I'M BACK IN CANADA
My internal clock is telling me it's 4am though, so that's not fun.
Waiting in the Narita airport to check in for my flight (still got like 2 hours, and it leaves in 5). See you all super soon!
So I cried on the train yesterday. Twice. I cried on both of them.
It wasn't completely sad crying though. There was some crying on the walk to the train station too. Half of it was definitely "I'm gonna miss everyone," but the other part was just being really happy about how all the goodbyes went I think. It was a good day.
I got to say goodbye again to everybody during homeroom, and my teacher gave me some postcards and then everyone clapped for me. (And then one my classmates gave me a cool present but I didn't open that til I got home.) Two of my classmates gave me a half letter half water colour collage of things we did together, which was super sweet, and one of my best friends here wrote me a letter that she made me promise not to read til I got home. I read it on the 2nd train home though, because her reasoning was that she wanted to talk to me one last time and it would take me forever to read the kanji. It made me cry a bit. I also had to say goodbye to her at lunch because she's the only one of my classmates that doesn't have drama in 3rd on Thursdays.
They did a run through in drama so I sat and watched and talk to one of the girls in my class(and traded favourite bands with her) and then another girl who gave me the sweetest goodbye present a few days ago and I wanted to say goodbye to properly when neither of us had to get off a train in 30 seconds. After the class I took a couple pictures with people and another classmate gave me her contact information and said that when I become a movie director and she's a graphic designer we should make something together. Once I got to the classroom I said bye to more people and even some of the guys wished me well and whatnot.
As I was leaving the school I had a weirdly movie montage-y moment because the song that started playing on my iPod(which I have no control over because I can't turn the screen on anymore after it turns off) was all instrumental and bittersweet and then I took some pictures of the school cos I hadn't yet and as I was leaving someone yelled my name and when I turned around there were a bunch of classmates waving at me through one of the windows of a walkway between buildings. The song changed pretty much exactly when I left school property too which was extra weird.
Okay, that's what happened on my last day of school, now I'm leaving the house with my host parents (sister has school) to go to Tokyo station, leave them and go with exchange people, make a speech, get a certificate, sleep, and then get on a plane. See you guys soon!
epsilonshock replied to your post “Okay, seriously. Who’s going with me to Desolation of Smaug next week?...”
I will watch it! I have already seen it but it is a chance for us to hang out!
Of course you have! And yeah, some hang out time would be cool.
I did that thing where I get really distracted by a bunch of stuff and stop going to something regularly, in this case it was karate for the last few weeks and I feel kinda bad about it?? At the same time it was one too many sources of anxiety and stopping going was probably good for me. I mostly just feel bad about making them worry.
mcnuggin replied to your post “I just spend an hour or two packing up most of my stuff with my host...”
im sorry youve gotta leave your japanese family, maybe in the future japan will magically move to become part of north america and sit right next to vancouver island. that would be cool.
Ahh, thank you! That'd be cool, but also maybe not because of the catastrophe that would ensue if it happened in our lifetimes. My host dad plans on going to Canada in 8 years though, apparently. So it's not the last time I'll see my host family.
Okay, seriously. Who's going with me to Desolation of Smaug next week? It doesn't come out in Japan til February 28th so I can't watch it til I get home and it's been hurting me.
I just spend an hour or two packing up most of my stuff with my host mom. By Wednesday most of it'll be packed/mailed except for the things I need for school and stuff going in my carry-on. This is a really weird feeling.
I also bought $16.75 worth of sweets today. Seriously, almost everything in that store only costs like a dollar. I hadn't bough anything for clubs I run(/am sometimes in charge of) and candy's the easiest to get really, so most of this isn't for me.
Some things I found in a store near my house (but didn't buy).
Happy New Years! (It's technically 2am but I was playing Mahjong)
A REALLY LONG catch-up post I'm sorry
So a week ago I went to Tokyo DisneySea with my host mom, host sister, and one of her friends, which was super fun. I bought a BUNCH of souvenirs for people and went on some really cool rides. Also the food was really good. My favourite place to look at was Port Discovery but I did get some really great pictures of the Aladdin stuff at night and my favourite rides were Journey to the Center of the Earth and Tower of Terror. I learned in the Little Mermaid areas that I legitimately glow under black light, too. We had soft tacos for lunch and curry for supper and a bunch of treats in between and it was all in all really fun, but also definitely the most tiring day I've had since I got here. I got up at 6 and was up for the next 15 hours either in a car or at DisneySea.
Last Sunday there was an exchange student(past, present, and future) Christmas party in Tokyo, which was really fun. I got to see some people that I haven't since orientation and some that I only met at the last gathering. They hadn't finished decorating when we got there so we all helped which was fun. And then we made and decorated Christmas trees in groups and made candles that we gave titles and stuff. It was super fun! Afterwards, I went to find a Lawson(convenience store but they're the only ones with machines where you can buy tickets to things) with 3 other exchange students(2 Australians, 1 New Zealander) and when we could find one right away me and one of the others went to Shibuya to find one because it was only 2 stations away and would definitely have one. It was super fun, and we talked for hours and made plans to wander Shibuya some time when we actually have time(Boxing Day).
On Monday a bunch of Australian students came for their week long home stay so I spent a lot of the week being dragged into conversations to translate. At one point some classmates asked me to come along to a ramen shop with them and the exchange student one of them was harbouring. I was okay with going because I like my classmates but HOLY CRAP THAT EXCHANGE STUDENT WAS SUPER ANNOYING. Anyway, we hung around Machida and talked a bunch which was fun.
Then on that Saturday an Australian friend from my exchange program texted me 'cause she was bored so we hung out in Tokyo that afternoon. We went to Aoyama cos her host mom said she should go at some point, and it turns out it's the part of Tokyo with all the embassies so we took pictures in front of Canada and Australia. We also went up Tokyo Tower and then to Daimon for supper before parting ways until Monday when I got an impromptu invite to a Christmas party at her house because a bunch of people couldn't come so I went to Chiba to visit her. We played a lot of bingo, and I won a signed picture of her host brother :P
On Tuesday(Christmas Eve) I made a goodbye speech in front of the whole school cos it was my third last day and Elias' last day. And then our classmates threw a mini goodbye thing for us and took a million pictures. My teacher have me a really nice pen set and my classmates wrote me a letter and got me a little present.
On Christmas I hung out with friends in Asakusa and we went to the temple around there are then to a Kabuki theatre(just to look though) in Ginza that had a bunch of traditional Japanese stuff in the station underneath it and my friend bought me a cellphone charm there. We also wandered around the largest fish market because she needed something for her grandparents who were coming over for the holidays.
On Boxing Day I hung out with the Australian student again in Shibuya where we did some minimal clothes shopping and wandered around and managed to walk all the way to Harajuku. Which isn't that far, but still impressive. We went to a coffee shop that had maple lattes made with Canadian maple syrup so I got one that we both tried because apparently the only maple syrup in Australia is %100 Canadian as well.
On the 28th we went to a concert that her friends (band name: Orange Bank Lead, Ore Bari for short) were the opening act for, and we saw Gold Rush, who are the happiest group EVER, Brand New Vibe, who were super great and I bought their CD which they then signed while being super excited about having foreign fans, and Funkist, which is a Japanese Gypsy rock group which was weird, but they were all really good. Live houses are maybe my new favourite thing and I'm upset that I didn't find out about them sooner. But it was a super fun show and yay cool memories.
Now it's New Years Eve and if excitement happens I'll make a post about it tomorrow. Sorry I haven't posted about anything in a while but I was busy doing all this stuff. Anyway, that's all, goodbye.
I've been awake for 15 hours. 12 of those hours were spent at DisneySea. I actually tool pictures and stuff but I'm dead tired so I'll upload pictures and post stories tomorrow. Goodnight
It was test week this week. I had 4 finals, one of which was just making to tissue cases, but they were all fairly easy. I definitely bombed the chem final but that was more because I got caught up in the math, I still understood everything and it was an easy-ish final. As long as I know I could have finished it in English, I'm happy.
On Tuesday after our English finals I went to Lalaport (a mall) with Elias(the Austrian exchange student who insists that I refer to him by name on my blog now) and our twin classmates. We took pictures in a photo booth(because that's what people do whenever they go places together apparently) and had lunch together. Then we had to part ways though because the twins' test marks actually matter.
Also, yesterday my host mom asked me if I'd rather go to Shibuya or Disneyland with her and my host sister tomorrow because we all have the day off, and I said Disneyland because it's kind of expensive so it's harder to go with friends. So now, my Christmas present from my host family is going to Disneyland(the amusement park part) for all of tomorrow with my host mom and host sister and her friend. I'm super excited!
I went and did stuff with my host mom all day today (see facebook for photo evidence and such), and before we went to visit her dad we went to the post office to mail things. Fun fact, CANADA IS SUPER STRICT ABOUT MAILING THINGS INTO IT
I had to fill out specifically what each item I sent was (skirt - 1, t-shirts - 5, jacket - 1, etc.) and how much each thing weighed, as well as it's monetary value in yen. It was INSANE. Also, it cost $40 and I sent that one by surface mail.
Anyway, I'm REALLY not looking forward to the next time I send a package. That was not a pleasant experience. But I've still got a bunch of gifts to send and buy.
I realized how soon it is til I leave all my friends here today and NOW I'M REALLY SAD
I made plans to hang out with friends next week! That's a first. Usually it's all impromptu and stuff
