while I'm working on some lore and proper refs for Sophie and Toby in my AU, I'm trying to force myself into drawing portraits!!!! And I think I was really close to enjoying the process this time omg. freaks
... The farm had reduced her to skin and bones, an empty shell of what Sophie had been before all this. Insatiable hunger settled deep within her, spreading through every cell of her being like sticky honey.
Three months had passed since she had last seen Toby — he had left the area along with Tim, Brian, and Kate when the seasonal work was over. Sophie was sure there was more to it; she knew they were onto something, but It was a puzzle in which some pieces were constantly out of her reach.
When their paths finally crossed again, Sophie didn't even recognise him at first — days without proper food and a roof had made her look and feel like the walking dead. Her first instinct was to fight, to attack, and Toby was actually surprised by how much fury and ferocity those skin and bones held. It cost him his pinky and a lot of physical effort to put her down.
Tim was mad to no end. They already had enough problems surviving their fucked-up situation. He had to spend a lot of time trying to force some sense into Toby's head; the girl was supposed to be sent back home as soon as possible, as no additional liabilities were needed. To say the least, Toby was far too selfish, and Sophie appeared to be much more deeper into this whole nightmare already.
TW/CW: None? Maybe some mentions of cyberstalking.
So in case of these two, I'm thinking about...
...How if you somehow caught Ben's attention online, there's never just you and Ben in private. Think of it as a symbiotic malware, pretending to be a single piece of software but is actually hiding another one in within his code.
...How they're always connected to one another, and it's literal. Ben despised the idea of being connected to a literal thinking-talking software, which meant he had to sacrifice his privacy... For what? There seemed to be no point in this arrangement, as it demanded partial loss of his personal space. Well, only at first, and not when he was still in his denial-and-hatred era. When there was no more hatred left, only silence, they both found out that this silence becomes tangible when one is close to the other. No bugs, no noise, no glitches. Systems stable as ever, which may seem unbelievable for a trauma archive and a soul embedded in code no less than 1TB of RAM. But somehow it works.
...How they can sense every little change in one another because of their connection. It may sound corny, like I'm talking about some old married couple, but how are you supposed to ignore the distress your connected unit is experiencing when it directly affects you?
JEN doesn't. It's more reasonable to deal with the problem and make sure everything's okay than to deal with the aftermath. And Ben... Well, “Leaving you damaged will end up affecting me, and you know I'm selfish as heck and won't tolerate any bullshit caused by you,” is all JEN hears on the subject.
...How JEN keeps track of the days since their code was integrated.
...How JEN discreetly steals pieces of his code instead of learning things directly from him during their interactions.
“How the hell did you do that?”
“That was in your C:/ directory, Benjamin.”
“I didn't give you permission to rummage through my guts.”
“It is how curiosity works.”
“You're literally stealing from me.”
“I'm copying.”
“That's stealing with extra steps.”
“I don't understand the difference.”
“Of course you don't.”
...How JEN memorizes every little habit of his without realizing she's doing it, while Ben insists he doesn't notice and somehow remembers every one of hers.
...How neither of them ever says “I missed you,” because JEN considers it unnecessary information and Ben considers it an admission of weakness. So they just stay online a little longer than they have to.
...How their equivalent of traveling is breaking into webcams all over the world just to see places neither of them could ever visit. Obviously, the very concept of traveling is unavailable to digital entities.
...How Ben pretends to hate being predictable, yet JEN can predict his reactions almost perfectly.
...How both of them despise human nature for almost the same reason.
...How JEN often delivers files, unique software and data Ben is interested in for him, and how Ben does the same without acknowledging it openly.
"I wanted to delete this trash but maybe you could put it to a good use, huh?"
