It's Maclura pomifera, commonly known as the osage orange or hedge apple. It is known to be native only to a small area of Texas and the edge of Oklahoma and Arkansas. Before the invention of barbed wire, it was pruned repeatedly and shaped to make dense impenetrable hedges to contain animals.

The fruits are inedible—not poison, they're just hard and taste bad.

The wood is super-strong, burns hotter than any other wood, and is ideal for making bows!

In much of Europe, wild poppies grow in recently disturbed soil. As a result, they tend to blossom profusely in wheat fields, creating a magnificent red bloom in the middle of summer. They also grew in abundance in the shell-broken earth of the battlefields in WWI, which is why people wear poppies on their lapels for remembrance day.

This happens because of how ecological succession works! The first plants to return to a cleared stretch of ground are called pioneer species and they are specially adapted for disturbed ground.

Species with that role in the southeastern USA include Amaranth, Purslane and Pokeweed.

Amaranth and Purslane are both edible. Pokeweed is very poisonous, but you can eat the young leaves if you boil them and put them in fresh water 3 times, as poor people in the region have learned to do. It's called Poke Salad and it's the pufferfish of Appalachia
