Frank Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz | UFC 22

Another throwback fight. We go back to 1999 and UFC 22: Only One Can be Champion. Frank Shamrock is the inaugural and defending UFC Light Heavyweight champion (then called the middleweight championship). He enters this fight with Tito Ortiz having defended the title 3x in '98. After years of trading wins and losses in Pancrase, a brutal rivalry with Bas Rutten, and being unable to get that King of Pancrase title, Frank is finally champion. And he's one of the best in the sport.

Ortiz is a newcomer, a former All-American fighter who made his name for poking the bear. His trash talk and antics got him a ton of attention, especially as he was trash talking Lion's Den - Ken Shamrock's gym and home of several fighter he beat in his early days. Only 5 fights into his career, he drew Frank Shamrock in a title fight.

It would be TIto's rivalry with Ken Sharmock would be one of the things to really push the early ZUFFA UFC forward, but this fight with Frank is definitely worth a watch for a few reasons. While he would eventually return to fight, this was basically where Frank Shamrock's time as a top-end fighter ended as he retired immediately after only to come back sparingly for the next decade. Another, you get to see a baby Tito Ortiz as he fights for UFC gold for the first time ever. It also serves as a good benchmark for MMA as this fight was held up as one of the top technical bouts in MMA for 1999.

Instead (or in preparation) of watching Dwayne Johnson’s version of “The Smashing Machine”, I suggest everyone go watch the original HBO documentary on Mark Kerr’s life.

It’s as good as a documentary in this sport can be, warts and all. It’s personal, visceral, and all the things you want (and don’t want) to see about this big dumb sport we love and the people who partake in it.

Fedor Emelianenko vs Mirko Cro Cop | August 28, 2005

When we talk about the degradation of the heavyweight division in MMA, all you really need to do is go back and watch some of those old fights to see what we're talking about. Look at the technical and athletic ability on display here and tell me with a straight face that the modern heavyweight division could replicate this.

It's impossible to really understand how hot both these guys are when the fight came together. Cro Cop, a K-1 star and one of the best kickboxers on the planet, entered this one immediately established he was the goods. From his debut in 2001, up to this fight, he would go 16-2-2 while taking out some of the biggest names in the sport - Josh Barnett, Igor Vovchanchyn, Sakuraba, etc. He was on a 7 fight win streak with his previous six wins coming by stoppage. And that was over a span of like one and a half years. It is funny to note this fight was 'supposed' to happen in 2004, but politicking team and a surprise loss to Kevin Randleman in the '04 Grand Prix killed it.

In August 2005, Fedor was the best fighter in the sport. His run through PRIDE had been so thoroughly dominant, the only moment of real duress had been him getting suplexed on to his head by Kevin Randleman only for Fedor to sub him 30 seconds later. He had thoroughly defeated Big Nog to win the heavyweight title and the 2004 Grand Prix.

The most interesting thing about this fight is how prepared Fedor is to hang with Cro Cop on the feet. He spent his camp working with Ernesto Hoost and his team in Holland. And you can see it in the fight. The counter leg kicks. The development of his active guard and checks to deal with the kicks of Cro Cop. Just next level stuff. Things we don't see in MMA today despite the fact we know it works!

One of my favorite sequences from the Christian Rodriguez-Austin Bashi fight yesterday.

Really just love how crafty CeeRod is. Using Bashi’s aggression and waist lock to gramby roll with his leg hooked and end up on top. The nice little uchimata to create space along the fence at the end there and then threaten with the choke as Bashi tries to regain control.

Oleksandr Usyk vs Tyson Fury 2 | December 21, 2024

While Fury seems to think he's getting a 3rd Usyk fight, I'm quite happy with the two fights we got. Technical brilliance on display from the undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs). Truly one of the greatest.

Usyk has another fight lined up, this time set to rematch a different British man - Daniel Dubois (22-2) after their controversial first fight. Usyk and Dubois will meet at Wembley this Saturday (July 19).
