@furyroadpothole-blog
I'm still here...kinda
I'm not so sure that I'll continue role playing on here, I just don't have the time. Ill certainly be lurking from time to time and reblogging some stuff.
Kill switches. I set the sequence myself.
Because Furiosa is BOSS!!
Thea - Sri Lanka Cat Snake - Boiga ceylonensis
Wide awake shoelace
“Mediocre, Morsov!”
I know it’s actually a grimace of pain, but it looks like she’s grinning triumphantly down at Joe’s face as it splatters to the ground in the 3rd gif.
That is the most expressive and gelatinous cat I have ever seen.
look at this absurd screaming loofah
“We were shooting in the canyons, it was really hot and everybody was sort of having a long day. And I wrapped and I was sort of, like, walking around and it’s like dead silent, we’re in the middle of the desert and really hot. And then, all of the sudden, we start, like, in the distance hearing Bob Marley? And we’re all just like, ‘What the fuck?’ and we’re looking around and, all of a sudden, it gets louder and louder and louder. And it’s like this guy come up on a bicycle, like pedaling through the canyon with Bob Marley, like boom box on his bike, and everyone starts pissing themselves, and Tom had gotten an ice cream man to come for us in the middle of the desert.” - Riley Keough
Mad Max: Fury Road concept art by Brendan McCarthy
Ohhh there’s some things I hadn’t seen yet!
I want one of those scenes in a dude bro film where “tomboy” chick has to wear a dress to go undercover or whatever, but instead of the guys drooling as she walks down the stairs, they’re like “k. U need to stop. Go put the cargo pants back on. You look super uncomfortable and awkward in that. Brutus, you go be the fake prostitute.”
I’m just imagining this super ripped guy called Brutus being like ‘YESSS!!! I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE THE FAKE PROSTITUTE!! Now is my time to shine!!’
so I got inspired… and had to make a comic….
*wipes away a single tear* Yes.
I remember something like that.
Seeing all these close ups of Joe’s face makes me desperately want to give him a facial and fix those damn eyebrows.
As long you don’t touch his hair I think he’d like it.
I want to give him dwarf braids in the WORST WAY.
@poisonous-angel don’t you dare touch those eyebrows they’re beautiful black caterpillars and they must STAY. If I can’t have beardy Joe, I want as much face hair as I can get.
*headcanon about Joe beauty care*
I’ll be a little bit invasive here, sorry Joe, but he totally shaves his armpits, and for the little we can see he shaves his face too, although for aesthetics purposes he don’t need it, I think is acceptable he shaves down there too, imagine the lice that lives among the wretched and probably in the citadel if not for everybody shaving. He probably take care of his hair like a crazy, within the limits of a wasteland of course
I’d totally go for a beardy Joe.
That’s interesting. I have thoughts on this.
If you look at his hair, it’s not particularly well-kept at all. It’s stained by the desert (I don’t know how much of that is avoidable in a post-shampoo world), and it looks brittle and frayed. Again, I know they don’t have shampoos and deep conditioners, etc. anymore, but I can’t imagine Joe wouldn’t use something to clean his hair with. Urine is a decent bleach, so if he really wanted to keep his hair white, he could use that. I agree with you that he does have some sort of care regimen for it, else it’d look greasy and stringy. But I don’t think he spends as much time on it as you do. He can’t. He’s got an empire to run.
He clearly shaves. I looked back through the movie, and by god he shaves his pits too. That could imply that he at least trims his pubes, which kind of shatters my headcanon about him letting all of his hair except his face grow naturally. But it may be less about masculinity at this point and more about practicality; I can see how pit hair snagged in his armor might annoy him. But it could also be vanity: gods don’t have pit hair or pubes. There must be a reason he risks running a very sharp blade over his cracked and pustuled skin. What it is can be a number of things I’m too sickheaded to list right now.
Similar reasons apply to the beard. There are only two people I’m aware of in the Citadel with beards: Organic and Corpus. I could draw several conclusions from this, but now isn’t the time. I think Joe shaves because he can, one; two, it keeps the seal around his mask airtight.
I’ve seen in my line of work many men who are weird about body hair. The hair on their heads can be as long as Joe’s, but when it comes to body hair they need all of it off. We have a client that comes in and needs all the body hair off because he just doesn’t like it. It’s very expensive for him and very exhausting for us (extremely!) but hey, the client gets what the client wants, and the sacrifice of pay and pain is worth it for him. Joe reminds me of this client. Other than his head, there’s no other hair on him.
The War Boys are modeled after Joe. Other than the hair, which shows that he’s in charge, they look just like him. The powdered skin, the black eyes, the various ornaments. They have no hair either. I feel like whatever feelings Joe has about body hair transfers onto them. Corpus is an exception because he’s his son and the Organic is his doctor, someone even more important.
It’s also harder to clean and tend to the pustules and whatever else pains him with body hair getting in the way. I can imagine it feels terrible along with the armor.
“The War Boys are modeled after Joe. Other than the hair, which shows that he’s in charge, they look just like him.” Literally a lion (maned) and his “cubs” (too immature for manes).
Also, the warboys shave because they’re in a death cult, so they want to make themselves look as skeletal as they can.
You raise very good points. I agree with you on Corpus and Organic being exceptions to Joe’s cultism, but not entirely. I have approximately 1746389256 headcanons about Corpus (he’s lowkey my favorite but nobody ever talks about him which makes me sad), and one such is his beard. Rictus is bald and beardless, primarily, I assume, because he wears that webbed rubber mask, and is very much involved in his father’s world. Corpus is bald with a beard, which could mean one of two things: either he chooses to shave his head but not his face, or his father requires that he shave his head. I don’t think it’s the latter, so if we’re going with the former, and if we’re also using hair as a status symbol, it means that Corpus acknowledges his father’s position as leader of the “pride”, and so in that way pays at least lip service to his father’s cult. But that he has a beard is a subtle act of rebellion to me. “Nobody else in the Citadel has this,” it says, “except for the one person you involve in your very personal and intimate business.” It also says to me “Look, I can grow a beard because I don’t wear a mask like you. I still have breathing problems, but I choose not to copy you like Rictus does. I choose to go my own way.” There aren’t many more physical markers of virility and masculinity than beards (besides muscles and testicles, which Joe flaunts symbolically [emphasis on symbolically] all the time), and the fact that Corpus has one and Joe either does not or cannot is very meaningful. Corpus has his own physical failings, but he presents a foil to both his father and brother: he doesn’t have muscles or perhaps even working testicles, but he does have another very clear marker of masculinity, and something else that goes beyond gender/sex altogether: a mind sharp and clear enough to be the ruin of both of them, if Corpus only had the ability and influence to use it. Whether he cannot or chooses not to is a whole nother discussion I don’t want to have right now, but happily will if someone wants to talk about it.
Don’t ask me for my headcanon about why Organic has a beard; I’m going to tell you he’s lazy. He has access to all kinds of blades so he could shave if he wanted to, but judging by his hair and general appearance, I don’t think a personal beauty regimen is as high on his priority list as it is on Joe’s.
Don’t even get me started on Organic and personal grooming….
Why Fury Road’s Heroes Are Better Than Ur Fav
The thing about Fury Road is there are a lot of movies okay, a lot of movies where the main villain is some preposterously evil psychopath rapist zealot.
And in most of these movies, the main (male) hero is a toolbag. Just an utter toolbag. But we’re supposed to think he’s a stand-up guy because he’s not actively exploiting women 24/7 like that preposterously evil psychopath rapist zealot over on the other side of the film’s incredibly dubious moral line.
Firefly comes to mind, and its hero: Malcolm “It’s okay for me to call you a whore over and over because I haven’t actually physically punched, slapped or raped you” Reynolds
Guardians of the Galaxy comes to mind, and its hero: Peter “I can’t even remember the name of the woman I slept with last night and I forgot to get her home before leaving the planet in my space ship and stranding her but it’s okay because I’m not actively trying to destroy the universe” Quill
James Bond comes to mind.
Indiana Jones comes to mind.
Toolbags.
All of them.
Fury Road is so refreshing because it doesn’t use Immortan Joe’s villainy as an excuse to brush off the milder sexism of the film’s male heroes.
Max Rockatansky is ZERO PERCENT sexist toolbag. He doesn’t leer at the half naked bathing wives when he first encounters them, not even for a millisecond, and not an any point later in the movie either. He never dismisses them as lesser. He never talks over them. He never presumes that he knows better.
Nux has one single line in which he refers to the wives as “shiny” to Max back at the start of the film, when he still views them, and himself, as offerings that exist only to please Immortan Joe. But the moment he comes into actual direct communication with them he does a complete 180 and proceeds to behave in a completely respectful manner towards them. He is wholly respectful in how he looks at them, talks to them, and has physical contact with them.
I’ve already written posts about how Furiosa’s characterization avoids the more common (and sexist) female action hero tropes [X, X]. Plenty of blog posts and pro articles have explained at length the awesomeness of the various other female heroes in the film, so I won’t go into that here.
Point being:
In another film, Immortan Joe would have been presented as a freakish outlier, who mainly exists to make a male hero’s toolbaggery seem acceptable in comparison. After all – who’s going to notice a few sexist smudges on the hero’s shirt or the thin crust of misogyny caked to his shoes when he’s standing next to 80 metric tons of anthropomorphized rape sewage?
In Fury Road, Immortan Joe is presented as patient 0 of a toxic masculinity epidemic. He’s infected an entire culture with his misogynist, dehumanizing spores. The male heroes are either immune to his influence, or (in Nux’s case) are cured of it through the aid of strong feminist medicine. Either way, by the time we get 1/3 of the way through the film there’s not a single trace of his sexism in either of their systems.
They’re clean.
Reblogging for this excellent meta and for the screamingly hilarious descriptions of Joe, namely 80 metric tons of anthropomorphized rape sewage and patient zero of a toxic masculinity epidemic.
