“You’re doing it wrong ------- it’s supposed to conjure flames, you know...”, the blonde pointed out, struggling not to smile.
troye sivan - for him.
HYMNALS // Grizfolk.
braverydwells:
he had been stuffing his face, as usual, with a wide mixture of food on his plate. yes he loaded up on food, no he didn’t care about what mixed with what. james potter saw nothing wrong with his eating habits. he was mid-bite when he heard the familiar voice next to him – asking him to join even though she had already sat down. a smile graced his lips before he swallowed the food in his mouth, no need to talk with a full mouth.
“of course you can join me, mckinnon. could always use the company.” not that he would ever truly be alone but one could wonder if you could be alone in a crowded room. marlene mckinnon is enjoyable to have around, especially since this gave james a chance to talk to her about his quidditch idea. “oh you know, just being responsible and head boy-ish. —alright, actually i’m failing at this. evans is constantly telling me i’m good at it but you try taking points away from people who are doing something you’ve done exactly the same just last year.”
talking about being head boy always made james want to complain about what he can’t get himself behind. he has trouble following through with the bad parts of being head boy, or at least the parts he considers bad. but there are good parts to it all, some of them he’s been able to do which has lead him to meet a fair few of new students from either beauxbatons or durmstrang. “though, it isn’t all bad, i suppose. but enough about me, yeah? how are you, have a good holiday?”
With her fingers, Marlene snapped a part of the sweet off and tossed it in her mouth. As she chewed, she aimed a swift head motion at him, as if to say thank you ----- when in the company of a close friend, the last thing the girl wanted was to come off as overly rude.
It wasn’t rare to see James enjoying a small bite (or two) from a generous amount of the offered food. Either way, who was Marlene to judge him? It wasn’t rare to see her do the exact same after every Quidditch match. Besides, she ---- along with the vast majority of the students, surely ---- would be lying if she said she didn’t enjoy Hogwarts’ cuisine in the slightest.
As soon as James replied, Marlene couldn’t avoid smiling. It was true: she’d missed him over the holiday break, but the thing about James Potter was that Marlene would always enjoy his company. He was one of the few people she knew with a passion just as big as her for Quidditch and dislike towards the chauvinistic purebloods’ elitists ideals.
“RESPONSIBLE? You know, I have the feeling you’re pullin’ my leg, James”. The blonde’s eyes narrowed, as a suspicious smirk took over her lips and her left eyebrow rose. However, it wasn’t long before the Head Boy dropped the act, sending a portion of laughter out of the girl’s mouth. “Merlin, sounds like torture for you”, she gently teased. “Ah, same ol’ Lily. I don’t know how it’d go for me if I were Head Girl, though. It does seem like a complicated job. What do the boys feel about it? I mean, about you being Head Boy...” Clearly, she meant the Marauders. It wasn’t like she had to use a code name to keep their identities safe & unknown, for their pranks had never gone unnoticed. In regards to this, a part of Marlene felt jealous: her goal ever since her first day here had been to make her name well-known around the castle, while they’d achieve it quickly and easily. However, the rest of her couldn’t bring her to envy them, for the four of them were, indeed, higly likeable. She sort of admired them, even though her pride wouldn’t never let her express this aloud.
“Oh, it went swimmingly. Did you hear about the Pride of Portree vs. Caerphilly Catapults Quidditch match? I was there, and oh Merlin, it was great. Other than that and spending hours preparing myself fot the N.E.W.T’s, I didn’t do anything too exciting”, she shrugged as she finished speaking, but you could still see she’d enjoyed the holidays.
princessmar-rigal:
“ So, this whole house points system… I don’t understand. Is there really any point in it? ”
“ I mean, what do you win? ”
“Overall -------- bragging rights. It’s still very much worth it, though.”
christophelyon:
Christophe was happy to enjoy his weekend without having anything to do. Back at Beauxbatons his weekends were normally filled with copious amounts of schoolwork and essays that he had put off until the last minute. However, he it was too early in the school year to have school to focus on, even though he could use the extra time to study. Yet he found himself in the library. Perhaps looking for a book or two for leisure. Christophe might not have the best marks in his year, but he only failed two classes last year. And two that he really had no interest in. Although charms was not his best class, it was one of the few he actually liked, so he found a book on unusual charms and was enjoying that for the moment.
He liked the school so far, and the few people that he had met from the school quickly became people that he would actually enjoy hanging out. Dorcas and Hestia especially. And Lily had been an interesting person. Though besides those, he had not really talked a lot of people. ( did anyone really expect otherwise? ) Christophe’s eyes scanned the pages of the book and he was getting bored already. He had no idea what to do though, besides try and comb the castle walls for something to do. A trip to the kitchens - now that he knew their location. He could use for a snack. Christophe tucked the book into his bag.
“Uh, sure?” he replied to the blonde. She was probably smarter than him. All women were, technically.
So far, Marlene had made acquaintances of only a handful of the foreign students. Much to her surprise, there was a bit of confusion going on inside her head -------- As the school year was starting, she was very much looking forward to befriend students from Durmstrang, more than Beauxbatons, in fact. The performaces from both schools during the Start-Of-Term Feast added to this fact (being such a curious being towards exciting, thrilling stuff, Marlene ended up enjoying the fire acts more than the butterflies). However, so far, she’d found the french to be a bit more... amicable. Then you would have to add up the fact that, due to Durmstrang’s policies, Muggleborn students wouldn’t be taken in, you had a surprised Marlene McKinnon. While it was rare coming from her, she’d been too quick to judge the french.
After a while of pondering it all, she’d decided to carelessly let the flow carry her, meaning, she’d try to get along with students from both schools equally. If her memory didn’t deceive her, the whole point of the Triwizard Tournament was international magical cooperation, no?
Her smile widened. “BRILLIANT. Last year, we covered the Stunning Spell, as well as Nonverbal Ones. We also reviewed the Levicorpus and Disarming charms. Overall, it’s pretty much been counter-jinxes and defensive charms. Is the programme too from Beaxbatons’?”
( It’d indeed be interesting to see how the students from the different schools performed magic, for she guessed their way of learning, ability and style wouldn’t be precisely like Hogwarts students’. She could already feel a teeny spark of excitement taking over her. )
marythemuggleborn:
Mary laughed as she heard the tune, knowing exactly who it was. She rolled her eyes, but with a certain kind of affection that most were sure only she could pull off, before turning to face her blonde friend. She indulged her slightly, humming the song. Sure that they looked like complete nutters to anybody walking passed - especially anybody who hadn’t heard the muggle song - still she smiled like the mad-woman they looked like.
“That’s almost getting as bad as the Sirius-serious pun Marley,” she teased, laughing.
Marlene wrapped an arm around her friend as she clicked her tongue. “I thought it could still do the trick. You have a point: it’s becoming bad, dumb, whatever you say.... Still, you laughed this time, that was what I was going for.” The Quidditch chaser smiled at her friend, eyebrows raised. “Also, you should be thankful I went with that song instead of Mary Contrary.” It was a notable joke, but soon the teasing tone to Marlene’s words was dropped. “Seriously Mary, where are you headed? What pranks and adventures have you been up to as of late?”. Marlene felt that because of vacations and with the Tournament about to take place, she’d lost a tad of communication with certain people.
@marythemuggleborn
The blonde steps emitted a soft echo as she trailed down Hogwarts’ hallways, yet they were eventually drowned by the noisy collective happiness. Not too far from where she was stood one peculiar brunette. It wasn’t necessary to look at the color of her scarf to see whether it was in fact Mary Macdonald ----- Marlene had Mary’s face recorded among her memories.
So the blonde approached her fellow Gryffindor friend from behind, giving her a playful pat on the back before leaning over and, to the tune of the famous 1967 song, jokingly chanting:
“Mary Mary, where are you goin’ to.... Mary Mary, can I come too?”
draganovas:
“Given the Tournament? Only three people are involved in the Tournament - that doesn’t make any sense.” Not that half of the things Hogwarts did made any sense to her, but that was neither here nor there. “Somehow I doubt that.”
Marlene couldn’t avoid sighing. “That’s the same thing I said after the professors told me.” Of course, she knew Hogwarts wasn’t the only school with Quidditch as one of their activities, reason why Marlene eagerly hoped for the matches to recommence; she’d very much enjoy holding a match against the Durmstrang or Beauxbations Quidditch players.
Part of her doubted it too. “Well, I still believe that either some kind of petition should be passed onto them or we tried something. Besides, I’m pretty sure I read that the whole point of the tournament was international magical cooperation. . .”
Strike me down? I’ll get up again. I am not invincible, but I won’t give up either.
burningmeadowes:
She immediately raised her free hand to cover Marlene’s mouth. While it was obvious (and a blessing to boot) she hadn’t witnessed the previous interaction, Dorcas didn’t want anyone else being drawn to the area from the blonde’s excitement. She was smiling, though, when she raised the fist still holding the parchment to press a single finger to her lips. Explaining why she was out of bed would be a long shot, but add another soul to the bit? It would effectively land them both in detentions Dorcas would like to avoid if at all possible. “You’re so loud,” she said, lowering her hand. Folding up the paper, she slid it in her back pocket and nodded. “Oh, yeah. Nothing beats the view from the castle.” Probably because it’s in the middle of nowhere, she thought.
“I’ll show you,” she offered, tipping her head back. At this point she’d reasoned no work would be done, and since she suddenly had company, it seemed wrong to pass it up. It wasn’t often anymore that she had anyone joining on her late nights, anyway. “Unless you’re out so late for a particular reason?” She wondered, not so delicately, because if that was the case, the reasons behind it couldn’t have been anything less than scandalous, or at least a serious craving for something delicious. Who hadn’t been there a time or two?
“If that’s the case, I can pretend I didn’t see you,” she crossed her arms over her chest, smiling suggestively. “The stars can wait for another night.”
Marlene’s eyes widened and eyebrows shot upwards as the other witch’s hand swiftly covered her mouth. The rushed motion filled Marlene with doubt for a second ----------- was the encounter not supposed to happen? Was this about something Marlene wasn’t meant to know about? Knowing Dorcas, the chance of it not being precisely allowed couldn’t be discarded.
“Another thing Hogwarts doesn’t have in common with other schools”, Marlene pointed out banteringly, a smirk attempting to take over her lips. Following came a nod. There was still a bit of curiosity nibbling at her in regards to the reason behind Dorcas’ late night wandering. While it was highly likelt she wouldn’t sleep much tonight, she didn’t not want to pass up the chance to interact with a familiar face; it would be much more enjoyable than a few hours of incomplete rest. Marlene sighed. “Honestly... I couldn’t sleep. Anyway, I should be the one asking you that.” She wasn’t the most suitable person to be talking about privacy, for it’d already been a couple times she had broken someone’s nose after they’d inquired about her grandfather’s passing. When it came to matters liek that, the Gryffindor chaser very much preferred to keep the answer to herself only.
“Don’t --- It wasn’t up to anything worth mentioning. In fact, stargazing sounds far more fun.”
@christophelyon
Weekends at Hogwarts weren’t what you’d describe as ‘eventful’. Given the Quidditch Pitch were available and the weather were favorable, some students would host an unofficial match. Certain Clubs would hold get-togethers, or, if allowed, students from Third year and above could visit Hogsmeade (however, so far, perhaps due to the Triwizard Tournament, no visits had been spoken of.) The students who preferred spending a calm evening browsing through the infinity of books in the Hogwarts Library or stay there completing assignments were completely allowed to do so.
In that moment, a restless Marlene McKinnon – whose schedule remained empty for the rest of the day – scanned the room in the hopes of finding a partner for her Defense Against the Dark Arts practice session. As there were no familiar faces around, the decision of inviting one of the other students was made inside of her head. After all, one of the Tournament’s purposes was making acquaintances of the students from the other countries.
“Hey there! Are you perchance interested in being my Defense Against the Dark Arts practice partner today?”, she asked one of the Beauxbatons boys, her lips curled into a smile as she spoke.
@braverydwells
As soon as she stepped inside of the Great Hall, the mildly noise yet still pleasant atmosphere of it embraced Marlene and contaged it with its warmth. Her thoughts were still attempting to organize themselves after having spent hours at the library, writing an paper for Transfiguration class and reading the chapter Two from "The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 7" the DATDA professor had requested them to. It was now time for a break and some food.
After quickly scanning the available spaces among the diversity of teenagers, she made her way to the Gryffindor table and went to stop next to one familiar James Potter--------- the boy with wild dark hair and a bright smile.
"Mind if I join you?", the blonde asked, even thought she had technically already done so. Marlene then proceeded to take out a Chocolate Frog out of her satchel and aim a grin at him. "So, exactly what have you been up to? I'm particularly curious to know what the Head Boy thing's been like."
burningmeadowes:
“Oh, now you’re just being snide,” Dorcas countered, dropping the paper to her side. “I come here for tips, and the most you can give me is a barbed comment on my penmanship?” She rolled her eyes and turned away from the portrait.
It was a habit she had no intentions of breaking, not an insane ploy as one might think. She understood what it looked like, her up in the middle of the night talking to pictures, but this was no ordinary painting. This was Bridget Wenlock, and Dorcas was stuck on a particularly vexing problem for her Arithmancy homework. Besides, it wasn’t cheating if she didn’t copy someone else’s. She just needed a nudge in the right direction, but ole Bridget got up in a huff about the late hour. Why did a painting care about the time, anyway? It’s not like the woman had anywhere to be the next day. “Now you’re just going to ignore me? Fine. I’ll figure it out on my own.”
She made to leave then, dramatic flouncing in tact, but only moved to find the corridor blocked by a third party eavesdropper. Dorcas neatly tucked her parchment behind her back, feigning a look of pleasant surprise. “Nice night for a stroll, mm? The stars off the tower are ridiculously bright.”
After what seemed to be an hour and a half of constant wriggling around and giving every method she knew to fall asleep a try -- and of course, all of them unsuccessful --, Marlene had gotten to the conclusion she wouldn’t get a pleasant rest that night. This time, it seemed as if the bed sheets were too suffocating for her, or the pillow too stiff and hot. The rest of the girls were undoubtedly enjoying a deep slumber -- something Marlene would usually be doing as well, for she was an utterly big fan of sleeping -- but the strange feeling that’d flooded her since the Start-Of-Term Feast hadn’t fully left her yet. Perhaps that was the reason behind her lack of sleep. Or, the girl pondered, that since the Quidditch matches had been stopped, she’d found no alternative on which to waste big part of her energy, thus at the end of the day, she was left with stamina to spare.
She’d already taken out her wand and played with a few spells, after which came a wave of boredom to the girl. Reading didn’t seem too alluring given the time. So she left her bed, with no idea other than to go wander around the halls of the castle for a bit or go see if she could run into someone going through the same as her in the Gryffindor Common Room. Indeed, it was the only appealing idea she managed to come up with.
While the halls were undeniably eerie because of how dark they were, Marlene enjoyed strolling around. Was she too entertained by the peaceful atmosphere of nocturne Hogwarts to hear the voice? Very likely. She almost hadn’t stopped herself from colliding against the other person.
“Dorcas!”, the joy was slightly evident in her voice. “I haven’t paid them much attention ----- Didn’t know you enjoyed stargazing... Either way, you’re right: it’s a nice night for a stroll.”
draganovas:
“I was lead to believe that you played Quidditch here, was that false information?”
She missed Quidditch. She’d been dying to get on her broom again, hold a Quaffle one more and feel that rush of adrenaline and bliss after making it go through one of the rings ever since the last match at Hogwarts had taken place, back during her 6th year.
“Not entirely. The Quidditch matches were put on hold for the rest of the year…. given the Tournament”, the last word brought along an eyeroll from the blonde. However, it left rapidly as her right eyebrow rose and a grin spread accross her face.“But maaaybe if the teachers hear you and Beauxbatons talk about playing Quidditch, they might consider bringing it back.”

Also taking into account the cruel handling her friends and fellow house mates have been receiving, plus the recent passing of her grandfather, she has found herself feeling a good amount of hatred within her. She will occassionally explode, taking it out on anyone who crosses her path. It is easy to upset her.
