nothing funnier to me than when AI does math wrong. like I get why it happens, it's a language model that's treating the numbers you feed it as words rather than integers and then giving you an answer based on how those words typically appear in a block of text instead of actually performing a calculation. but the one thing computers are genuinely incredible at. you fucked up a perfectly good calculator is what you did, look at it it's got hallucinations
Me: I don't get it. I thought I was doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I'm like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be. How does everything feel terrible now?
The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it's the fascism. You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.
Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.
Tiny OSHA Me: BOSS, THE FASCISM.

i love that lestat has been catholic, atheist, heretic, and god, and yet never once boring
The Traitor Baru Cormorant, you say? That's a new name to me. So it's worth a look?
YES
(with the caveat that there are some pretty heavy themes and plenty of potentially triggering content, especially related to colonial exploitation, eugenics, various types of institutional bigotry, and (more in the second and third installments) traumatic injuries including non-consensual medical procedures and torture. also, body horror.)
the books (three out now, final fourth installment in the works) are usually classified as fantasy, though that's debatable imo, as their supernatural elements are rare, ambiguous, and all are real-world concepts exaggerated to their extremes. i'd call the genre speculative colonial age/pre-industrial fiction set in an imaginary world instead of our own.
the driving force is the protagonist's desire to understand the world and use her knowledge to reverse the colonization of her home island that starts when she's a small child. she believes her best chance of achieving this is to work within the empire's system, to gain both skills and power to execute her goals. she experiences a lot of opposition, both because of the prejudice of her colleagues and the natural hostility against the system she's serving.
but the main conflict is internal, an ever-present fear that she will lose herself and the ties to her home, that she will cross a moral point of no return by continuing to work for the imperial power, that she will ultimately fail - or take too long - and make both her sacrifices and the suffering she has inflicted on others pointless.
Baru is also a lesbian, adding to her character's conflict and the stakes of her story, because the system she is part of is extremely homophobic at its core. the series shows many different attitudes to gender and sexuality, between individual characters and between cultures - including settings where queer identities are normalized, or considered utterly unacceptable, or those with roles unlike the western world but restrictive and discriminatory in their own way.
i love the novels' imaginative and thorough world-building, whether it comes to cultural norms, history, myth, economics, linguistics, demographics, or geography. the author thinks deeply about various social topics and presents them in intriguing ways through the perspective of a deeply unwell sapphic nerd with a terminal case of identity crisis. what more could i want.
The social attitude regarding age is consistently getting weirder. You’re not ‘pushing 30’ you’re just in your late 20s. 30 is not old and neither is 40 while I’m at it. Growing older is an enormous privilege and displaying that age is a gorgeous component of life. Spending your days trying to reverse that grace breeds an eternally wasted life.
men will do literally anything other than engaging in pro-social community-oriented behavior and then get online and complain about how masculinity is vilified and men aren't allowed to be heroes anymore
"all men really want is to feel like the hero" okay then volunteer at a food bank. get narcan training. step in when a woman is being harassed on the street. help out an elderly neighbor with shopping or home repairs. learn how to safely de-escalate fights. help your friends move. join or start your workplace union. become a big brother or volunteer coach for kids' sports. clean up your local park or get involved in some local conservation campaign. do your own damn dishes. notice what needs to be done and then do it. the world doesn't need heroes, it needs helpers. there are literally so many paths to finding a sense of self-respect and worth through pro-social behaviors that improve your immediate local community and help build your network of close personal connections. but these guys don't give a shit about actually contributing anything to the world. they just want to whine and fantasize.
