Goodbye London, Hello Rio.
Breaking_in
This nerdy action-packed comedy has so much potential with a great cast that's on-screen chemistry is hard to match for american television comedy based series. This nerdy comedy tilts its hat to the nerdier viewers without making them a joke or a walking clique, the light hearted subtle popular nerd culture references has even the casual viewer laughing along. Maybe Bret Harrison has a type cast problem but I still love every character he has ever played in recent history(Sam Tyler In reaper, In the Loop)
It's short format allows it to be fruity and fresh in small doses. It reminds me more of web-series than a short serialised television drama. The fast paced 3 act format allows for dynamic stories and with the premise of the show being so unique it allows for some pretty cool bubble episodes, it's not focused on mythology. I couldn't imagine watching it with 3 5 minute advert breaks in it though, it'd bore me. Maybe thats where Fox is going wrong. The blank nerd and his realism makes my heart glow and gives me hope for the nerds portrayal in television land - Don't get me wrong, I love Big Bang Theory (and I do have real friends resembling the characters) but the blatant mocking of the characters makes me sometimes so angry and frustrated.
All in all this fresh, awesome comedy shouldn't of been cancelled by FOX, ignore the ratings and you'd have a perfect cable television show. You have the viewers, you have the low budget shooting and short format. I'll tell you what Fox, give one of the new media legends a chance with the show and watch them grow you a cult following for an new online show.
In my post last week about why we aren’t on television, I mentioned that Thoughts from Places videos are our least-viewed, even though many nerdfighters like them the most of any of the videos we make.
Many of you just openly disagreed with me, saying that there was no way that TFP videos get fewer views, because they are our best videos and “everyone knows it.” In fact, I had more than 100 messages in my tumblr ask box from people saying this.
But the video above, despite featuring Chris Colfer in both the title and the thumbnail, has 175,000 views—more than 75,000 fewer than our average video from the last six months.
This doesn’t bother me at all—nerdfighters watched and liked the video and we’ll keep making them—but for some reason they just aren’t as viral as, like, Question Tuesday videos or Hank discussing the idea of the Friendzone.
But this is just another example of why the corporate patronage model for funding online video (and other media) is screwed up: The corporate patronage model (which pays you based on the number of views) incentivizes people to make stuff that will appeal to the broadest possible audience, not stuff that will mean something to a smaller audience. Advertisers can’t distinguish between stuff we watch and stuff we love. It doesn’t understand that while lots of people WATCH 2 and a Half Men, more people LOVECommunity. I don’t have a solution to that problem, but we need to figure it out—both in nerdfighteria and in the broader world.
I realize this is not super-important to most/any of you, but I’m trying to figure it out, and in doing so to figure out how best to care for and nurture this awesome community.
John makes a great point. Personally, I love Thoughts from places videos but we saw the same issues arise around Chuck. It's a show that is loved by a small but strong audience luckily the fans found a way to show their love and support through #NOTANEILSENFAMILY and the Subway campaigns. Social media is really breaking ground with traditional advertisers and rating systems, we just need to make sure the new media landscape isn't left behind with it's independent producers.
Side note: Please excuse the bad spelling and grammar, I'm running on 48 hours with little to no sleep. Damn College studies an all.
