Chelsea 1x3 Atletico Madrid Apr14 âPark the Bus 2nd leg (NFL special)â
1/ ATL score 2 goals from open play through a âNFL likeâ set play, starting with triangle combination play between LB-LM-ST on the wings, before finding a deeper Tiago for diagonal switch to Juanfran(RB), catching Hazard(LW) by surprise and assisting from the byline area. Importantly, Ashley Cole(LB) and David Luiz(DM) are dragged out of this diagonal passing lane due to the midfield playing narrow and joining the wing play.
2/ CHE relying on a âNFL Hail Mary playâ with David Luiz playing a Quarter Back role in direct passes for Torres to control and make magic along with Hazard. P.S. What a player Torres was taking on 3 ATL defenders at a time over both legs and often finding success in winning a corner or throw in.
Atletico Madrid 0x0 Chelsea Apr14Â âPark the Bus 1st legâ
1/ ATL with lack of effort to get to byline for cutbacks or crosses..due to the wide men of Koke and Diego in 442, coming inside and playing narrow in halfspaces...and also due to CHE strength aerially when facing sideways or up the pitch. As a result, key focus on backpost crosses from the traditional FB area with Raul Garcia or Diego Costa attacking the ball between FBs & CBs and also with the backline facing towards their own goal, making it harder to defend.
2/ CHE defend this vulnerability through âparking the busâ and being deep enough so they are not challenged aerially while running back towards their own goal. ATL counter this from FKs and CKs through always playing short as an attempt to draw more defenders out of the block and increase chances of winning aerial battles.
Chile 1x0(2xredcard) Uruguay CopaAmericaQF15
1/ CHI score through 3/4 bodies from edge of the area after a corner..URU could have utilised Dycheâs Burnley tactics in funnelling shots towards the goalkeeper in the centre of the goal through only blocking the corners so as to allow Muslera full view of the effort
2/ URU aka Atletico Madrid, utilise a mid-to-low block with the back4 constantly organising against rotations and overloads from 2 of CHIâs mid3 joining the front3..URUâs mid4 fantastic in using thier cover shadows to block line breaking passes and make the defendersâ jobs possible...with expansive running from the wide men and front2 being relentless and an almost unbelievable task
..or take 2 touches & play around the corner like Hoddle (click here)
Last goal would be so frustrating for those attackers breaking a neck to get in the box, so make sure there is an END PRODUCT
Santos 2x0(red card) Palmeiras Oct19
1/ SAN mirror Sampaoli touchline behaviour in aggressively getting the ball back early on into the match, resulting in early goals. Ex Brazil manager Menezes seems a mirror of PAL lacklustre and lost approach
2/ Brasileirao matches seem to accept 20 min stoppages throughout..GK had cramp (?!)
Flamengo 1x0 Santos Sep19
1/ FLA long goal kicks onto opposing FBs aiming to win throw-ins..which then are put down the line for possession or to win the 2nd ball...and then find the opposite CM/10 for 1.switch play  2.through ball to LW/RW/9  3. shoot âchuta!â
2/ FLA 2 DMs (Arao&Gerson) would be targets of Bournemouthâs Eddie Howe who loves 2 beasts (Billing&Lerma) patrolling the centre of the park..very physical...10 fouls in 1st 25mins from both teams
Liverpool 1x0 Flamengo Dec19
1/ Underrated advantage of the False 9 dropping into space...once direct approach is taken from CB/FB towards RW/LW, 9 and CM are situated to control the 2nd ball ANDÂ with space for a progressive touch due to the back line having had to have dropped.
2/ Adam Lallana clear use of Basketball âPick and Rollâ runs where he will 1 touch set and make a blocking run to allow for ball carrier to drive into space - directing play from a selfless player perspective.
