In this example Cali has used the detached halo to symbolize hollowness in this splendid example of the female martyr as she is being engulfed by the wiled seas. This works reflects the tragic overture in a christianised garb that in spirit can be traced back to the works of John Evaerette Millais, Ophelia, 1852.
