&&. THE THREE AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH DANY

please bear with me considering I haven't read the books ( not for lack of trying okay because I have tried ) and all I really know is from the wiki pages and the show. but I wanted to explore more of their relationship with their mother considering what has happened between the three of them ( drogon, rhaegal, and viserion ) and their mother.

DROGON

while I often joke that he is a mama's boy, drogon has a complex relationship with dany. in part because they are bonded together as rider and dragon and not just mother and child. it means a lot more exploration needs to be done with their relationship. as a headstrong and willful dragon, he needs a leader to help reign him in so to speak. second guessing and hesitation from dany often leaves him confused as to what she would want him to do, but also makes him uneasy. he is more prone to taking action over diplomatics and will need a firm hand to help him realize not everything needs to be solved with fire and blood. I'm leaving his relationship rather open ended as I want to explore more with who I'm writing with.

VISERION

due to their time chained underneath the pyramids, both viserion and rhaegal are more WILD AND FERAL in comparison to that of drogon. this translates into distrust and resentment towards dany due to their imprisonment. this doesn't mean that he can't be civil towards her, but vis already has mixed feelings of his mother. not to say that he does not adore her ( he still does, deep down ), but considering that he knows who he was named after, vis isn't particularly thrilled to say the least. vis comes off as cold and distant, often one to hold rhaegal back from forgiving dany as quickly as the two of them have grown closer and bonded together. I know this sounds like everything is stacked against Dany repairing their relationship, but trust me, viserion just needs to understand where she's coming from. in comparison to his brothers, vis is the most knowledgeable when it comes to why taking back the iron throne isn't as simple as drogon wants it to be. depending on whether we go with the show or not, his death is something I wanted to explore previously. mostly because I write him as a vengeful ghost that is currently stuck in winterfell as that is his final resting place so to speak and would visit his mother in her dreams. he can't rest in piece because he's far from home ( dragonstone ) and is constantly cold. he is what I would consider UNSTABLE as he is conflicted between blaming his death upon his mother, wanting to also protect her from what has yet to come, but also fighting for control over his own consciousness.

RHAEGAL

as mentioned above, rhaegal is more wild and feral. though he is distrusting and a little resentful of dany, rhaegal is more lenient than that of viserion. perhaps it's because he is the youngest and kindest, rhaegal is the most forgiving out of the three. he is a bit of a wild child in the sense that he idolizes drogon and yet struggles to find a version of himself that isn't a copy of his brother. after being chained underneath the pyramids, he's a little more hestiant to trust dany as he looks more towards vis for guidance. but to say in the least, he does try to empathize with his mother's actions and tries to look at the greater picture of things despite how difficult it may be for him. depending on whether we go with the show or not: rhaegal is not the same considering the death of viserion and later having to fight him later on. it's led to deep scars physically and mentally. while forgiving, he does harbor some resentment and blames dany for vis dying. though to be fair, he also has a terrible time processing both of vis' death and what it means. rhaegal will be turning towards drogon and dany for more guidance and also for comfort, but ultimately he feels lost.

&&. DRAGONS AND MOURNING

one may say such cold blooded creatures are unable to feel such emotions as deep as grief. however, records say such statement is untrue. from bonded riders who have come to pass to the loss of hatchlings, dragons are capable of mourning and processing grief. if only one were to know the dragon well enough, one could see just how affected they are when such crisis emerges. - - ser propaganda

grief is often experienced in the natural world, especially considering the loss of a child. as one may not know, a dragon's clutch is usually small considering the longevity of a dragon. a size of perhaps three to five eggs are laid at a time and even then, not all eggs hatch within a clutch at the same time or if at all. hence why mother dragons losing a hatchling is extremely traumatic considering how much time is spent watching and tending to the clutch. it has been noted in several books that were salvaged from valyria that female dragons have been heard crying when clutches have been destroyed or eggs have been stolen. mother dragons also mourn the loss of their hatchlings and have been observed laying listlessly at their nesting sites for days.

dragons who are litter mates or even shared territories together are also seen to share this sort of bond that is almost on par with that of a bonded rider. the bond that links them are also strong and allows them to communicate with one another in a deeper way ( see communications note ). as one may know, there are no natural predators for dragons. a death of a dragon most likely would be due to natural causes such as old age or from another dragon. they have been seen circling the skies and calling for them. it has been observed that both dragons balerion and vhagar called for meraxes upon landing and later seen pressed against each other.

what may intrigue people the most is the loss between a bonded rider and their dragon. the longer the rider has been bonded to a dragon, the stronger it is. one might write it off as a closing of a chapter, leaving a dragon open to another rider, but it is far from something as simple as that. it is suddenly finding the extension of oneself cut off or one's other half missing. it is to suddenly find oneself in the dark and unable to find a light, the closing of senses and left blind and deaf to fend for oneself. depending on the manner of death, whether peaceful or painful, also affects the manner in which the dragon grieves. as they too, will feel the pain that their rider feels through their shared bond.

balerion took to the skies upon the hour of aegon's death. it was feared that the black dread would lay waste to king's landing in search for its rider. later its cries were heard across kings landing, leaving most deafened from its mourning. likewise, the death of visenya was marked with loud cries from that of vhagar.

&&. DRAGON PHYSIOLOGY

as one may see, not all dragons have the same appearance. some more nimble and agile, others with more fire to burn. some with scales the color of gold and others pitch black as night. regardless, these beasts are truly magnificent in their appearance. i have had the fortune of studying a deceased dragon with one of the maesters to try and discover their secrets.

throughout generations of targaryen reign, one may see the different sizes of dragons have slowly dwindled. from great size such as balerion to more recent dragon the size of a mere cat. it is said that the size of a dragon depends on the bloodline in which they hail from but also one’s environment as well. given no hindrance in space, such as that of balerion, a dragon can grow as great as he. however, with limitation in space and perhaps even in prey availability, a dragon’s size can be stunted in order to fit their current environment at hand. 

a dragon’s wings gives its ability of flight. similar to that of a bat’s, each wing is composed of finger like bones that are elongated and linked with leathery skin. a dragon’s wings are the same color as their sails, which are the same leathery skin like appendages that run down most dragon’s necks. thumb claws are usually used for when a dragon has its wings folded, used to help grasp and walk along the ground if necessary. it is noted that the older the dragon, it is more difficult for damages to the wings to heal. considering the consistent use and inability to “ground” a dragon, most wings are seen tattered over the years. yet considering these small holes in them, dragons are still able to take flight. 

dragons have notable similarities to birds, particularly in their lungs and bones. the lungs of a dragon are different from normal beasts. though they do have one main set of lungs, they are a series of air sacs. it is theorized that this series of air sacs fill at different times during breathing, which allows them to continuously bring in oxygen into their lungs whether they are inhaling or exhaling. of course this means that their ability to breathe fire can last for an extended period of time. 

their bones, upon one fellow who was mishandling a specimen, was found to be that of a hollowed structure. they are pneumatized like that of birds, but still as strong and as dense. this gives them the ability to support forces necessary in every day life such as take off and landing as well as aerial combat. similar to human children, their bones are fragile upon birth. however, will strengthen as they become fledglings and will continue to do so as they take flight. 

we have yet to discover the secret that dragons have to producing fire, but some maesters theorize that it is a gas that they produce in their bellies that is flammable. upon reaching their mouth, their jaws opening acts like the striking of a flint and ignites the gas. from observing certain dragons, it has been noted and later found that there are glands in the dragon’s jaws that produce a thick oil like substance that when lit burns. it is said to be what maybe the inspiration for wildfire.

the mouth of a dragon is certainly a dangerous place to be at. aside from dragon fire, a dragon’s teeth are equally just as formidable. it has been found that a dragon has rows upon rows of fangs, all lined up neatly at the base of its jaws. fangs are constantly replaced throughout one’s lifespan. as old teeth become dull or are broken are replaced by sharper new ones. it would explain why dragon teeth and scales are found abundantly as they seem to shed them upon damage or when growing. unlike their teeth and scales, dragon claws grow continuously. there has never been a case where a dragon’s claws have become too long as they are constantly worn over daily use, whether from walking, perching, or taking flight. 

a dragon’s neck, while long and slender, is covered in thick muscle. not only is it meant to lift its head up, but it is also meant to protect its long neck from potential damage as the windpipe does run through the throat of the dragon. as seen in most aerial combat between dragons, most damage is struck towards the wings or neck. one can also compare the neck to that of the tail as it too, contains thick muscle despite how slender it appears. these tails act as rudders to help control quick movements as well as side sweeping any unwary riders. 

keen sight and smell is another attribute to these large beasts. it is said from a bonded rider, that a dragon is able to smell blood from prey as small as a hare being offered miles away. likewise, it is also able to spot its bonded rider in a sea of people easily from skies above. though one might argue that a dragon would easily scare the majority of people away from the vicinity and thus clearing the area around said bonded rider. regardless, a dragon’s eyesight is uncontested.
