DAB in the UK, or via BBC Sounds.
All the songs I’ve included have many, many attached memories for me; from the 70s tunes I discovered (and re-discovered) when first starting out DJing in the early 90s, thru the ‘School Disco’ era of early 80s hip hop, the ‘cut and paste’ styles of the late 80s and the acid jazz of the 90s that both inspired my first musical productions with a sampler, to the 2000s and beyond when I started releasing my own music - it’s very much an autobiographical mix, but I hope the chosen songs will resonate with others for similar memory-soaked reasons!

Featuring the one and only John Turrell, ‘Boom!’ comes with a bluesy soul swagger, whilst on the flip side, ‘Steppin’ In’ is a low-slung jazz funk instrumental thick with synths, hammond and piano. Both tracks picking up extensive support from DJs and radio shows worldwide - grab the vinyl while you still can!

All my Ginger Baker albums live on a ‘Drums Of Joy’ shelf next to Louie Bellson, which prompted me to pick a track from the break-fest that is ‘Louie in London’, which in turn reminded me about the London Big Sound library LP that I found in a charity shop last summer for 30p. Don’t @ me about my record filing system… More heavy drum action from MRR-ADM - taken from a 10” EP from 2008 featuring Malcolm Catto - another drumming legend. Had to work some Gang Starr in, a big influence when I first started DJing and again when I started producing - having a new album from Guru and Premier in 2019 was a wonderful surprise.

Here’s another track from the forthcoming Izo FitzRoy album ‘Skyline’, her debut for Jalapeno Records, arriving on February 24th 2017. 'Say Something’ was the first track Izo and I worked on together; great times were had in the studio and we decided to see if we could record a full album together. Took a while, but it’s exciting to be able to share the fruits of our labours with you all soon!
